Objective: This review describes the current scenario of a priority group of emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) listed by World Health Organization (WHO), and their main determinants and drivers for the emergence/spread of the diseases. Lassa fever in pregnancy causes high rates of maternal and fetal death, but limited data are available to guide clinicians. We retrospectively studied 30 pregnant Lassa fever patients treated with early ribavirin therapy and a conservative obstetric approach at a teaching hospital in southern Nigeria during January 2009–March 2018. Eleven (36.7%) of 30 women died, and 20/31 (64.5%) pregnancies ended in fetal or perinatal loss. We caught, 2002-2003 in caves of Novosibirsk Region and Altai Territory, 52 bats (Myotis daubentoni, Myotis brandtii, Murina leucogaster, Plecotus auritus). Examinations of the animals' brain samples by fluorescence antibody microscopy and RT-PCR revealed lyssaviruses, genotype 1, which were close to strains provoking rabies in the local animals. According to the results, bats can be involved in keeping alive the rabies foci in Western Siberia, which must be taken into account in antiepizootic measures.

This review addresses the diagnostics of viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs). In the first part, an overview is given on classical methods of VHF diagnostics as well as novel molecular diagnostic tools. Currently available polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for diagnosis of VHF are summarized and discussed. In the second part, VHF diagnostics are described in particular for Lassa fever, yellow fever, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, based on cases that were imported into or occurred within Europe. The third part is focussed on important differential diagnoses of VHF.

Ribavirin is a molecule with antiviral activity against different viruses. In clinical practice, it has made its niche almost exclusively for the treatment of the hepatitisC virus.
