A comparison of trends in opioid dispensing patterns between Medicaid pharmacy claims and prescription drug monitoring program data.

PURPOSE: Public and private payers have implemented benefit limitations to reduce high-risk opioid prescriptions. The effect of these policies on the increase of out-pocket payment is unclear. To understand this gap, we compared the discrepancies in trends between opioid prescription fills vs claims among Medicaid beneficiaries. METHODS: Data from the Oregon Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) and Oregon Medicaid administrative claims were used to identify Medicaid beneficiaries 18 years and older enrolled at least one full month from 2015 to 2017. Generalized linear models assessed t…

Hepatitis C Virus Screening among Medicaid-Insured Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder across Substance Use Disorder Treatment Settings.

Objective: Although the rapid increase in opioid use disorders (OUD) and concurrent increase in Hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the United States is well-documented, little is known about HCV testing among high-risk populations. We examine patterns of HCV testing across OUD treatment settings for individuals with OUD in New York. Methods: Using 2014 New York Medicaid claims data, we identified OUD diagnosis, OUD treatment (methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, other treatment (inpatient or outpatient non-medication-based psychosocial treatment, such as psychotherapy) and no treatment) utilization a…

Monitoring of Recommended Metabolic Laboratory Parameters Among Medicaid Recipients on Second-Generation Antipsychotics in Federally Qualified Health Centers.

BACKGROUND: In 2004, a consensus statement outlining recommended metabolic monitoring for patients prescribed second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) was published. More than a decade later, suboptimal adherence rates to these recommendations continue to be reported, which could lead to long-term and costly complications. OBJECTIVES: To define the prevalence of appropriately monitored Medicaid patients receiving care at federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) prescribed SGAs. METHODS: This was a retrospective study examining electronic health record and Medicaid claims data to assess the …

The economic burden of advanced liver disease among patients with hepatitis C virus: a large state Medicaid perspective.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) may progress to advanced liver disease (ALD), including decompensated cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). ALD can lead to significant clinical and economic consequences, including liver transplantation. This study evaluated the health care costs associated with ALD among HCV infected patients in a Medicaid population. METHODS: Using Florida Medicaid claims data, cases were patients with at least 1 diagnosis of HCV or prescription therapy for HCV (ribavirin plus interferon, peginterferon, or interferon alfacon-1) prior to an incident ALD…

Addressing women's health needs and improving birth outcomes: results from a peer-to-peer state Medicaid learning project.

High rates of maternal mortality, infant mortality, and preterm births, as well as continuing disparities in pregnancy outcomes, have prompted a number of state Medicaid agencies to focus on improving the quality and continuity of care delivered to women of childbearing age. As part of a peer-to-peer learning project, seven Medicaid agencies worked to develop the programs, policies, and infrastructures needed to identify and reduce women's health risks either prior to or between pregnancies. The states also identified public health strategies. These strategies led to a policy checklist to help…

The Impact of Medicaid Expansion on Insurance Coverage and Metastatic Disease at Diagnosis for Racial and Ethnic Subgroups Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Improved access to health care following the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion may affect prostate cancer (PCa) disease course. We hypothesized that Medicaid expansion states (ESs) experienced greater Medicaid coverage gains and lower proportions of metastatic disease at the time of detection. METHODS: We analyzed 1.02 million patients aged 40 to 64 years diagnosed with PCa from 2004 to 2022 using the National Cancer Database. We generated descriptive statistics on demographic variables and divided patients into groups using diagnosis date (pre expansion and post expansio…
