BACKGROUND: Primary and metastatic malignancies that originate in the sinonasal tract are rare and histologically diverse. The role of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and the cytomorphologic features of these tumors have not been specifically addressed.
METHODS: The authors reviewed 22 cytology cases (20 FNABs, 1 sputum sample, and 1 pleural fluid sample) from 18 patients with malignancies originating in the sinonasal tract (17 carcinomas, 3 melanomas, and 2 sarcomas) and assessed the cytomorphology, cytohistologic correlation, and ability of cytology to render a specific diagnosis.

High-grade sinonasal carcinomas are a cohort of malignant epithelial neoplasms arising in the sinonasal cavities with distinct, ominous morphologic features or lacking well-differentiated features that might otherwise classify them as less biologically worrisome. Recent advances in molecular profiling have led to the identification of several distinct tumor entities previously grouped together. These molecularly distinct lesions include NUT (midline) carcinoma, INI1 (SMARCB1)-deficient carcinoma, SMARCA4-deficient sinonasal carcinoma, and novel IDH-mutant sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma,

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an uncommon neoplasm characterized by local extension and an aggressive course. Treatment often includes a combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery, although the optimal strategy remains unclear. Here, we present the first reported case of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis from SNUC.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 28-year-old man with rapidly progressive headaches, congestion, and exophthalmos was found to have a nasal mass. Biopsy revealed sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. He had a transient response to chemotherapy follow

Fifty-one patients suffering from inverted papillomas of the nose and paranasal sinuses were reexamined in a retrospective study. Thirty-five had undergone surgery by an intranasal endoscopic approach and 16 had undergone surgery by an extranasal approach. The recurrence rate following endoscopic interventions was 17% (6/35), as compared to 19% (3/16) after extranasal operations. Endoscopic surgery proved to be successful even in the treatment of large lesions affecting the posterior ethmoidal sinus, the nasofrontal duct, or the sphenoidal sinus. Its indication thus no longer needs to be restr

OBJECTIVES: Surgical navigation systems (SNS) are now widely used in endoscopic endonasal surgery. Benefit, however, has not been fully studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an SNS in terms of performance of the surgical procedure and of surgeon satisfaction, in a prospective multicenter study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multicenter prospective study included patients undergoing endoscopic endonasal surgery using the electromagnetic DigiPointeur® (DGP) SNS in 16 French hospitals. An observation form, completed by the surgeon immediately at end of procedure, included

The pathology of poorly differentiated sinonasal malignancies has been the subject of extensive studies during the last decade, which resulted into significant developments in the definitions and histo-/pathogenetic classification of several entities included in the historical spectrum of "sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas (SNUC)" and poorly differentiated unclassified carcinomas. In particular, genetic defects leading to inactivation of different protein subunits in the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex have continuously emerged as the major (frequently the only) genetic player driving

A multitude of disease processes ranging from periodontitis to malignancies can lead to formation of solitary ulcer on the palate. Hence solitary ulcers of palate can often be a challenging one to diagnose. We report an interesting case of a diffuse large B cell lymphoma of the maxillary sinus which perforated the palatal bone and presented clinically as a palatal ulcer. Initially the lesion manifested as a small ill-defined swelling in the posterior palatal slope in relation to 24and25 which were mobile and hence was erroneously diagnosed as chronic periodontal abscess. This paper is intended

There are two major challenges in the early diagnosis of maxillary sinus carcinoma: the maxillary sinus is not susceptible to direct inspection and palpation, and symptoms are uncharacteristic. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the time interval between first symptoms noticed by the patient and the detection of the tumor on survival. 88 patients with maxillary sinus tumors were included in the retrospective study. Prognostic factors were identified through univariate analysis. Univariate analysis (p = 0.019) revealed a significant impact of the time interval from first symptom

INTRODUCTION: Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) is an exceedingly rare and aggressive tumor that carries a poor prognosis due to its non-specific presentation and advanced stage at time of diagnosis. Early detection and treatment are vital, with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery all being viable options. The literature is sparse and there is no consensus for optimal treatment. In surgical candidates, the otolaryngologist must have a vast skill set in order to resect the tumor with wide margins and reconstruct the defect in hopes of returning the patient to their pre-morbid state.

Otolaryngologists are called upon to evaluate and treat sinonasal masses discovered incidentally on imaging studies. Although common conditions such as sinonasal polyps and mucus retention cysts predominate, it is prudent practice to formulate a differential diagnosis to identify unusual conditions. We present a case of a maxillary sinus mass in a 78-year-old man that was discovered incidentally on brain imaging and subsequently identified on biopsy as an angiomyolipoma (AML). AMLs are benign hamartomatous tumors that rarely occur in extrarenal locations. Only a few cases have been reported in

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, arising from glandular tissues, found mainly in the head and neck. Generally, it presents insidiously but can behave aggressively making its course unpredictable. Surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy continue to be the cornerstone for its treatment. ACC remains extremely difficult to treat. The authors report a case of a 37-year-old woman with bloody rhinorrhea for 6 months. She was diagnosed with a left nasal cavity lesion that was biopsied, and the anatomopathological result showed ACC. The patient was submitted to a left extended max

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is recognized as one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas arising in late adulthood. Most MFHs arise from the extremities and the retroperitoneum, thus the incidence of head and neck MFH is relatively low. Because of its rare incidence, there are very few reports focusing on the imaging features of MFH arising in the maxillary sinus. A case of MFH of the maxillary sinus in a 67-year-old male patient is reported including imaging and pathological features.

Schneiderian papillomas are benign tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses often asymptomatic in their early stages. We report a case of a maxillary sinus oncocytic schneiderian papilloma first detected by positron-emission tomography by using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Schneiderian papillomas demonstrate increased FDG uptake, similar to that of other oncocytic tumors, making it important for otolaryngologists and radiologists to realize that high uptake of FDG does not necessarily indicate a malignant lesion.

This paper presents a case of true silent right maxillary sinus associated with facial haemangiomae. A 45-year-old woman consulted an ophthalmologist for an asymptomatic "sinking in" of her right eye over a six-month period. Two venous haemangiomae were found: one in the right lower eyelid and one on the right of the upper lip. Ophthalmologic examination revealed a prominent right superior palpebral sulcus. Evaluation included computed tomography (CT) of the orbits, showing an increased right orbital volume and right maxillary sinusitis. The patient underwent a right endoscopic uncinectomy and

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is the most common malignant salivary gland tumour of the maxillary sinus. The present study describes 24 cases seen over a period of 10 years at the Brazilian National Cancer Institute. Socio-demographic, clinical, pathological, and follow-up data were retrieved from the medical files for the period 1997-2006. The mean age of the patients was 51.1 years. Twenty-one (87.5%) presented advanced tumours. The main signs and symptoms found were a tumour mass (87.5%), pain (50%), nasal obstruction (25%), and epistaxis (20.8%). Most cases (62.5%) were treated with surge
