Experiences of Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment Across Cancer Types: Qualitative Systematic Review.

BackgroundCancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is frequently reported during cancer treatment, with 35% of patients experiencing cognitive issues even after treatment completion. Commonly reported impairments include difficulties with memory, attention, executive function, and processing speed, which often reduce daily functioning and quality of life (QoL). Despite its prevalence, CRCI remains underresearched across various cancer types, limiting understanding of the patient experience.ObjectiveThis study aims to synthesize the qualitative evidence regarding the lived experience of CRCI

Navigating parenthood in the face of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: A qualitative exploration of partner experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Among people diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), there are parents with children living at home. Children in families experiencing severe illness are exposed to stress and health risks. Since 2010, healthcare personnel in Norway must assess whether patients have children under 18 years of age and make sure the children's needs for support are met. A child's ability to cope with family life affected by a serious illness depends on how the parent without the disease manages the situation. Little is known about how the partner of someone affected by ALS manages being

The role of minerals in prebiotic evolution: Implications for identifying worlds with the potential for life's origin.

Understanding the origin of life requires explaining how abiotic molecules transitioned into the first living systems within plausible geological settings. Increasing evidence suggests minerals as active participants in prebiotic evolution. By adsorbing and concentrating reactants, catalyzing key reactions, stabilizing intermediates, and providing protective microenvironments, minerals may have helped to overcome thermodynamic and kinetic barriers, thereby enabling a cascade of prebiotic reactions to proceed toward the earliest life. In this review, we synthesize current experimental and theor

Treatment of indolent systemic mastocytosis with sarilumab is not supported in a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Indolent systemic mastocytosis is a clonal mast cell disease that results in an increase in mast cells in the skin, bone marrow, and other organ systems. IL-6 has been shown to promote mast cell maturation, proliferation, and reactivity in vitro. Serum levels of IL-6 correlate with severity of disease and risk of progression of systemic disease. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a double-blind placebo-controlled study to assess safety and efficacy for the use of sarilumab in improving the quality of life for those with indolent systemic mastocytosis. Progesterone hypersensitivity: a cyclical history.

Hypersensitivity reaction to progesterone is rare, with less than 200 cases reported. It occurs mainly in women in their third decade of life and can have a heterogeneous presentation (cutaneous and/or systemic), with temporal relation to serum levels of progesterone. Diagnosis is based on history and physical examination, supported by skin tests. We describe the case of a woman in her late 20s with pruritic erythema on the chest that manifested in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, with spontaneous resolution in less than 5 days, without secondary scarring. The histological diagnosis wa

A case of congenital central hypoventilation syndrome with PHOX2B gene mutation in a Korean neonate.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a life-threatening disorder with apnea and cyanosis during sleep requiring immediate endotracheal intubation during the first day of life. The PHOX2B gene has been identified as the major gene involved in CCHS. This is the first report of a Korean neonate with CCHS confirmed to have a PHOX2B mutation with expanded alleles containing 20 polyalanine repeats that is a relatively small number compared to previous cases. The patient required intermittent ventilator support during sleep only and did not suffer from any other disorders of the auto

Modern technology to support carers of care recipients with dementia or functional mental illness: promising progress, but a long road ahead.

There is no doubt that family carers who look after a family member with dementia or with a functional mental illness fulfill an important role, not only for their loved one, but also for the health and aged care systems of the countries they live in. Due to increasing life expectancy, but also improved healthcare the number of family carers supporting older care recipients with functional mental illness or dementia is on the rise. While the carer role often can offer rewarding experiences caregivers are at increased risk of stress, depression, sleep problems, and often experience poor health

A Person-Centered Approach to Supplemental Oxygen Therapy in the Outpatient Setting: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Approximately 1.5 million adults in the US use supplemental oxygen annually in the outpatient setting. However, many do not receive delivery systems that adequately meet their needs, and few receive education about devices or how to maintain independence. This Review summarizes guidelines and evidence on outpatient supplemental oxygen across several cardiopulmonary conditions, highlights evidence gaps where benefits are unclear, and discusses outcomes that inform a person-centered framework for supplemental oxygen therapy. OBSERVATIONS: Most studies of supplemental oxygen have bee

Psychological distress among family caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) present growing global health challenges, especially in aging populations, such as Uganda. In Uganda, familial caregiving, predominantly undertaken by female relatives, is the primary form of support provided to patients with ADRD. Cultural stigma around dementia and limited access to support services amplify caregivers' challenges. This study examined psychological distress, depression, and quality of life (QoL) among family caregivers of patients with ADRD in Wakiso District, Uganda. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 90

A national profile of kinlessness at the end of life among older adults: Findings from the Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The majority of end-of-life (EOL) caregiving is provided by unpaid family members. An increasing number of older adults are kinless (without close family/partnerships) and may have insufficient caregiver support to remain at home at the EOL. We therefore determined what proportion of older adults are kinless at the EOL and assessed the association of kinlessness with EOL care. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of Health and Retirement Study decedents, 2002-2015. SETTING: US population-based sample. PARTICIPANTS: Decedents age 51+ who died within 1 year of interview (n =
