Longitudinal associations between hostility in adolescents' family relationships and friendships and hostility in their romantic relationships.

This study examined longitudinal predictors of hostility in adolescents' romantic relationships. The sample included 110 adolescents and their parents from 72 families. Observational measures of parents' marital hostility and parent-child hostility and self-reports of hostility in close friendships were collected when adolescents ranged from 14 to 16 years old. Three years later, when they were 17 to 19 years old, adolescents reported on the hostility in their romantic relationships. Results indicated that hostility in parents' marital relationships and in adolescents' friendships accounted fo

Gender-Specific Pathways from Dark Triad Traits to Suicidal Ideation: A Prospective Test of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide.

This prospective longitudinal study examined associations between Dark Triad traits and suicidal ideation through interpersonal pathways among Chinese university students (N = 2,018 across three waves), guided by the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS). Analyses revealed distinct patterns: Machiavellianism showed positive associations with suicidal ideation through thwarted belongingness, while psychopathy was positively linked to suicidal ideation via both thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness. Narcissism demonstrated negative associations with suicidal ideation through reduce

Linking childhood emotional abuse and depressive symptoms: The role of emotion dysregulation and interpersonal problems.

Childhood abuse is a major public health problem that has been linked to depression in adulthood. Although different types of childhood abuse often co-occur, few studies have examined their unique impact on negative mental health outcomes. Most studies have focused solely on the consequences of childhood physical or sexual abuse; however, it has been suggested that childhood emotional abuse is more strongly related to depression. It remains unclear which underlying psychological processes mediate the effect of childhood emotional abuse on depressive symptoms. In a cross-sectional study in 276

Avoidant personality disorder and social phobia: Does mindreading make the difference?

OBJECTIVE: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is closely related to and partially overlaps with social phobia (SP). There is an ongoing debate as to whether AvPD and SP can be classified as separate and distinct disorders or whether these diagnoses rather reflect different degrees of severity of social anxiety. The hypothesis of this study is that in patients with AvPD and in those with AvPD and comorbid SP both interpersonal functioning and metacognitive abilities (the ability to understand mental states) are more severely impaired than they are in patients with SP only. We also hypothesise

Interpersonal sensitivity, bullying victimization and paranoid ideation among help-seeking adolescents and young adults.

AIM: The effects of a negative interpersonal experience, such as bullying victimization in childhood and adolescence, can be strong and long lasting. Bullying victimization is associated with paranoid ideation and suspiciousness. Few studies have focused on personality traits of victims of bullying. The aim of this study is to investigate whether a particular personality trait called interpersonal sensitivity may be related to suspiciousness in those who experienced bullying victimization. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 147 help-seeking adolescents (mean age 17 years) selected after a

Borderline personality disorder, exposure to interpersonal trauma, and psychiatric comorbidity in urban primary care patients.

OBJECTIVE: Few data are available on interpersonal trauma as a risk factor for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and its psychiatric comorbidity in ethnic minority primary care populations. This study aimed to examine the relation between trauma exposure and BPD in low-income, predominantly Hispanic primary care patients. METHOD: Logistic regression was used to analyze data from structured clinical interviews and self-report measures (n = 474). BPD was assessed with the McLean screening scale. Trauma exposure was assessed with the Life Events Checklist (LEC); posttraumatic stress disorder

Personal relationships during and after an initial psychotic episode. First-person experiences.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis is often associated with loneliness, the absence of a confidant and a perceived lack of social support. In addition, the social isolation and solitude experienced can aggravate internalised stigma, depressive symptoms and/or suicidal tendencies, and worsen the course of the disorder. AIM: This study explores the experiences and perceptions of persons with psychosis concerning how their interpersonal relationships have evolved from the earliest symptoms of the disorder to its subsequent clinical stabilisation. METHOD: A qualitative content analysis was performed of the f…

A preliminary study of social issues in AIDS prevention among adolescents.

Educational efforts to prevent the spread of AIDS require a combination of accurate information and the application of that information to personal behavior. In this preliminary study, a scale was developed to evaluate the social and interpersonal skills of adolescents in AIDS-related and non-AIDS-related interactions. The instrument was administered to 101 Australian students in grades 10 and 11 of an urban high school. Findings indicate ratings of AIDS-related activities of the adolescents were not significantly different from their other social activities, suggesting levels of comfort and a

Effects of Psychotherapies for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder on Anger: An Exploratory Study.

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric treatment research has too frequently neglected anger. "Anger management" is widely used to tamp anger down. Yet understanding and expressing anger often have clinical and interpersonal value. Few data address anger in the context of treating patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The authors hypothesized the clinical utility of anger expression rather than suppression, particularly using interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), which focuses on interpersonal handling of emotions. IPT effects on anger have barely been researched. METHODS: Secondary data analyses

Prinzmetal's angina and emotions: A neglected psychosomatic entity.

Prinzmetal's angina, a form of angina precipitated by vasoconstriction or spasm, appears to be a somatic phenomenon, but there is evidence, from research and case reports, of a major psychological component. In this study, individuals with Prinzmetal's angina were interviewed to determine the nature of their interpersonal relationships and their intrapsychic state at the time of onset of their chest pain. In addition, short developmental histories were obtained. The authors found that onset of chest pain was related to experiencing intense affect, and multiple levels of interpersonal and intra…

The presence of adjacent others facilitates interpersonal neural synchronization in the left prefrontal cortex during a simple addition task.

The hyperscanning technique, that is, simultaneous measurement of neural signals in more than one person, is a powerful research tool for understanding humans' social interactions. In recent years, many studies have investigated interpersonal neural synchronization during various types of communication processes. However, there has been little focus on the impact of the presence of others without explicit social interaction, despite the mere presence of others having been suggested as influencing behavior. In this study, we clarify whether neural signals during a self-paced, repeated, addition

Self-awareness, affect regulation, and relatedness: differential sequels of childhood versus adult victimization experiences.

This study examined abuse and trauma exposure as it predicted identity problems, affect dysregulation, and relational disturbance in 620 individuals from the general population. Multivariate analyses indicated that maternal (but not paternal) emotional abuse was uniquely associated with elevations on all 7 scales of the Inventory of Altered Self-Capacities (IASC): Interpersonal Conflicts, Idealization-Disillusionment, Abandonment Concerns, Identity Impairment, Susceptibility to Influence, Affect Dysregulation, and Tension Reduction Activities. Disorders of extreme stress (DESNOS) symptoms are associated with type and severity of interpersonal trauma exposure in a sample of healthy young women.

Childhood abuse and other developmentally adverse interpersonal traumas may put young adults at risk not only for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also for impairment in affective, cognitive, biological, and relational self-regulation ("disorders of extreme stress not otherwise specified"; DESNOS). Structured clinical interviews with 345 sophomore college women, most of whom (84%) had experienced at least one traumatic event, indicated that the DESNOS syndrome was rare (1% prevalence), but DESNOS symptoms were reported by a majority of respondents. Controlling for PTSD and other anxiet
