Between January 1993 and November 1995 laparoscopic surgery was used in 21 patients with a variety of splenic diseases, namely idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, congenital spherocytosis, lymphoma, leukemic infiltrative disease, splenic infarction, trauma, or splenic cyst. Total splenectomy was carried out laparoscopically in 16 patients. Conversion to open splenectomy was necessary in two other patients because of intractable bleeding. Two patients with a splenic cyst underwent laparoscopic unroofing of the cyst. Conservative hemostasis of a spleen injury grade II was carried out in a child

In a 59-year-old patient presenting in October 1981 with pancytopenia, hairy cell leukemia was diagnosed. Splenectomy, followed by treatments with oncovin, lithium, and prednisone were essentially without effect. Up to July 1984 the patient had been regularly transfused with a total of 62 unit. In June 1984 he acquired a transfusion associated hepatitis C which followed a chronic course and resulted in biopsy proven cirrhosis in 1989. The patient became independent of transfusions in July 1984. Repeated blood counts have shown a complete hematologic remission which has now lasted nearly 6 year

Six patients with pure meningeal relapse of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) (5 patients) or leukemic lymphosarcoma (LS) (non Hodgkin's lymphoma) (NHL) (1 patient) were treated with intrathecal (I.T.) human fibroblastic interferon (IF beta), one vial (1.3 million units) every other day or every day up to remission or failure. Tolerance was excellent in all six patients with no local or general side effects. 5 patients had no improvement of their meningeal blast infiltrations after 5 to 8 injections and were given IT chemotherapy. The sixth patient achieved a complete remission (CR) after 11

T-cell prolymphocytic leukaemia (T-PLL) is a rare, aggressive neoplasm of mature T lymphocytes. The small cell variant occurs in approximately 20% of T-PLL patients. The skin findings of leukaemia consist of leukaemia-specific skin lesions, which are infiltrated by leukaemia cells, and non-specific lesions. The former type of lesion signifies leukaemia cutis. Leukaemia cutis presents clinically as tumours, nodules, or patches on the scalp, face and trunk. We report here an 82-year-old Korean male patient who presented with erythema, erosion, vesicles, and scales on his entire body with no clea

Interaction of intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAMs) with their receptors has a key role in normal leucocyte adhesion and migration, whereas in leukaemia this has not been well established. In this study, we have evaluated the roles of different adhesion molecules in normal and leukaemia cell extravasation in a novel organotypic model for vessel wall and measured plasma ICAM-1 and -2 levels in acute leukaemia patients at diagnosis and during chemotherapy. We found that both normal mononuclear cells and blast cells from acute leukaemia patients, as well as retinoic acid-treated promyelocytic

The associations between retinal findings and haematological parameters in acute leukaemia are controversial. Sixty-three newly-diagnosed acute leukaemia patients, aged 12-77 years, were studied prospectively for the presence of intra-retinal haemorrhages (IRH), white-centred haemorrhages (WCH), cotton wool spots (CWS) and macular haemorrhages (MH), Thirty-three patients (52.4%) showed at least one retinal abnormality. The prevalence of individual findings was: IRH (30 cases), WCH (20 cases), CWS (5 cases), MH (11 cases). In contrast to previous studies, there was no association between any of

BACKGROUND: Lymphoblastic lymphoma (LBL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Cutaneous LBL is seen in less than 20% of patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Herein, we report the case of a 66-year-old male patient without any previous disease history of note and who was presenting a gradually spreading tumoral lesion of the scalp, several purplish macules and nodules on the trunk, and a single spinal adenopathy. A thoracic-abdominal-pelvic CT scan performed for acute renal failure, revealed extensive infiltration of retroperitoneal tissue. Skin biopsies and staging tests indicated LBL-T

INTRODUCTION: Leukaemia is a neoplastic dsorder characterized by an excessive proliferation of immature white blood cells and their precursors. Patients with this potentially fatal condition may often first present with gingival enlargement. Early diagnosis of the underlying condition and prompt referral for appropriate therapy, may be life-saving.
CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old female was referred to the Department of Oral Medicine and Periodontology complaining of a generalised gingival enlargement that was aesthetically displeasing to her. She insisted on immediate surgical removal of the enla

BACKGROUND: The primary function of regulatory T cells (Treg cells) is to regulate the function and proliferation of immunologically responsive T cells; the transcription factor Foxp3 is expressed by this cell populace and is held to be the standard marker for Treg cells.
DESIGN: A variety of cutaneous T-cell lymphocytic infiltrates were evaluated for Foxp3 expression.
RESULTS: Of the 95 cases, 33 (35%) were reactive, 40 (42%) were prelymphomatous cutaneous T-cell dyscrasia and 22 were (23%) T-cell lymphoma. The reactive category included dermatomyositis, lupus erythematosus, hypersensitivit

Groups of six BALB/c mice each were intravenously inoculated with lethal doses of Ba-P210 (B210) or 12B1 cells and examined by autopsy, histology, special staining methods, enzyme histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Clinical symptoms related to neoplasia consisted of a poor nutritional state, anaemia, mild to moderate dehydration and apathy. Paresis was apparent in three mice inoculated with 12B1 cells. Necropsy revealed splenomegaly in all animals. Sporadic haemorrhages in the lungs and enlargement of some lymph nodes were seen in some of the animals. Histological examination showed neop

A 34-year-old woman of HTLV-I carrier with T-PLL, whose quality of life improved and survival was prolonged after splenectomy, is described. The patient had marked splenomegaly, generalized lymphadenopathy and marked proliferation of abnormal lymphocytes in the peripheral blood with an irregular nucleus, deeply basophilic cytoplasm and a single prominent nucleolus, which were positive for CD2, CD3, CD5, CD7, CD4 and CD8. Although the patient had serum antibody against HTLV-I, HTLV-I proviral DNA integration was not detected. She was diagnosed as an HTLV-I carrier with T-PLL and received combin

We measured soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with hematological malignancies especially, adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) with or without meningeal infiltration. CSF levels of sIL-2R were significantly higher in patients with ATL and NHL with meningeal infiltration than in patients with both diseases without meningeal infiltration. The sIL-2R levels in CSF were elevated in 4/4 ATL patients (100%) and 3/13 NHL patients (23%) with meningeal infiltration. CSF levels of sIL-2R from ATL patients with meningeal in

A 25-year-old woman with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, while in remission, developed paraparesis, with faecal and urinary incontinence. CT demonstrated increased density of the lumbar theca and enlargement of the nerve roots. Myelography showed complete obstruction below the L3 level. MRI showed increased signal intensity in the lumbar sac on T1 weighting, and the cauda equina enhanced with gadolinium-DTPA. Lymphoblasts were seen in the lumbar spinal fluid. After chemotherapy, these abnormalities resolved, as did the paraparesis and incontinence.

We evaluated morphologic and immunophenotypic features of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) using morphology and flow cytometry (FCM), compared tumor cell proportions in bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB), and assessed whether these parameters could improve prognostication beyond existing indices for aggressive ATLL. We retrospectively analyzed PB and BM morphology, FCM, and clinical records of individuals newly diagnosed with ATLL at our institution from 2010 to 2024. Morphologic reevaluation was performed in 47 of 58 enrolled individuals, all with leukemic manifestations. ATLL ce

HTLV-1-infection is associated with a variety of human diseases including adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and non-neoplastic inflammatory diseases. The latter includes HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) and HTLV-1 uveitis (HU) and other diseases with unestablished associations such as arthropathy, pneumopathy, dermatitis, exocrinopathy and myositis. ATL is defined as neoplastic clonal growth of HTLV-1-infected T-cells and is characterized by unique clinical features including hypercalcemia and severe organ infiltration of leukemic cells. HAM/TSP and HU are characte

PURPOSE: Despite advances in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) therapy, relapses remain challenging. While AML is radiation-sensitive, total body irradiation (TBI) causes organ toxicities and activates tolerogenic/proangiogenic STAT3 signaling. CSI-2, a myeloid cell-targeted STAT3 inhibitor, promotes anti-leukemic immune responses but has limited efficacy against high disease burden. We investigated whether image-guided targeted marrow irradiation (TMI), which focuses radiation on leukemia sites while sparing critical organs, could synergize with CSI-2 to improve leukemia clearance and establish du

The article presents a case of 57-year-old woman with the infiltration of rare small lymphocytic B cell lymphoma in the thyroid gland. Initially, the patient was followed-up due to chronic lymphocytic B-cell leukemia diagnosed on the basis of histopathological examination of cervical lymph node. Eight months later, general symptoms occurred along with lymphocytosis and exacerbation of lesions in lymph nodes, and therefore, chemotherapy was started according to COP regimen. After four chemotherapy cycles, further progression of the disease was observed during chemotherapy. Computed tomography (

Background/Objective: During the last two decades, several cases presenting with circulating clonal B-cells with features consistent with possible marginal zone (MZ) derivation have been described under different terminologies. The present study aims to shed more light onto the main disease characteristics and determine prognostic factors for outcome in 98 consecutive cases with clonal B-cell lymphocytosis of marginal zone origin (CBL-MZ). Methods: This is a multicenter retrospective analysis including 98 consecutive CD5(-) CBL cases referred to our Departments between 1999 and 2017. These cas

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a clonal disorder characterized by immature blasts and arrested differentiation that primarily affects the bone marrow (BM) and occasionally presents as extramedullary (EM) disease. EM manifestations highlight AML's adaptability to distinct microenvironments, which we examined using spatial analyses of medullary and EM tissues. We describe a workflow for Visium-based spatial transcriptomics in medullary and EM AML, revealing insights into cell-cell communication and the spatial organization of AML hierarchies. In BM, monocytes and granulocyte-monocyte progenitor

An isolated CNS relapse is rarely seen in acute myeloid leukemia. However, it has a potentially fatal clinical outcome. We herein present the case of a 39-year-old man, who presented to our emergency room with horizontal diplopic images, vertigo, bilateral deafness, and progressing somnolence. Cerebral imaging revealed cerebral and cerebellar edema and a diffuse leukoencephalopathy. With the one-year-old history of an initially successfully treated FAB-M0 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in mind, a lumbar puncture was carried out that showed a vast number of myeloid blasts in the morphologic analy
