Preterm graduates from the neonatal intensive care unit and future adult cardiac problems: A narrative review.

Preterm birth, defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in adulthood, including hypertension, coronary artery disease, and heart failure. Advances in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) practices have improved survival rates for preterm infants, particularly very low birth weight infants (<1500 g), but these survivors face unique long-term health challenges. This narrative review synthesizes recent evidence on the mechanisms linking preterm birth to adult cardiac problems, including altered cardiovascular development

Rapid dissemination of Staphylococcus aureus in the neonatal intensive care unit is associated with invasive infection.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of severe infections in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). We present results of precision surveillance of S. aureus carriage and invasive infection in a cohort study of high-risk infants in the NICU with the goal of identifying novel strategies for prevention and control. Using whole genome sequence guided epidemiology over a 3-year timeframe, we identify spatial and temporal links for transmission between babies, suggesting shared spaces, caregivers, and physical proximity as major risks for transmission in the NICU. Moreover, environmental survei

Exploring the Experience of Human Milk Use in Nigeria Neonatal Intensive Care Units: A Scoping Review.

Human milk is the recommended feeding standard for preterm and low-birth-weight infants. The 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) guidance prioritizes mother's milk, donor human milk (DHM) when mother's milk is insufficient, early feeding initiation, and potential fortification for the smallest infants. However, evidence on current practices and alignment with these recommendations in Nigeria is limited. This scoping review examined human milk utilization practices, perceptions, and experiences in Nigerian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) populations. A systematic search was conducted in

Ensemble learning for predicting birth trauma using high-dimensional data in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Birth trauma remains a significant global health challenge and contributes substantially to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Although machine learning (ML) approaches have shown promise in predicting birth trauma, persistent limitations related to class imbalance, model interpretability, and incomplete characterization of risk hinder their clinical utility. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an ensemble ML framework capable of leveraging high-dimensional clinical data to capture both established and latent risk factors while maintaining transparency for clinical interpretation. We imple

Impact of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Environment on Maternal Breast Milk Utilization: : A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Prematurity remains a significant cause of infant and childhood morbidity and mortality. Infants who are exclusively breastfed during the first 6 months of life have improved outcomes. A majority of premature infants are discharged home on formula. Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) design may influence parental involvement and, in turn, affect breast milk utilization. This study assesses breast milk utilization at discharge, before, and after transitioning from a traditional open-bay NICU to a private, single-family room (SFR) NICU. METHODS: This is a retrospective observation

Development of a Serious Game to Simulate Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Experiences: Collaborative Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Opportunities for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) training are limited for medical and nursing students due to patient safety concerns and the complexities of neonatal care. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted clinical training opportunities, further underscoring the need for alternative educational tools that can provide immersive and practical learning experiences. Serious games have garnered attention as potential tools for medical education; however, few are designed to simulate the complete NICU environment and its unique challenges. OBJECTIVE: To a

Evaluating the effectiveness of a vancomycin stewardship programme in a level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Despite recommendations to limit the use of vancomycin for known resistant infections, it remains one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). One of the most effective approaches to reducing unnecessary antibiotic exposure is through the implementation of antibiotic stewardship programmes (ASPs). AIM: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of ASPs in reducing the use of vancomycin in neonates hospitalized in our NICU. METHODS: This study was a quasi-experimental single-centre study for a quality improvement (QI)

The use of near-infrared spectroscopy to measure kidney oxygenation in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a relatively recent technology, first applied in clinical contexts in the early 1970s. Critically ill neonates in the intensive care unit face unique post-natal adaptations that can be challenging when compounded by clinical co-morbidities. Given the size and limited blood volume of these patients, there is a need for non-invasive monitoring methods that go beyond traditional vital signs and laboratory assessments. NIRS offers a potential approach for monitoring regional tissue oxygenation and perfusion of the kidney with a potential for early detection of
