Lactobacillus complex capsules ameliorate aspirin-related small intestinal mucosal injury: a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: Aspirin can reduce cardiovascular disease risk; however, it can increase the risk of gastrointestinal injury. Lactobacilli have some protective effects; however, there are few studies on their effects on humans. This study investigates the effects of Lactobacillus complex capsule treatment on the aspirin-related small intestinal mucosal injury. METHODS: This single-center, prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial included 69 patients using enteric-coated aspirin for >1 month between May and December 2019. After baseline magnetically controlled capsule endoscopy (MCCE), pa…

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG Promotes Intestinal Vitamin D Absorption by Upregulating Vitamin D Transporters in Senile Osteoporosis.

Intestinal absorption of vitamin D is an important way to improve the vitamin D level in senile osteoporosis (SOP). There is a link between oral probiotics and vitamin D, but the mechanism is still unclear. We aimed to evaluate whether Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG culture supernatant (LCS) can affect cholecalciferol absorption, transport, and hydroxylation in SOP, and explore underlying mechanisms. In the study, specific-pathogen-free SAMP6 mice were randomly divided into an experimental group administered undiluted LCS and a control group administered normal drinking water. Furthermore, levels …

Oral administration of Lactobacillus delbrueckii enhances intestinal immunity through inducing dendritic cell activation in suckling piglets.

Lactobacillus delbrueckii (LAB) has been demonstrated to exert versatile beneficial effects on modulating intestinal immunity, increasing gut microbial diversity, promoting growth performance, and even preventing disease onset in pigs. However, the underlying mechanism of LAB-mediated gut immunity regulation in piglets remains unclear. In this study, we found that supplementation of LAB significantly increases serum TNF-α, ileum IL-4, and IL-10 levels compared with the control group. Meanwhile, oral supplementation of LAB-modified gut microbial communities was evidenced by the increased abunda…

Lactobacillus gasseri RW2014 Ameliorates Hyperlipidemia by Modulating Bile Acid Metabolism and Gut Microbiota Composition in Rats.

Hyperlipidemia is a leading risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Dietary supplementation with probiotics has been suggested as an alternative intervention to lower cholesterol. In the current study, we isolated a strain of Lactobacillus gasseri RW2014 (LGA) from the feces of a healthy infant fed with breast milk, and it displayed bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity. Using this strain we determined its cholesterol-lowering and fatty liver-improving functions. SD rats were randomly divided into four groups. The control rats were fed a commercial chow diet and the other three groups…

Lactobacillus plantarum alleviates irradiation-induced intestinal injury by activation of FXR-FGF15 signaling in intestinal epithelia.

Abdominal irradiation (IR) may destroy the intestinal mucosal barrier, leading to severe intestinal infection and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes. The role of intestinal microbiota in the development of IR-induced intestinal injury remains largely unknown. Herein, we reported that abdominal IR altered the composition of the microbiota and reduced the abundance and diversity of the gut microbiome. Alterations of bacteria, in particular reduction of Lactobacillus, played a critical role in IR-induced intestinal injury. Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) from normal mice or administration of …

Lactobacillus fermentum PS150 promotes non-rapid eye movement sleep in the first night effect of mice.

The first night effect (FNE) is a type of sleep disturbance caused by an unfamiliar environment, which leads to difficulty falling asleep and reduced sleep duration. Previously, we reported that Lactobacillus fermentum PS150 (PS150) improves sleep conditions in a pentobarbital-induced sleep mouse model. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of PS150 on the FNE in mice. Briefly, mice were implanted with electrodes and orally administered PS150 for four weeks, and then the FNE was induced by cage changing. Analysis of polysomnographic signals revealed that intervention with PS150 restor…

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG defense against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium infection through modulation of M1 macrophage polarization.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), a model probiotic strain, plays an important role in immune regulatory activity to prevent and treat intestinal inflammation or diarrhea. However, the effect of the immune modulation of LGG on macrophages to prevent Salmonella infection has not been thoroughly studied. In this study, C57BL/6 mice were pre-administered LGG for 7 days continuously, and then infected with Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). The results of the in vivo study indicated that LGG could reduce body weight loss, death rate and intestinal inflammator…

Exploring potential of vaginal Lactobacillus isolates from South African women for enhancing treatment for bacterial vaginosis.

Antibiotics continue to be the standard-of-care for bacterial vaginosis (BV), although recurrence rates are high. Vaginal probiotics may improve durability of BV treatment, although few probiotics for vaginal health contain Lactobacillus spp. that commonly colonize the lower female genital tract. Characteristics of vaginal Lactobacillus strains from South African women were evaluated for their probiotic potential in vitro compared to strains from commercial vaginal products, including growth at varying pHs, ability to lower pH, produce D-/L-lactate and H2O2, influence growth of BV-associated G…

Synergistic Effect of Eugenol and Probiotic Lactobacillus Plantarum Zs2058 Against Salmonella Infection in C57bl/6 Mice.

Previously, we showed the preventive effects of Lactobacillus plantarum ZS2058 (ZS2058) on Salmonella infection in murine models. In this work, we found that eugenol has a selective antibacterial effect, which inhibited Salmonella more than probiotics ZS2058 in vitro. It suggested a synergistic effect of them beyond their individual anti-Salmonella activity. We verified the conjecture in murine models. The results showed that the combination of ZS2058 and eugenol (CLPZE) significantly increased (p = 0.026) the survival rate of Salmonella-infected mice from 60% to 80% and the effect of CLPZE on…
