Antibiotic resistance patterns of aerobic coryneforms and furazolidone-resistant Gram-positive cocci from the skin surface of the human axilla and fourth toe cleft.

Samples of skin surface bacteria from 28 healthy subjects plated directly on to selective and non-selective media revealed that the proportion of aerobic coryneforms and furazolidone-resistant Gram-positive cocci (FURECs) resistant to erythromycin was significantly greater in the fourth toe cleft than in the axilla (P < 0.05). There were more erythromycin-resistant bacteria than tetracycline-resistant bacteria at both sites (P = 0.001 for the toe cleft; P < 0.01 for the axilla). In total, 160 distinct isolates were obtained, of which 42 were FURECs and 118 were aerobic coryneforms. Of these, 1

Development of a Rapid Spore-Based Paper-Strip Assay for Detection of Antibiotic Residues in Milk.

In this study, a spore-based paper-strip assay was developed for rapid, on-site screening of antibiotics in milk. An α-d-glucosidase was identified as the optimal marker enzyme, producing a visible color signal within 30 min. Standardized production of Geobacillus stearothermophilus 331 spores served as a stable biological sensing element. Optimization of germinants, nutrient supplements, sporulation conditions, and strip-loading parameters enabled efficient spore germination and enzyme release, reducing assay time to 60-90 min. Thermal activation of spores at 100°C for 20 min improved sensiti

Chloramphenicol-mobilized Bacillus subtilis transiently expresses resistance to multiple antibiotics, including the glycopeptides phleomycin and bleomycin.

UNLABELLED: Antibiotic resistance presents an urgent global crisis, exacerbated by antibiotic overuse. Understanding the regulation of resistance genes within bacterial populations can inform strategies to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance, and reveal how antibiotics shape microbial communities. We identified upregulation of five antibiotic resistance loci in Bacillus subtilis colonies on solid growth media, following exposure to subinhibitory chloramphenicol concentrations. Notably, four resistance loci, bmrCD, vmlR, tlrB, and ytbDE, are regulated by transcription attenuation. Full

Diversity, Virulence, and Antimicrobial Resistance in Isolates From the Newly Emerging Klebsiella pneumoniae ST101 Lineage.

The global dissemination of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) has been largely attributed to a few high-risk sequence types (STs) (ST258, ST11, ST512) associated with human disease. ST101 is an emerging clone that has been identified in different parts of the world with the potential to become a global, persistent public health threat. Recent research suggests the ST101 lineage is associated with an 11% increase in mortality rate in comparison to non-ST101 infections. In this study, we generated a high-quality, near-finished genome assembly of a multidrug-resi

Comparative genomics of Clostridium bolteae and Clostridium clostridioforme reveals species-specific genomic properties and numerous putative antibiotic resistance determinants.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium bolteae and Clostridium clostridioforme, previously included in the complex C. clostridioforme in the group Clostridium XIVa, remain difficult to distinguish by phenotypic methods. These bacteria, prevailing in the human intestinal microbiota, are opportunistic pathogens with various drug susceptibility patterns. In order to better characterize the two species and to obtain information on their antibiotic resistance genes, we analyzed the genomes of six strains of C. bolteae and six strains of C. clostridioforme, isolated from human infection. RESULTS: The genome lengt

Genetic characterization of gut-associated Clostridium perfringens isolates from Austrian animals using a combination of established and novel methods.

INTRODUCTION: Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is a pathobiont of the intestinal microbiota that can cause severe systemic and enteric diseases. C. perfringens colonizes a variety of hosts and environmental niches, which is the theorized reason for its large genome, low guanine-cytosine content, and small stable core genome. Over 20 putative virulence factors have been described, but only six are included in the used typing scheme. Epidemiological analysis is limited, and to the authors' knowledge, this is the first study for Austria. Furthermore, C. perfringens frequently harbors diff

First report of PLSA resistance gene sal(B) in multidrug-resistant foodborne Mammaliicoccus lentus: Molecular characterization and food safety implications.

The emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance through the food chain pose a significant threat to food safety and public health. Our nationwide surveillance of retail foods in China revealed alarmingly high resistance rates among foodborne Staphylococcus isolates, particularly to antibiotics targeting the 50S ribosomal subunit. Among these, Mammaliicoccus lentus (formerly Staphylococcus lentus) is a coagulase-negative species commonly found in food-producing animals and retail foods, increasingly recognized as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes. To elucidate the geneti

Antibiotic Exposure and Early Reproductive Outcomes of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in a Chinese Couple-Based Preconception Cohort.

Dietary antibiotic exposure is very common, and animal studies have suggested that environmental antibiotic exposure has harmful effects on human reproduction and embryo development. However, there are no population-based cohort studies on the effects of parental antibiotic exposure on early IVF outcomes. A total of 33 antibiotics and 1 metabolite with detection rates over 10% in both female and male partners were included. Couples' early IVF reproductive outcomes included the blastocyst numbers, best-quality embryo numbers, embryo numbers, best-quality embryo rates, two pronuclei (2PN) rates,
