BACKGROUND: Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) disease (CAEBV) is defined as a severe, progressive lymphoproliferative disorder associated with active EBV infection persisting longer than 6 months and developing in patients without recognised immunodeficiency. Rarely, interstitial pneumonitis (IP) occurs as a serious complication in CAEBV patients. The standard therapeutic regimen for IP in CAEBV has not yet been defined. Although interferon alpha (IFN-alpha) is known to suppress viral DNA replication by affecting its basal promoter activation process, it is rarely used in CAEBV patients.

To evaluate follow-up after α-interferon (IFN) discontinuation, 23 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in stable complete molecular response (CMolR) with IFN were revisited. After a median IFN treatment of 105.8 months (IR 56.1 - 127.3), all patients discontinued IFN for prolonged CMolR (12), intolerance (8) or planned ABMT (3). Hepatitis E virus (HEV) can induce chronic hepatitis in immunosuppressed patients. There is no established treatment for HEV infection. Treatment of hepatitis C in renal transplant recipients remains a controversial issue, as interferon therapy has been associated with a high risk of rejection and poor efficacy. To clarify long-term effects of intrathecal administration of interferon (IFN)-alpha in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), we followed up a patient with SSPE for 18 years, who had been treated successfully using intrathecal IFN-alpha with response-based dose adjustments.
