Biliary stents are commonly used in the management of obstructive jaundice. Complications at the time of insertion are not uncommon, but late complications due to dislodged stents have not been previously reported.

OBJECTIVES: the aim of this study was to assess the severity and type of nutritional deficiencies observed in patients with benign and malignant obstructive jaundice (OJ).
METHOD: in this prospective cross-sectional study 51 patients with OJ (21 with benign and with 30 malignant obstruction) were investigated. Nutritional status was assessed by anthropometric parameters (ideal body weight, midarm muscle area and skinfold thickness), visceral proteins, creatinine height index and total lymphocyte count. Observed values in patients with OJ were normalized to the percentage value of the lower li

Adenoma of the major duodenal papilla can cause bile flow blockade and obstructive jaundice. We present successful endoscopic radiofrequency ablation for adenoma of the major duodenal papilla with intraductal growth in the common bile duct.

Lemmel's syndrome is an uncommon entity that causes obstructive jaundice due to a periampullary duodenal diverticulum in the absence of choledolithiasis or neoplasia. To date, there are few published cases and the etiopathogenesis remains unclear.

Neonatal jaundice is a common illness that affects around 80% of preterm and 50-60% of full-term newborn infants. It is one of the most common causes of neonatal death. Neonatal jaundice may be physiological or pathological. Physiologic jaundice is far more common than pathologic jaundice and accounts for most hyperbilirubinemia. Physiologic jaundice in neonates is due to greater hemoglobin breakdown compared to bilirubin clearance. While pathological jaundice occurs due to various infections, drug toxicity, inborn enzyme deficiencies, Rhesus fetal-maternal incompatibility, hypothyroidism, and

The susceptibility to sepsis in obstructive jaundice may be related to bacterial translocation (BT) from the gastrointestinal tract. We evaluated BT to visceral organs and morphological changes of the intestinal mucosa in a rat model of obstructive jaundice. Animals were randomly divided into two groups: in group A the common bile duct was tied and divided, while group B had the bile duct mobilized but not tied. After seven days, peritoneal swabs and liver, spleen, pancreas, lung, mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN), cecum, and terminal ileum biopsies were obtained for cultures. Light and electron mi

Sepsis is a serious complication for patients with obstructive jaundice. Although administration of adrenomedullin (AM) in combination with its binding protein (AMBP-1) is protective after injury, it remains unknown whether AM/AMBP-1 ameliorates sepsis-induced organ injury and mortality in the setting of biliary obstruction. The aim of this study is, therefore, to test the efficacy of human AM/AMBP-1 in a rat model of obstructive jaundice and polymicrobial sepsis. To study this, obstructive jaundice was induced in male adult rats (275-325g) by common bile duct ligation (BDL). One week after BD

Hepatitis A is a common cause of acute infectious hepatitis in children, transmitted through the faeco-oral route. Although mostly self-limiting, cholestasis is a rare but known complication of acute hepatitis A in children. This report presents an adolescent girl who developed cholestatic features following hepatitis A infection and successful treatment with oral steroid therapy. Prolonged cholestasis jaundice (PCJ) is a known manifestation of hepatitis A infection, characterised by prolonged fever, pruritus and jaundice. While the exact mechanisms causing PCJ are not fully understood, immuno

The preeminence of sonography in the diagnosis of obstructive jaundice has already been established. Earlier reports have described a variety of radiologic modalities used to establish the diagnosis of choledochal cyst. Our case illustrates the usefulness of sonography in differential consideration, though either transhepatic or operative cholangiography is necessary to further define the point and nature of the obstructive process and to determine that the cyst communicates with the common bile duct.

Mirizzi syndrome (MS) describes a rare complication of cholelithiasis resulting from extrinsic compression of the common hepatic duct by impacted gallstones in the cystic duct or Hartmann's pouch. MS is most commonly seen in adults and is more prevalent in the female population. Due to the pathophysiology of MS being similar to other causes of cholecystitis and biliary obstruction, the symptomatology is rather nonspecific. While ultrasound and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography are commonly used for diagnosis, treatment of this condition typically involves cholecystectomy. Identifying

Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a chronic fibro-inflammatory disease of the pancreas that belongs to the spectrum of immunoglobulin G-subclass 4-related diseases (IgG4-RD). It is sometimes associated with a visible pancreatic mass mimicking pancreatic cancer on imaging. The most common presentations include abdominal pain and obstructive jaundice in elderly men. Similar to other IgG4-RD, it can cause cholangiopathy, nephritis, orbital pseudotumor, and extensive lymphadenopathy. Here, we present the case of a 53-year-old female with abdominal pain and obstructive jaundice, which was diagnosed

Fasciolopsis is one of the rarest parasitic infestations in our locality. The usual definitive host is the sheep; humans are accidental hosts in the life cycle of a liver fluke - Fasciola. In the chronic phage of Fasciolopsis, the patient presents with cholestasis and cholangitis. Yet, there is no proof of association of this parasite with carcinoma of the gallbladder. We here present such a case of Fasciolopsis in association with Stage IV gallbladder malignancy. Fasciola worms were extracted on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography done as a palliative measure for associated obstruc

Oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) have a known prothrombotic effect. Obliterative portal venopathy (OPV) can be seen in patients with underlying hypercoagulability. We present a case of a 19-year-old female patient taking OCPs who presented with obstructive jaundice. Her main concern was pruritis. An extensive workup was done to reach a diagnosis but it came back negative. A liver biopsy showed OPV. This was thought secondary to her OCP use. Her OCPs were discontinued which resulted in a complete resolution of her symptoms and laboratory abnormalities. Cases with a direct relationship between OP

Hydatid disease is an ongoing issue in endemic areas. Hydatid cysts can be seen in any organ but, liver is one of the most common involved organs. Cystobiliary communication as an overwhelming complication of hepatic hydatid cysts can contribute to the obstructive jaundice, cholangitis, sepsis and even biliary cirrhosis if left untreated. The patient we are trying to present is a 61-year-old farmer who presented with obstructive jaundice, multiple common bile duct stones and biliary cirrhosis attributed to a long-lasting untreated hepatic hydatid cyst. Portal hypertension is introduced to be a

Amongst the cause of cystic hepatic disease, hydatid cyst is common in the Asia, South America, and Africa. The definitive therapy for hepatic hydatid disease is surgical resection. Rupture of the hydatid cyst into the biliary tree can lead to serious cholangitis. In this report, a 22-year-old man is presented with the signs and symptoms of obstructive jaundice and cholangitis. Ultrasonography reported dilated common bile duct (CBD) with sludge and stones, a hydatid cyst adjacent to the gall bladder and mild thickening of gallbladder wall without a stone. MRCP revealed dilated CBD with a cyst
