The sensory innervation of the inferior eyelid is mainly derived from the inferior palpebral branch (IPb) of the infraorbital nerve (ION). This study aimed to investigate another, to our knowledge, previously unknown branch, and elucidate its location and distribution. Twelve sides from seven fresh frozen cadaveric Caucasian heads were used in this study. The specimens were derived from two male and four female adult cadavers age. The diameter of the IPb of the ION (D1) and branch arising from the upper wall of the infraorbital canal (D2), and distance between the branching points of this bran

Medial maxillectomy via lateral rhinotomy approach is used in the treatment for tumours affecting the lateral nasal wall. The most frequent complications are crusting, epicanthal scarring and epiphora. The authors report a rare case of blindness secondary to indirect optic neuropathy following medial maxillectomy undertaken to treat a malignant melanoma arising in the lateral nasal wall. It is important to keep in mind, the possibility of this rare complication, while patients are being counselled preoperatively for medial maxillectomy.

Prozostrodon brasiliensis and Therioherpeton cargnini are non-mammaliaform cynodonts that lived ~233 million years ago (late Carnian, Late Triassic) in western Gondwana. They represent some of the earliest divergent members of the clade Prozostrodontia, which includes "tritheledontids", tritylodontids, "brasilodontids", and mammaliaforms (including Mammalia as crown group). Here, we studied the endocranial anatomy (cranial endocast, nerves, vessels, ducts, ear region, and nasal cavity) of these two species. Our findings suggest that during the Carnian, early prozostrodonts had a brain with wel

Dental pulp is richly innervated with neurons containing calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or substance P (SP). Prior studies have demonstrated that inflammation alters these pulpal neuropeptides. In this study, we used a radioimmunoassay to evaluate the specificity of this response and the contribution of axonal transport. Rat mandibular molars were exposed and immunoreactive CGRP (iCGRP) and immunoreactive SP were measured. At 7 to 14 days after exposure, both pulpal iCGRP (73%) and immunoreactive SP (135%) displayed peak increases above control levels. This response was somatotopically

We consider the cranial base to be the primordial determinant of the head form and mandibular shape so common amongst (but not exclusive to) adult Polynesians. The flatness of the cranial base manifests its full influence only when growth of the upper facial skeleton is complete in early adulthood. We argue that during growth and maturation the upper facial skeleton and the maxillary occlusal plane are required to adjust in position to a major extent according to the template set out by the flat cranial base, with consequent obligatory and extreme adjustment in shape and position of the mandib

OBJECTIVE: The endoscopic transorbital approach (ETOA) has been recognized as a pivotal technique within the realm of endoscopic skull base surgery for the management of lesions situated in the skull base with paramedian and lateral positioning. In the execution of the ETOA targeting the anterolateral skull base, the surgical intervention is performed in the coronal plane from superficial to deep with the anatomy becoming progressively more complex. Given that the trajectory of the infraorbital nerve (ION) algins favorably with the surgical corridor of the ETOA to the anterolateral skull base,

The authors report a case of no light perception (NLP) vision in a patient with sinonasal melanoma after maxillary artery embolization secondary to presumptive compressive optic neuropathy. Two reports of NLP vision occurring after maxillary artery embolization are reported in the literature,, both occurring secondary to collateral blood flow to the ophthalmic artery resulting in central retinal artery occlusion. In the current case report, the presumed mechanism of vision loss is secondary to compressive optic neuropathy from local edema occurring after maxillary artery embolization.

The aim of the study was to compare in a randomized controlled clinical trial the use of the piezoelectric osteotomy as an alternative to the conventional approach in terms of surgery time, intraoperative blood loss, cut quality, nerve injury, and costs. One hundred ten patients who had orthognathic surgery procedures with bimaxillary osteotomy were divided into 2 groups: group A was treated with a piezosurgery device, and group B, with a reciprocating saw and bur.The piezosurgical bone osteotomy permitted individualized cut designs. The surgical time in group A was reduced, with a mean for the

Secondary trigeminal neuralgia (STN) follows an injury to the trigeminal nerve or one of its branches. Although rare, this condition results in great suffering and it is notoriously difficult to treat. The experimental analysis of painful neuropathy due to damage to the innervation of the limbs (e.g., the sciatic nerve) has progressed rapidly in recent years, but very few reports have appeared concerning experimental neuropathy in the trigemenial region. We report here an experimental rat model of trigeminal neuropathic pain produced by a chronic constriction injury to the infraorbital nerve (

The purpose of the current study was to investigate relationships between maxillary sinus (MS) dimensions and the bony structures associated with the infraorbital nerve (ION). Computed tomographic scans of 87 adult crania (174 sides) from four morphologically diverse groups (West Africans, East Africans, North Asians, Europeans) were utilized. Seven primary variables were collected: infraorbital canal (IOC) type; infraorbital foramen (IOF) shape; distance from the foramen rotundum to IOF (FR-IOF); distance from the posterior wall of the infraorbital groove to IOF (IOG-IOF); and MS length, brea

Even in the absence of explicit stimulation, rats emit patterns of rhythmic whisking movements. Because of their stereotyped nature and their persistence after sensory denervation and cortical ablation, whisking movements have been assumed to reflect the output of a central pattern generator (CPG). However, identification of a movement pattern as the product of a CPG requires evidence that its generation, patterning, and coordination are independent of sensory input. To provide such evidence, we used optoelectronic instrumentation to obtain high-resolution records of the movement trajectories

The trigeminovagal reflex manifests as a sudden onset of bradycardia, hypotension, and cardiac arrest in response to the stimulation of the trigeminal nerve. The incidence of trigeminovagal reflex in maxillofacial surgical procedures is approximately 1.6%. We report a case of asystole in a pediatric patient in whom a dental mouth gag triggered the trigeminovagal reflex during oral surgery. The patient was a 5-year-old boy who was scheduled to undergo extraction of maxillary supernumerary teeth. After tracheal intubation, anesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane and remifentanil. At the begin

Schwannoma is a benign neoplasm originating from schwann cells of the peripheral nerve sheath, and its occurrence in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is rare. We present a case of nasal schwannoma originating from the left nasal cavity, accompanied by bilateral nasal polyposis. A 66-year-old man presented with complaints of progressive left nasal obstruction, hyposmia, and headache. Anterior rhinoscopic and endoscopic examinations revealed a mass that almost completely filled the left nasal cavity. A polypoid mass was present in the right nasal cavity, as well. On computed tomography, th
