Patient-Centered Communication and Intention to Recommend a Safety Net Primary Care Clinic in the United States.

Patient-centered communication (PCC) is critical to improved patient experience and outcomes. We used binary logistic regression to examine how PCC at safety-net providers was associated with patient intent to recommend the facility. We used 2021-2022 national data collected by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Our predictors were Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) items to measure patient assessment of provider communication. We found that patients whose providers always listened carefully and knew important information about patients' medic

Understanding the intention-behavior gap: The role of entrepreneurship education and creative self-efficacy among university students.

Entrepreneurship education is widely promoted as a way to encourage entrepreneurial action; however, the psychological links between education and behavior remain poorly understood, especially in low-income and fragile institutional settings. Using social cognitive theory, this study examines how entrepreneurship education and creative self-efficacy influence entrepreneurial behavior, particularly entrepreneurial intention, among university students in Afghanistan. The analysis, based on data from 213 undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in business and management programs at three…

Letter to editor: Peer attitudes after adolescent acquired brain injury: moving from intention to real-world inclusion.

Adolescent acquired brain injury (ABI) often results in long-term social challenges, with peer acceptance playing a crucial role in psychosocial outcomes. Hills and Dunsmuir's study highlights how attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control influence adolescents' intentions to engage with peers with ABI, explaining 83% of the variance. Notably, perceived behavioral control was the strongest predictor, indicating that even positive attitudes may not translate into inclusion if engagement is perceived as difficult. Externalizing behaviors further reduce the likelihood of peer a…

The cognitive anchor system: a structural model of self, task selection, and latent intention in human cognition.

INTRODUCTION: Human cognition requires both stability and flexibility: individuals maintain a continuous sense of self while shifting among tasks, intentions, and contexts. Existing theories explain information processing, prediction, attention, and control, but they leave under-specified the structural layer that determines what cognition is currently organized around. METHODS: This theoretical paper develops the Cognitive Anchor System, a structural framework that distinguishes among the self anchor, the task anchor, and the anchor pool. The model is compared with major theories of attentio…

Intention-to-Treat Analysis of Hepatic Resection for Liver Metastases from Uveal Melanoma: A Single-Center Experience.

BACKGROUND: Uveal melanoma metastasizes to the liver in almost 50% of patients. The prognosis of liver metastases from uveal melanoma (LMUM) is dismal; however, results from retrospective monocentric series suggest that surgery may improve survival in selected patients. We report our results of surgical explorations and hepatic resections for LMUM. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed our prospectively collected institutional database of hepatic resections for LMUM between 2013 and 2023. RESULTS: In total, 22 patients underwent surgical exploration (median age 61 years, 41% female patients):

Efficiency Recalibrates Social-Emotional Trade-Offs Behind Partner Choice in Direct Reciprocity through Intention-Specific Neural Bases.

Direct reciprocity, in which beneficiaries return favors to benefactors, is a cornerstone of human cooperation. Previous empirical work addresses partner control-how individuals decide whether and how much to reciprocate-whereas the equally critical dimension of partner choice, deciding whom to reciprocate when aided by multiple benefactors, remains understudied. This gap is addressed by testing two determinants: social-emotional motivations and reciprocal efficiency (the efficiency of reinforcing future relational capital). Combining an interpersonal task with fMRI multivariate neural express

Targeting anger for COVID-19 prevention: The motivating role of anger on media use and vaccination intention.

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in public anger due to its disruptive and harmful nature. However, anger remains an understudied concept despite its potential to persuade the public and spark action. The current study investigates the role of anger in driving COVID-19 vaccination intentions. In Study 1, through a rolling-cross sectional survey of U.S. adults during the early stages of the COVID-19 epidemic (N = 6,141), it was found that anger towards COVID-19 was associated with increased use of social and traditional media news, which was then related to improved vaccination intentions. In Stu…

Influence of Race and Ethnicity on Meeting Intention to Exclusively Breast Milk Feed at Postpartum Hospital Discharge.

Background: Racial/Ethnic disparities in breastfeeding practices exist despite strong evidence for significant health benefits of breastfeeding for the mother-newborn dyad. Breastfeeding intentions are known to predict breastfeeding practices at hospital discharge and breastfeeding retention in the long term. Interventions during postpartum hospitalization can help mothers achieve breastfeeding intentions and reduce racial/ethnic gaps in breastfeeding on discharge. This study aims to identify racial/ethnic disparities in meeting intentions to exclusively breast milk feed (EBMF) on hospital dis…

A Multi-Goal, Multi-Action, Cognitive-Affective Model for Understanding Gatekeepers' Intention to Report Deviant Close-Others.

Reporting a close-other to authorities can save lives from extreme deviant behaviors but it also poses a dilemma as gatekeepers struggle between their relationship and societal obligations. We propose and test a multi-goal, multi-action, cognitive-affective model to elucidate this decision-making process. Across various contexts (hate crimes, problem gambling, and violent extremism), gatekeepers' motivational strength to report and not report their close-other and their anticipated regret toward both actions simultaneously contributed to the variance of reporting intentions (30-70%). Notably, …

Improved Transfer Learning for Detecting Upper-Limb Movement Intention Using Mechanical Sensors in an Exoskeletal Rehabilitation System.

The objective of this study was to propose a novel strategy for detecting upper-limb motion intentions from mechanical sensor signals using deep and heterogeneous transfer learning techniques. Three sensor types, surface electromyography (sEMG), force-sensitive resistors (FSRs), and inertial measurement units (IMUs), were combined to capture biometric signals during arm-up, hold, and arm-down movements. To distinguish motion intentions, deep learning models were constructed using the CIFAR-ResNet18 and CIFAR-MobileNetV2 architectures. The input features of the source models were sEMG, FSR, and…

A multi-feature fusion graph attention network for decoding motor imagery intention in spinal cord injury patients.

Objective.Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals exhibit temporal-frequency-spatial multi-domain feature, and due to the nonplanar nature of the brain surface, the electrode distributions follow non-Euclidean topology. To fully resolve the EEG signals, this study proposes a temporal-frequency-spatial multi-domain feature fusion graph attention network (GAT) for motor imagery (MI) intention recognition in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients.Approach.The proposed model uses phase-locked value (PLV) to extract spatial phase connectivity information between EEG channels and continuous wavelet transform …
