[Self-awareness and autobiographical memory in Lewy body disease].

Lewy body disease (LBD) is characterized by early damage to the insula, a central region of the "self" networks that refer to self-awareness and autobiographical memory. Our work confirms that, from the prodromal stage of LBD, there is a global collapse of the self, characterized by an alteration from the most elementary and the most elaborate components, linked to insular damage.

Smartwatch reminders can support time-based prospective memory in patients with Korsakoff's syndrome.

Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to remember to perform an intended task. PM is often impaired in individuals with Korsakoff's syndrome (KS), a neuropsychiatric disorder caused by severe thiamine deficiency resulting from malnutrition, typically as a consequence of structural alcohol abuse. This study aimed to investigate whether smartwatch reminders were as effective as verbal in-person reminders in prompting individuals to perform time-based PM tasks. Twelve individuals with KS, residing in a long-term care facility, were asked to complete PM tasks that were already part of their daily

The update of self-identity: Importance of assessing autobiographical memory in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder is a leading global cause of disability. There is a growing interest for memory in mood disorders since it might constitute an original tool for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. MDD is associated with impaired autobiographical memory characterized by a tendency to overgeneral memory, rather than vivid episodic self-defining memory, which is mandatory for problem-solving and projection in the future. This memory bias is maintained by three mechanisms: ruminations, avoidance, and impaired executive control. If we adopt a broader and comprehensive perspective, we ca

Hooked on a memory: How rumination about past positive events might contribute to grandiose ideas?

OBJECTIVES: Dwelling about positive experiences has been found to be positively related to mania and grandiose ideas. Nevertheless, besides some important limitations, past research has also neglected the nature (or characteristics) of memories individuals dwell on, and that might be specifically associated with grandiose ideas. Thus, the present study aimed to replicate previous studies while considering the role of specificity and the importance of memory used to increase grandiose feelings. METHOD: In total, 219 participants were included and, after completing the memory induction, were ra

Shape of U: The Nonmonotonic Relationship Between Object-Location Memory and Expectedness.

The schema-linked interactions between medial prefrontal and medial temporal lobe (SLIMM) model predicts that memory for object locations is a U-shaped function of the expectancy of those locations. Using immersive virtual reality, we presented participants with 20 objects in locations that varied in their congruency with a kitchen schema. Bayes factors across four experiments (137 adults in total) confirmed the (preregistered) prediction of better memory for highly expected and unexpected locations relative to neutral locations. This U shape was found in location recall and in forced-choice r

Longitudinal change in serial position scores in older adults with entorhinal and hippocampal neuropathologies.

OBJECTIVE: Serial position scores on verbal memory tests are sensitive to early Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related neuropathological changes that occur in the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus. The current study examines longitudinal change in serial position scores as markers of subtle cognitive decline in older adults who may be in preclinical or at-risk states for AD. METHODS: This study uses longitudinal data from the Religious Orders Study and the Rush Memory and Aging Project. Participants (n = 141) were included if they did not have dementia at enrollment, completed follow-up assessments

A network psychometric approach to neurocognition in early Alzheimer's disease.

In a typical pattern of Alzheimer's disease onset, episodic memory decline is predominant while decline in other neurocognitive domains is subsidiary or absent. Such descriptions refer to relationships between neurocognitive domains as well as deficits within domains. However, the former relationships are rarely statistically modelled. This study used psychometric network analysis to model relationships between neurocognitive variables in cognitive normality (CN), amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and early Alzheimer's disease (eAD). Gaussian graphical models with extended Bayesian in

Specificity and wealth of autobiographical memories in restrictive and mixed anorexic patients.

The reduced specificity of positive and negative autobiographical memories observed in anorexic (AN) patients may reflect a global disturbance in their emotional information processing. However, their emotional difficulties may differ according to the subtype of AN, implying possible differences in the manifestation of autobiographical memory impairments. The aims of the study were (1) to confirm the autobiographical memory deficits in AN patients in terms of specificity and wealth of memories, and (2) to compare autobiographical deficits according to the AN subtype: restrictive type (AR) or b

Future-oriented mental time travel in individuals with disordered gambling.

This study investigated the ability of individuals with disordered gambling to imagine future events. Problem gamblers (n=35) and control participants (n=35) were asked to imagine positive and negative future events for three temporal distances (one week, one year, 5-10years). Then, a variety of phenomenological aspects of their future thoughts (e.g., sensory and contextual details, autonoetic consciousness) were rated. Compared to control subjects, problem gamblers generated fewer positive and negative events across all temporal distances, an impairment that was correlated to verbal fluency s

Effects of self-relevant cues and cue valence on autobiographical memory specificity in dysphoria.

Reduced autobiographical memory specificity (rAMS) is a characteristic memory bias observed in depression. To corroborate the capture hypothesis in the CaRFAX (capture and rumination, functional avoidance, executive capacity and control) model, we investigated the effects of self-relevant cues and cue valence on rAMS using an adapted Autobiographical Memory Test conducted with a nonclinical population. Hierarchical linear modelling indicated that the main effects of depression and self-relevant cues elicited rAMS. Moreover, the three-way interaction among valence, self-relevance, and depressio

Adults' retractions of childhood sexual abuse allegations: high-stakes and the (in)validation of recollection.

Retractors are individuals who have repudiated their earlier claims of having been sexually abused. There has been relatively little research conducted with this population. The growing literature on memory verification strategies and non-believed memories provide a conceptual and empirical lens through which to revisit the accounts of these individuals to try and learn more about the process of making and retracting high stake, consequential beliefs or recollections about the past. Do people attempt to validate or invalidate beliefs and recollections of such events in the same way as they do

Beneficial effects of foreign language learning and aerobic exercise on dentate gyrus volume and mnemonic discrimination in healthy older adults: Results from a randomized controlled trial.

Protecting hippocampal structures, such as the cornu ammonis 3 and dentate gyrus (CA3/DG), that are tied to mnemonic discrimination could be a promising approach to mitigate the age-related decline in episodic memory. This study examines the potential benefits of cognitive and physical engagement, specifically language learning and moderate aerobic exercise, for maintaining hippocampal subfield integrity and memory performance. In a randomized controlled trial involving 142 healthy older adults (aged 63-78 years), we investigated the effects of a 6-month regime comprising language learning, ae

The BLTT (Bonn Leistungs Tracking Test) in Patients with Temporal Lobe Gliomas-Feasibility of a Novel Neurocognitive Test Battery.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive testing in neuro-oncological patients often relies on time-intensive batteries with limited feasibility in this patient cohort. We evaluated the feasibility of the Bonn Leistungs Tracking Test (BLTT), a time-efficient screening tool assessing episodic memory, semantic memory, and executive functions in patients with high-grade temporal lobe gliomas. METHODS: Twenty patients undergoing resection of temporal high-grade glioma between 2019 and 2022 underwent preoperative cognitive assessment using either the BLTT or a comprehensive neuropsychological battery routinely

The validation of a new online cognitive assessment tool: The MyCognition Quotient.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive impairment affects many psychiatric patients, influences daily functioning, and should be an important treatment focus. Assessment of cognitive status is crucial in cognitive remediation studies. However, current test batteries have limitations. A new, online tool, the MyCognition Quotient (MyCQ), was developed to assess cognition within 30 min. We present the psychometric properties and aim to determine the validity of the MyCQ by comparing it with the Cambridge Neuropsychological Automated Test Battery (CANTAB). METHODS: Eighty-seven patients diagnosed with obsessive c

Memory in humans is unaffected by central H1-antagonism, while objectively and subjectively measured sedation is increased.

Animal literature suggests an important role for histamine in memory. In humans, this hypothesis has been scarcely tested and results from studies that have addressed this are conflicting. Second, impaired memory performance may be secondary to sedation. This study aimed to determine whether a centrally active antihistamine impairs memory performance and to dissociate such effects from sedation. Eighteen healthy volunteers received single oral doses of dexchlorpheniramine 4 mg, lorazepam 1mg and placebo in a 3-way, double blind, crossover designed study. The active control lorazepam impaired e

The mosaic of experience: How individual differences in attention and working memory shape event segmentation.

Episodic memories, although experienced as continuous, are structured into discrete events, a process supported by working memory (WM) and attentional control. Yet, the causal contributions of these mechanisms remain underspecified. This review synthesizes behavioral, cognitive, and neural findings from healthy aging and three cognitive profiles with known WM and attentional control impairments (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder) to clarify how these mechanisms shape event segmentation. Drawing on converging findings across these groups, we o

Recreational drug use and prospective memory.

Prospective memory (PM) impairment in recreational drug users has been documented in recent years. However, most studies on the effects of drugs on PM contain several methodological challenges, such as small sample size (< 100 participants), unrepresentative sample type (e.g., student or patient), short abstinence period (< 7 days), and lack of control of potential confounds (e.g., sleep and IQ). The present study investigated the possible consequences of recreational drug use on prospective memory, using self-report and lab-based prospective memory measures while overcoming the methodological

Prospective memory impairment in neurological disorders: implications and management.

Prospective memory is a core neurocognitive ability that refers to memory for future intentions, such as remembering to take medications and to switch off appliances. Any breakdown in prospective memory, therefore, has serious implications for the ability to function independently in everyday life. In many neurological disorders, including Parkinson disease and dementia, prospective memory deficits are common even in the earliest stages and typically become more severe with disease progression. Consequently, clinical assessment of prospective memory is of critical importance. This article prov

Beneficial Effect of Minimal Interference on Item Memory But Not on Source Memory in Alzheimer's Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Research suggests beneficial effects of minimal interference on item memory in mild Alzheimer's disease (AD). We conducted a study to test whether these beneficial effects extend to source memory, i.e., the ability to remember the episodic context in which an information was previously acquired. METHOD: Twenty-six mild AD participants and 28 controls manipulated six objects or watched the experimenter manipulating six other objects. After immediate item recall ("what were the items?") and source recall ("by whom the items were previously manipulated?"), an interference or a minima

The memory metaphors held by ordinary people: an exploratory study.

Metaphors are widely used by researchers to communicate ideas in cognitive psychology. This is the first study to systematically explore the naïve psychology of human memory metaphors. We attained this goal by surveying a large sample of the adult population resident in Northern and Central Italy (N = 846). Participants were administered four self-report questionnaires assessing their favourite memory metaphor, memory beliefs, autobiographical memory experience, and metamemory. Overall, the memory metaphors most endorsed by our sample were store, camera, computer, and map. Personal motives und
