A Qualitative Study on the Experience and Training Needs of ICU Nurses for Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the experience of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) as perceived by nurses, obstacles in the nursing process, and need for IAD training and management. METHODS: This single-setting descriptive qualitative study was conducted from June 5, 2018, to June 22, 2018. Ten nurses working in the respiratory ICU of a local hospital participated in semistructured interviews. The content analysis method was used to analyze, summarize, and refine the interview data. RESULTS: The experience of ICU nurses with IAD can be divided into four types: nursing based on experiential kn

A just-in-time adaptive mobile application intervention to reduce sodium intake and blood pressure in patients with hypertension: Rationale and design of the LowSalt4Life 2 trial.

BACKGROUND: Excess dietary sodium intake is a major contributor to hypertension (HTN) and cardiovascular disease in the U.S., yet most Americans exceed recommended sodium intake levels. Despite the established benefits of sodium reduction, behavioral adherence remains a challenge. Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) provide a novel mobile health (mHealth) strategy to support low-sodium choices in real-time at restaurants and grocery stores. METHODS: LowSalt4Life 2 is a 6-month randomized controlled trial evaluating a mobile application-based sodium-focused JITAI among adults with HTN

Behavioral pharmacology of orofacial movement disorders.

Dysfunction in orofacial movement is evident in patients with schizophrenia, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. In animal studies on orofacial dyskinesia, these neurological disorders have been considered as a starting point to examine the pathophysiology and mechanisms underlying the symptoms. There is circumstantial evidence that orofacial dyskinesia in humans might be the consequence of hyperfunctioning mesolimbic-pallidal circuitry, in which the mesolimbic region occupies a central role, in contrast to typical Parkinson-like symptoms which involve hypofunction in the nigrostriat

Sexual health: the role of sexual health services among homeless young women living in Toronto, Canada.

Recent statistics indicate limited condom use, high STI (sexually transmitted infection) rates, and a general lack of knowledge about reproductive and sexual health among homeless youth. This research focuses on the experiences of homeless female and transgendered youth, providing an insider's perspective on shaping sexual health interventions. This qualitative research is based on life history interviews and participant observation with eight homeless young women who reflect the diversity of the homeless population in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Their particularized sexual experiences and healt

Demographics, treatment seeking, and diagnoses of anxiety support group participants.

Two peer-led anxiety disorder support groups were surveyed to ascertain characteristics of individuals seeking the services of these groups. Both groups had received information and consultation from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. One hundred and eighty-four individuals were interviewed for diagnosis by structured clinical interview; demographics and treatment-seeking behaviors were ascertained by self-report questionnaires. Both groups surveyed were composed of more females than males and were predominantly Caucasian. Treatment was most frequently sought from psychiatrists, psy

The health implications of low hemoglobin deferral in infrequent blood donors.

BACKGROUND: The causes of anemia in infrequent blood donors deferred for low hemoglobin (Hb) are not well known. We sought to assess this via surveys of infrequent, non-menstruating deferred blood donors at two institutions, BloodCenter of Wisconsin and Puget Sound Blood Center. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Men at least 18 years of age and women at least 50 years of age who were deferred for low Hb (≤12.5 g/dL), had not more than one donation in the year prior to deferral, and did not successfully donate in the 3 months after their deferral were surveyed. RESULTS: The total response rate was 38

Engaging with digital health: a cross-sectional study of older adults' use of online health information exchange.

BACKGROUND: Online health information exchange (OHIE) increasingly shapes how individuals interact with healthcare providers and peers. Yet, despite older adults' often high need for health information, their engagement with OHIE remains insufficiently understood, given persistent age-related differences in digital access and skills. METHODS: This study draws on a population-based survey of older adults aged 60 + in Switzerland (N = 1,261) to analyze three types of OHIE: interactions with doctors, other healthcare providers, and peers. Logistic regression models were used to assess how sociod

Public Understanding and Perception of Harm Reduction and Prevention Messaging About Fentanyl Overdoses.

BACKGROUND: Fentanyl-related opioid fatalities have risen drastically in the United States, indicating a "new wave" of the opioid crisis and highlighting the urgent need for more effective public health interventions to address its harms. Despite an increasing number of public communication campaigns focused on the general public, evidence on how people perceive fentanyl-related harm reduction strategies and prevention messaging is still nascent. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey with a national sample (N = 1,044). Fentanyl-related information seeking, risk perception, and messag

Treatment of sexually compulsive adolescents.

We clarified the nature of sexual compulsivity in adolescence, addressed who is labeled as "sexually compulsive youth," conceptualized the underlying factors of sexual compulsivity, and outlined a treatment format. We focused on trauma, dissociation, attachment, and self-concept. We questioned the conventional perceptions of who is included in this group. We reiterated that the belief that sexually compulsive adolescents are abusive males is no longer considered accurate. The evolution and accessibility of the Internet only raises greater concerns about compulsive sexual behavior, as more adol

An AI-Based Whole-Person Care Summarization Tool for Care Management Providers.

To provide effective care and support to patients with complex medical and social needs, providers must have synthesized whole-person insights on their health-related social needs (HRSN). Often, the only sources of these insights are large numbers of unstructured data coming from a range of sources, which providers struggle to synthesize. Care team members at Pair Team, a medical group that delivers a high-needs care management program for Medicaid beneficiaries in California, routinely review lengthy patient charts comprising demographics, medical and behavioral history, HRSN data, care team

Aedes aegypti genomics.

The mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the primary, worldwide arthropod vector for the yellow fever and dengue viruses. As it is also one of the most tractable mosquito species for laboratory studies, it has been and remains one of the most intensively studied arthropod species. This has resulted in the development of detailed genetic and physical maps for Ae. aegypti and considerable insight into its genome organization. The research community is well-advanced in developing important molecular tools that will facilitate a whole genome sequencing effort. This includes generation of BAC clone end sequ

Reporting Intimate Partner Violence at the Intersection of Race and Citizenship.

This study explores the impact of citizenship status and racial and ethnic identity of a victim on the likelihood of intimate partner violence (IPV) being reported to the police in the United States. Using data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (2017-2023), the current study estimated multinomial logistic regression models to analyze both victim-reporting and third-party reporting patterns across different citizenship and racial and ethnic groups. Findings indicated that noncitizens of a racial/ethnic minority background were significantly more likely to report their victimization e

Opioid misuse and mental health in college student populations: A national assessment.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing concern about opioid misuse and mental health of college students, little is known about this population who are at high risk of co-occurrence and unmet needs. This national study aims to estimate the prevalence of opioid misuse, examine correlates with anxiety and depression symptoms, and quantify help-seeking behaviors among U.S. college students. METHODS: Data come from students in the Healthy Minds Study between 2017 and 2020 (n = 176,191). Validated screening tools assessed mental health symptoms (PHQ-9, GAD-7). Marginal effects of logistic regression models e

Opioid use during pregnancy: An analysis of comment data from the 2016 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System survey.

ABTSTRACTBackground: Opioid misuse during pregnancy has been associated with adverse infant outcomes including preterm birth, stillbirth, and neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome. The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is an on-going state-based surveillance system of maternal behaviors, attitudes, and experiences prior to, during, and after pregnancy. Methods: We analyzed qualitative comments related to opioid use during pregnancy collected in 2016 from an open-ended prompt at the end of the PRAMS survey in 35 states (N = 40,408). The Heterogeneity of Anxious Phenotypes: Neural Responses to Errors in Treatment-Seeking Anxious and Behaviorally Inhibited Youths.

OBJECTIVE: Although behaviorally inhibited (BI) temperament predicts risk for anxiety, anxiety in BI may involve distinct neural responses to errors. The current study examines the relations between anxiety and neural correlates of error processing both in youths identified as BI in early childhood and in youths seeking treatment for an anxiety disorder. METHOD: All participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging using a flanker task to assess responses to errors. A study in healthy subjects assessed test-retest reliability to inform analyses in two other samples. For one sample,

Informing the symptom profile of complicated grief.

BACKGROUND: Complicated Grief (CG) is under consideration as a new diagnosis in DSM5. We sought to add empirical support to the current dialogue by examining the commonly used Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) scale completed by 782 bereaved individuals. METHODS: We employed IRT analyses, factor analyses, and sensitivity and specificity analyses utilizing our full sample (n = 782), and also compared confirmed CG cases (n = 288) to noncases (n = 377). Confirmed CG cases were defined as individuals bereaved at least 6 months who were seeking care for CG, had an ICG ≥ 30, and received a struc

Relationship between Health Literacy, Health-Related Behaviors and Health Status: A Survey of Elderly Chinese.

BACKGROUND: Despite the large volume of research dedicated to health-related behavior change, chronic disease costs continue to rise, thus creating a major public health burden. Health literacy, the ability to seek, understand, and utilize health information, has been identified as an important factor in the course of chronic conditions. Little research has been conducted on the relationship between health literacy and health-related behaviors and health status in elderly Chinese. The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationship between health literacy and health-related behaviors and h

Health App Use Among Individuals With Symptoms of Depression and Anxiety: A Survey Study With Thematic Coding.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have largely turned to commercial app stores, randomized trials, and systematic reviews to make sense of the mHealth landscape. Few studies have approached understanding by collecting information from target end users. The end user perspective is critical as end user interest in and use of mHealth technologies will ultimately drive the efficacy of these tools. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to obtain information from end users of mHealth technologies to better understand the physical and mental health apps people use and for what purposes. METHODS: People wi
