OBJECTIVES: To determine if treatment with recombinant human interferon gamma (rHuIFN-gamma) increases the adhesion to, and lysis of, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cells by lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) and peripheral blood mononuclear (PBM) effector cells in vitro and to evaluate the role of cell surface adhesion molecules in these processes.

OBJECTIVE: Adhesion molecules, including intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and E-selectin, are important inflammatory mediators which are elevated in the serum of patients following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The authors previously found that 6-mercaptopurine (6-mp) was effective in preventing and reversing arterial narrowing in a rodent SAH model. BACKGROUND: Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are cell surface proteins involved in the binding of cells to each other, to endothelial cells, or to the extracellular matrix. The soluble forms of CAMs (sCAMs) are thought to be produced by proteolytic cleavage from the cell surface and are shed into the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF).
