OBJECTIVE: Relationships between stressors and suicide might be expected to vary with stages of the life cycle. The purpose of this study was to examine this possibility.

Early childhood antecedents of elementary school aggression and passive-withdrawal were evaluated in a large longitudinal study (N = 191). With teacher ratings as outcome measures, a variety of predictor variables were selected from a comprehensive data base. The purpose of this research was to describe a group of chemically dependent females who were involved with the criminal justice system and note if they reported histories of physical/sexual abuse. Data for this study were obtained from Andersen's 1986 research project funded by the Michigan Department of Corrections and Wayne State University. Life changes preceding the onset of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) were studied in 49 children with prolonged arthritis, and in 58 children with temporary arthritis. Children with recurrent abdominal pain without demonstrable organic etiology are studied with their mothers during pediatric hospitalization. Major childhood depressive illness is found which is not masked by the somatic complaint. The mother-child relationship is shown to reflect mutual themes of depression and loss within families where experience with illness and death contributes to a hypochondriacal response to psychic pain.
