Iron deficiency anemia is the most prevalent nutritional disorder in the world. Information on the metabolism of hepcidin and its possible significance as a biochemical parameter in iron deficiency anemia is reported in this review, which was based on a survey of the databases PubMed and LILACS for articles published between 2006 and 2010 on hepcidin as a biomarker for the regulation of iron metabolism. The literature search returned 35 studies published in international journals and one study on the subject in a Brazilian journal. Hepcidin production is homeostatically regulated by anemia and

Anemia induced by digestive diseases refers to anemia due to iron deficiency. Conventional gastrointestinal diagnostic workup fails to establish the cause of iron deficiency in about one third of patients. Abnormal iron absorption is increasingly recognized as an important cause of unexplained iron deficiency. The importance of coeliac disease as a possible cause of iron deficiency anemia refractory to oral iron treatment, without other manifestations of malabsorption syndrome, is increasingly being recognized. In addition, Helicobacter pylori (HP) has been implicated in several recent studies

BACKGROUND: Balantidium coli, a ciliated protozoan parasite that infects primates and pigs, and is the largest protozoan to infect humans, is a well-known cause of diarrhoea and dysentery in humans. Extra-intestinal disease is uncommon, however.
OBJECTIVE: We describe a case of lung involvement, with severe pulmonary haemorrhage resulting in iron deficiency anaemia and respiratory failure, of a 20-year-old, immune-competent man.
RESULTS: Diagnosis was made by bronchial biopsy and lavage, which showed numerous trophozoites compatible with B. coli with a background of acute inflammatory cells.

PURPOSE: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) during pregnancy and infancy is still common in developed countries, especially in low-income groups. We examined the prevalence of anemia and IDA in healthy low-income pregnant women participating in the Early Childhood Initiatives (ECI) program, and in their infants when they reached six months of age.
METHODS: Pregnant women were recruited by nutritionists. In mothers, hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume, and serum ferritin (SF) were measured at 36 +/- 2 weeks of gestation. In infants, Hb, mean corpuscular volume, SF, serum iron, total iron bindin

The case of a 20 month-old girl that was admitted to the emergency ward because of worsening of her general condition in the setting of acute non-bloody gastroenteritis is reported. The clinical examination revealed signs of severe dehydration and a prominent tender abdomen. Laboratory evaluation showed leucocytosis, elevated C-reactive protein and severe hypochromic microcytic anemia. Abdominal X-ray revealed diffuse meteorism. The child underwent laparascopic evaluation. A perforated Meckel's diverticulum was found. Perforation and anemia due to occult bleeding are unusual presentations of M

Five cross-sectional surveys were conducted in African refugee camps to assess the level of iron deficiency anemia and vitamin A deficiency in populations dependent on long-term international food aid and humanitarian assistance. The prevalence of anemia in children [hemoglobin (Hb) <110 g/L] was high, with >60% affected in 3 of 5 camps. Iron deficiency [serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) >8.5 mg/L] was also high, ranging from 23 to 75%; there was also a strong ecological correlation between the prevalence of iron deficiency and anemia among different camps. Within camps, sTfR predicted the con

Using data from the current National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2000), the authors assessed whether Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) in the United States. Iron deficiency was defined as at least two abnormal results out of three biomarkers of iron stores. IDA was defined as a low hemoglobin level in the presence of iron deficiency. H. pylori infection was measured by serology. Complex survey estimators were used in the analysis. For 7,462 survey participants aged >or=3 years, H. pylori infection was associated

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is defined as a clinical abnormality characterized by reduction in haemoglobin concentration below the normal for age, sex, physiological condition and altitude from the sea level of a person. It can be of different types, the commonest being iron deficiency anaemia which affects mostly pregnant and lactating females and growing children in the developing world. The present study was conducted at Ayub Teaching Hospital on this problem of global importance.
METHODS: One hundred consecutive anaemic patients were selected from Ayub Teaching Hospital. After detailed history an

Anemia secondary to iron deficiency is the most frequent anaemia in our environment, the first cause of consultation in Haematology and the most common nutritional problem. It is characterized by a diminution or absence of iron deposits. The ultimate test that confirms the diagnosis of anaemia secondary to iron deficiency is a low serum level of ferritin, which indicates iron depletion. Other parameters do not allow to distinguish iron deficiency anaemia from other chronic derangements. Diet is of utmost importance in anaemia. There is not a single food product with sufficient concentration of

OBJECTIVE: To thoroughly investigate the association between the consumption of cow's milk and anemia in childhood.
SOURCES OF DATA: The information was gathered from papers catalogued in Lilacs and MEDLINE and published during the last two decades, and also from textbooks and publications by international organizations.
SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: Iron deficiency anemia is a severe public health problem in developing countries. Breast milk contains adequate iron for full term babies in the first 6 months. Thereafter, an additional iron-rich diet becomes essential. In recognition of the importa

The in vitro production of interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from 20 patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was examined before and after iron supplementation and compared to values obtained for PBMC from healthy controls. A significant decrease in IL-2 production was observed in IDA patients, whereas the secretion of the other cytokines did not differ from that of controls. Addition of iron to the culture medium did not affect the secretion of IL-2 and IL-1beta, but caused an increase in IL-6,

Substantial efforts have been made in the past several decades to implement programs to reduce iron deficiency. Yet, compared with other micronutrients such as vitamin A and iodine, overall progress in reducing iron deficiency has been limited. Such limited progress is not attributed to a lack of scientific knowledge about the prevalence, causes or consequences of iron deficiency, but to limited implementation of effective interventions and ineffective communication tools. The challenge is to coordinate and balance research efforts more constructively with the implementation of practical and e

Reticulocyte analysis was studied in 28 anemic patients, 15 with iron deficiency anemia (IDA), and 13 with hemolytic anemia including 9 glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD def.), and 4 with G6PD def. combined with HbE trait or alpha thalassemia trait (alpha thal trait). The reticulocyte analysis among these patients showed the increased number of reticulocyte percentage with low degree of maturation in both IDA and G6PD def. patients. The significantly decreased reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) was found in IDA (CHr = 21.74 +/- 4.61 pg in IDA vs 28.41 +/- 1.34 pg in normal;

BACKGROUND: Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a common complication after amputation, affecting up to 80% of the amputee population. However, only 5% to 10% of amputees have severe PLP impacting daily function. The present report details the management of severe, treatment-resistant PLP in a 72-year-old man with a traumatic left transradial amputation and a comorbid complication of heterotopic ossification (HO).
OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of PLP with HO and the possible role of calcitonin in the treatment of both conditions.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature regarding the management

Trained athletes frequently experience low levels of blood haemoglobin (13 to 14 g/100ml in men and 12 g/100ml in women) plus low haematocrit and low ferritin levels. These parameters define the concept of 'sports anaemia'. Low iron levels may be due to mechanical haemolysis, intestinal bleeding, haematuria, sweating, low iron intake or poor intestinal absorption. The resulting decrease in blood gas transport and muscle enzyme activity impairs performance. The concept of sports anaemia can be criticised. Simply measuring the blood levels does not take into account the haemodilution that occurs

Two groups were chosen from a randomly selected group of one hundred 6-12 years old primary school children. One group was formed by iron deficient (ID), not anemic children, and a control group (C) by iron replete children. Both groups, matched by age, sex, and sociocultural level, were studied using WISC-R, a computerized test of learning (DEL) and a qEEG. The WISC-R test showed that ID children had significantly lower values in WISC items of information, comprehension and verbal, performance and full scale IQ than C children. On the other hand, the EEG power spectrum showed more theta energ

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is associated with an increased incidence of malignancy. Our aim was to audit the management of patients with IDA seen in a teaching hospital gastroenterology unit, and to assess the role of upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy as well as mesenteric angiography in improving the diagnostic yield.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective review of all outpatient letters and in-patient discharge summaries in an 11 month period in 1996 was used to identify anemic patients. All endoscopic and radiological procedures were documented on these patients.
