Time course of gamma-band oscillation associated with face processing in the inferior occipital gyrus and fusiform gyrus: A combined fMRI and MEG study.

Debate continues over whether the inferior occipital gyrus (IOG) or the fusiform gyrus (FG) represents the first stage of face processing and what role these brain regions play. We investigated this issue by combining functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) in normal adults. Participants passively observed upright and inverted faces and houses. First, we identified the IOG and FG as face-specific regions using fMRI. We applied beamforming source reconstruction and time-frequency analysis to MEG source signals to reveal the time course of gamma-band activat…

Cortical plasticity in patients with median nerve lesions studied with MEG.

We have previously shown age- and time-dependent effects on brain activity in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI), in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study of patients with median nerve injury. Whereas fMRI measures the hemodynamic changes in response to increased neural activity, magnetoencephalography (MEG) offers a more concise way of examining the evoked response, with superior temporal resolution. We therefore wanted to combine these imaging techniques to gain additional knowledge of the plasticity processes in response to median nerve injury. Nine patients with median ne…

Linking Essential Tremor to the Cerebellum: Physiological Evidence.

Essential tremor (ET), clinically characterized by postural and kinetic tremors, predominantly in the upper extremities, originates from pat … nt in ET being scarce, their impact is tangible, as summarized in this review. The electromyography-magnetoencephalography combination provided the first direct evidence of pathological alteration in cortico-subcortical communication, with a significant emphasis on the cerebellum. Furthermore, complex electromyography studies showed disruptions in the timing of agonist …

Neural sources of visual working memory maintenance in human parietal and ventral extrastriate visual cortex.

Maintaining information in visual working memory is reliably indexed by the contralateral delay activity (CDA) - a sustained modulation of the event-related potential (ERP) with a topographical maximum over posterior scalp regions contralateral to the memorized input. Based on scalp topography, it is hypothesized that the CDA reflects neural activity in the parietal cortex, but the precise cortical origin of underlying electric activity was never determined. Here we combine ERP recordings with magnetoencephalography based source localization to characterize the cortical current sources generat…

Prestimulus oscillatory alpha power and connectivity patterns predispose perceptual integration of an audio and a tactile stimulus.

To efficiently perceive and respond to the external environment, our brain has to perceptually integrate or segregate stimuli of different modalities. The temporal relationship between the different sensory modalities is therefore essential for the formation of different multisensory percepts. In this magnetoencephalography study, we created a paradigm where an audio and a tactile stimulus were presented by an ambiguous temporal relationship so that perception of physically identical audiotactile stimuli could vary between integrated (emanating from the same source) and segregated. This bistab…

Characterising intra- and inter-intrinsic network synchrony in combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.

Soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) exhibit elevated gamma-band synchrony in left fronto-temporal cortex, and connectivity measures in these regions correlate with comorbidities and PTSD severity, which suggests increased gamma synchrony is related to symptomology. However, little is known about the role of intrinsic, phase-synchronised networks in the disorder. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we characterised spectral connectivity in the default-mode, salience, visual, and attention networks during resting-state in a PTSD population and a trauma-exposed control group. Intr…

Modulation of alpha activity in the parieto-occipital area by distractors during a visuospatial working memory task: a magnetoencephalographic study.

Oscillatory brain activity is known to play an essential role in information processing in working memory. Recent studies have indicated tha … uospatial distractors during a delay period and examined neural activity from the whole brain using magnetoencephalography. The strength of event-related alpha activity was estimated using the temporal spectral evolution (TSE) method. The results were as follows: (1) an increase of alpha activity during the delay period as indicated by elevated TSE curves was observed i …

Inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex modulates early affective processing.

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) has often been suggested as a key modulator of emotional stimulus appraisal and regulation. There … TMS or sham stimulation, subjects viewed faces with fearful or neutral expressions while whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) was recorded. Due to the disrupted functioning of the right dlPFC, visual processing in bilateral parietal, temporal, and occipital areas was amplified starting at around 90 ms after stimulus onset. Moreover, increased fear-specific activation …

Repeated practice of a Go/NoGo visuomotor task induces neuroplastic change in the human posterior parietal cortex: an MEG study.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is strongly related to task performance by evaluating sensory cues and visually guided movements. Sensorimotor processing is improved by task repetition as indicated by reduced response time. We investigated practice-induced changes in PPC visuomotor processing during a Go/NoGo task in humans using 306-channel magnetoencephalography. Eleven healthy adult males were instructed to extend the right index finger when presented with the Go stimulus (a red circle), but not to react to the NoGo stimulus (a green circle or a red square). Magnetic fields over the vis…

Electromagnetic evidence of altered visual processing in autism.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) demonstrate intact or superior local processing of visual-spatial tasks. We investigated the hypothesis that in a disembedding task, autistic individuals exhibit a more local processing style than controls, which is reflected by altered electromagnetic brain activity in response to embedded stimuli and enhanced activity of early visual areas. Ten autistic and ten matched control participants underwent 151-channel whole-head magnetoencephalography. Participants were presented with 400 embedded or isolated letters ('S' or 'H') and asked to indicate…

Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex transcranial magnetic stimulation and electrode implant for intractable tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is a distressing symptom that affects up to 15% of the population; no satisfactory treatment exists. We present a novel surgical approach for the treatment of intractable tinnitus based on electrical extradural stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex via an electrode implant. Tinnitus can be considered an auditory phantom phenomenon similar to deafferentation pain in the somatosensory system. It is characterized by gamma-band activity in the frontal cortex that can be visualized with the use of electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, and functional magneti…

Cortical compensation associated with dysphagia caused by selective degeneration of bulbar motor neurons.

According to recent neuroimaging studies, swallowing is processed within multiple regions of the human brain. In contrast to this, little is known about the cortical contribution and compensatory mechanisms produced by impaired swallowing. In the present study, we therefore investigated the cortical topography of volitional swallowing in patients with X-linked bulbospinal neuronopathy (Kennedy disease, KD). Eight dysphagic patients with genetically proven KD and an age-matched healthy control group were studied by means of whole-head magnetoencephalography using a previously established swallo…

Onset and propagation of spike and slow wave discharges in human absence epilepsy: A MEG study.

PURPOSE: A nonlinear association and a source localization technique were used to describe the onset and propagation of spike-and-slow-wave discharges (SWDs) in children with absence seizures. Previous studies have emphasized a leading cortical role in the generation of absence seizures in genetic epileptic rats. METHODS: Synchronization between all magnetoencephalography (MEG) sensor-couples before and during SWDs in five patients was investigated over time. A source localization [beamformer, SAM(g(2))] technique was used to find brain regions associated with the origin of the spikes of the …

Parieto-occipital sources account for the increase in alpha activity with working memory load.

The role of oscillatory alpha activity (8-13 Hz) in cognitive processing remains an open question. It has been debated whether alpha activit … re the sources of the memory-dependent alpha activity are located. We recorded brain activity using magnetoencephalography (MEG) from human subjects performing a Sternberg memory task where faces were used as stimuli. Spectral analysis revealed a parametric increase in alpha activity with memory load over posterior brain areas. We then applied a source reconstruction te …

Effects of face contour and features on early occipitotemporal activity when viewing eye movement.

We investigated whether early activity in the occipitotemporal region, corresponding to human MT/V5, is influenced by a face contour and/or features such as the mouth using magnetoencephalography (MEG). We used apparent motion as visual stimuli and compared four conditions as follows: (1) CDL: A schematic face consisting of a face Contour, two Dots and a horizontal Line (2) CD: The Contour and two Dots (3) DL: Two Dots and a horizontal Line and (4) D: Two Dots only. Subjects described a simple movement of dots for D, but eye movement for CDL, DL and CD, though movement modalities were the same…

Persistent idiopathic facial pain exists independent of somatosensory input from the painful region: findings from quantitative sensory functions and somatotopy of the primary somatosensory cortex.

In 14 patients with unilateral persistent idiopathic facial pain (PIFP), classified according to the criteria of the International Headache Society, and 16 age-matched control subjects sensory functions were examined on the face by quantitative sensory testing (QST). Additionally, the somatotopy of the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) to tactile input from the pain area was evaluated by means of magnetoencephalography. Previously reported abnormalities in PIFP as a dishabituation of the R2 component of the blink reflex and psychiatric disturbances were co-evaluated. Psychiatric evaluation inc…
