Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a human malignancy associated with human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1). The pathological features of the lymph nodes of ATLL change from those of lymphadenitis to Hodgkin's-like features and those of lymphoma. Chemokines and their receptors are closely associated with T-cell subgroups and immune responses. To clarify the relationship between chemokines and their receptor expression, as well as the development of ATLL, 17 cases with ATLL were analyzed using DNA chips of chemokines and their receptors. All cases showed a varied and mixed pattern o…

OBJECTIVE: To study the accuracy of fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of Kikuchi lymphadenitis (KL).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of all cases of FNA biopsy of lymph nodes in which KL was diagnosed or suggested. False positive cases were studied. Cases of KL diagnosed by histopathology were examined for the false negative rate of FNA diagnosis.
RESULTS: Forty-four cases of KL diagnosed or suggested by FNA were found. Five of eight cases were confirmed on lymph node excision. The false positive rate was 37.5%. One case was nonspecific reactive changes. Two cases were proven to be t…

Generally, typical symptoms are significant for malignant parotid tumours: The infiltration of surrounding structures and facial paralysis. A case is reported where a benign parotid tumour (lymphadenitis) caused facial paralysis. Parotidectomy and the removal of the lymph node near the stylomastoid foramen led to complete restitution. A review of the literature of the past 40 years mentions 16 cases of benign neoplasms of the parotid gland that caused facial paralysis, such as pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumour, oncocytoma, benign parotid cysts, chronic parotitis, lymphadenitis and parotid …

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, self-limiting disorder in young adults, characterized by fever and ce … without systemic symptoms. Despite six months of anti-tubercular treatment for presumed tuberculous lymphadenitis, there was no improvement. The diagnostic workup included tests for autoimmune markers (ANA, ENA panel) and viral markers (CMV, EBV), all of which were negative, as well as imaging studies, including chest x-ray and echocardiography, were normal. Ul …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Although the BCG vaccine is usually a safe vaccine, a number of complications can occur, such as adverse local reactions, regional lymphadenitis, osteomyelitis and disseminated infection in immunocompromised children, with lymphadenitis being the most common complication. Our objective to describe the associated clinical characteristics and outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational study conducted over two year's period.
RESULTS: 100 patients were enrolled with (62%) males and (38%) females. 93 cases (93%) have nodes involvement with a t…

Kikuchi disease (KD) is a benign self-limiting rare disease with unknown etiology. Prolonged fever with tender neck lymphadenitis is the most common presentation. Blood tests are not specific, and the final diagnosis is by biopsy. We describe two patients, ages seven and twelve years, who presented with fever and neck lymphadenitis. Both cases received antibiotics for more than two weeks without improvement. Blood work showed high inflammatory markers. The manifestation of the second case overlapped with Hashimoto's disease. The later diagnosis was confirmed by lymph node (LN) biopsy.

Adult T-cell leukaemia/lymphoma (ATLL), is a malignant condition associated with human T-cell leukaemia virus type I (HTLV-I). Usually, although not uniformly, histopathological examination of the lymph nodes shows a pleomorphic type. In addition, some patients with pre-overt ATLL show a Hodgkin's disease-like morphology and lymph nodes in non-neoplastic carriers show features of lymphadenitis. To characterize further the clinicopathological features of HTLV-I-associated lymphadenopathy, the histopathological features of the lymph nodes of 289 patients were classified into five types: lymphade…

A woman in her mid 40s presented for breast imaging after 1 week of painful and enlarged right axillary lymphadenopathy. She denied history of fever, weight loss, night sweats fatigue, cat scratch or other trauma. She received the second dose of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine 3 months previously on the contralateral arm. A mammogram demonstrated a single, asymmetric, large and dense right axillary lymph node. Ultrasound confirmed a 2.5 cm lymph node with cortical thickening of 0.6 cm. Ultrasound-guided core biopsy showed necrotising lymphadenitis with associated aggregates of histiocytes and plasmacy…

INTRODUCTION: Lymphadenopathy is a common clinical finding at the outpatient setting that may be caused by a vast array of disease processes.
METHODS: A retrospective study to analyze the histopathological diagnosis of lymph node biopsies with respect to age, sex, and site was conducted. All the lymph nodes sent for histopathological examination from August 2003 to 2007 were included.
RESULTS: Of all patients with enlarged lymph nodes, 49% were males (mean age: 34.52 years) and 51% were females (mean age: 38.1 years). The most common diagnosis was tubercular lymphadenitis (42%), followed by …

Papular acrodermatitis of childhood is an infectious disease characterized by a non-relapsing, non-itching, monomorphic erythemato-papular dermatitis limited to the face and limbs. It is always associated with anacute hepatitis, with hepatitis B antigen in the serum and with a reactive reticulohistiocytic lymphadenitis. In childhood other types of papular or papulovesicular acro-located eruptions, itching or non-itching, associated with reactive lymphadenitis, are observed, in the course of known diseases and with unknown cause. These acro-located cutaneous eruptions of unknown origin, which s…

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) was described in 1972. Painful, palpable lymphadenitis is localized to one or two sites in the head and neck territories in young adults (third decade) and is associated with fever. Other clinical manifestations are infrequent: arthromyalgias, cutaneous rash, sweating, splenomegaly. Leukopenia is present in 50% of the cases with sometimes "atypical" lymphocytes. A spontaneously favorable outcome is noted after a mean 3 months. Histopathology of the lymph node is the key for the diagnosis of KFD showing lymph node necrosis …

Lymphadenopathy is a rare mode of presentation of cysticercus infestation. Hence, in endemic areas, cysticercosis must be included in the differential diagnosis of superficial palpable swellings in the neck region. We report two cases of cervical lymphadenopathy which were clinically suspected to be of tuberculous etiology. However, fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) revealed features of parasitic lymphadenitis consistent with cysticercosis. Our cases highlight the importance of FNAC as an initial and rapid diagnostic modality for detecting parasitic lesions manifesting as lymphadenitis. D…
