Perception and memory are traditionally thought of as separate cognitive functions, supported by distinct brain regions. The canonical perspective is that perceptual processing of visual information is supported by the ventral visual stream, whereas long-term declarative memory is supported by the medial temporal lobe. However, this modular framework cannot account for the increasingly large body of evidence that reveals a role for early visual areas in long-term recognition memory and a role for medial temporal lobe structures in high-level perceptual processing. In this article, we review re

Hippocampal NMDA receptors (NMDARs) and NMDAR-dependent synaptic plasticity are widely considered crucial substrates of long-term spatial memory, although their precise role remains uncertain. Here we show that Grin1(ΔDGCA1) mice, lacking GluN1 and hence NMDARs in all dentate gyrus and dorsal CA1 principal cells, acquired the spatial reference memory water maze task as well as controls, despite impairments on the spatial reference memory radial maze task. When we ran a spatial discrimination water maze task using two visually identical beacons, Grin1(ΔDGCA1) mice were impaired at using spatial

Improved memory after prompted retrieval, also known as the testing effect, is evidenced in adults to support long term memory, but rarely examined in children in pre-school or with intellectual disabilities, such as Down syndrome (DS). This study examined episodic memory across one-month, manipulating the presentation of episodic information to compare testing versus restudy of arbitrary event sequences, and the effect of sleep variables. Retrieval rates were compared at 5-minute and one-month delays in 52 children with DS (aged 6-18, 27 male, 24 White) compared to 59 children with typical de

Posttranslational modifications in proteins play critical roles in synaptic plasticity and memory. In addition, the enduring form of long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term memory require synthesis of proteins. Some of the mRNAs are present in the dendrites and are locally translated into proteins. Microtubules play critical roles in neuronal transport including the transport of mRNAs from the cell body to the dendrites. Here, we show that KCl depolarization increases acetylation of α-tubulin, a constituent of microtubules, in the CA1 region of the hippocampal slices. Furthermore, activatio

Higher plasma homocysteine levels have been found in females with anorexia nervosa. Furthermore, elevated homocysteine levels are associated with cognitive decline in dementia and healthy elderly people. Aim of this prospective study was to investigate a possible association between homocysteine serum levels and Clinically well known cognitive deficits in females with eating disorders. We found that moderately elevated plasma homocysteine levels were associated with normal short- and long-term verbal memory while normal plasma homocysteine levels were associated with poorer memory performance

The major goal in vaccination is establishment of long-term, prophylactic humoral memory to a pathogen. Two major components to long-lived humoral memory are plasma cells for the production of specific immunoglobulin and memory B cells that survey for their specific antigen in the periphery for later affinity maturation, proliferation, and differentiation. The study of human B cell memory has been aided by the discovery of a general marker for B cell memory, expression of CD27; however, new data suggests the existence of CD27⁻ memory B cells as well. These recently described non-canonical memo

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are known to cause neuropsychological impairment. However, the specific domains that are affected and their outcomes following excision are not studied in the past. In the current study, we evaluated different neuropsychological domains that are involved in colloid cyst patients and how they fared on long-term follow-up after the excision.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of sixteen colloid cyst patients managed in a tertiary care center were included in the study. The clinical presentation, largest cyst diameter, and the presence of ventriculomegaly using the Evans i

B cells can influence T cell responses by directly presenting Ag or by secreting Ab that binds to Ag to form immunogenic complexes. Conflicting evidence suggests that persisting Ag-Ab complexes propagate long-term T cell memory; yet, other data indicate that memory cells can survive without specific Ag or MHC. In this study, the roles of B cells and Ag-Ab complexes in T cell responses to lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infection were investigated using B cell-deficient or B cell-competent mice. Despite normal lymphocyte expansion after acute infection, B cell-deficient mice rapidly l

INTRODUCTION: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability, affecting cognitive function and increasing the risk of early-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). The endocannabinoid system may serve as a therapeutic target for cognitive deficits by inhibiting cannabinoid type-1 receptor (CB1R) function.
METHODS: CB1R expression was analyzed in the hippocampi of aged DS-associated AD (DSAD) individuals and middle-aged Ts65Dn mice. Long-term oral treatment with the CB1R antagonist rimonabant was used to assess its effects on memory and neuroinflammation in the Ts65Dn m

Neural identity and wiring specificity are fundamental to brain function. Factors affecting proliferation of the progenitor cells leading to an expansion or regression of specific neuronal clusters are expected to challenge the process of formation of precise synaptic connections with their partners and their further integration to result in proper functional neural circuitry. We have investigated the role of scalloped, a Hippo pathway gene in Drosophila brain development and have shown that its function is critical to regulate proliferation of Mushroom Body Neuroblasts and to limit the neuron

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants widely detected in human biological samples. As regulatory restrictions on long-chain PFAS such as PFOA and PFOS have increased, short-chain alternatives, including perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) have been widely adopted due to their lower bioaccumulation potential. However, their potential neurodevelopmental effects remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the long-term behavioral and neurobiological consequences of chronic PFHxA exposure beginning during the neurodevelopmental period and cont

T lymphocytes, essential components of the adaptive immune system, orchestrate pathogen-specific responses and long-term immunological memory through heterogeneous subsets with distinct functional properties and spatial distributions. This comprehensive review delineates the origin, distribution, and functional specialization of long-lasting T cell subsets-naive T cells (Tn), stem cell-like memory T cells (Tscm), central memory T cells (Tcm), effector memory T cells (Tem), and tissue-resident memory T cells (Trm)-across physiological and pathological contexts, with a particular focus on aging

OBJECTIVE: Accelerated Long-Term Forgetting (ALF) is when newly learned information "decays" faster than expected over an extended period and is associated with temporal-lobe epilepsy (TLE). There is no well-established method for assessing ALF despite its apparent prevalence. We hypothesized that evidencing an absence of practice effects may represent an effective approach to detecting ALF. We sought to determine if this method, along with the long-delay memory tests, could evidence ALF in a single case.
METHOD: We present a 66-year-old male with TLE who had memory complaints despite a stabl

Depression-induced cognitive impairment has recently been given more attention in research. However, the relationship between depression and different types of memory is still not clear. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) is a commonly used animal model of depression in which animals are exposed to chronic unpredictable environmental and psychological stressors, which mimics daily human life stressors. This study investigated the impact of different durations of CUMS on various types of memory (short- and long-term spatial memory and recognition memory) and investigated CUMS' impact on t

Human natural killer T cells (NKTs) are innate-like T lymphocytes increasingly used for cancer immunotherapy. Here we show that human NKTs expressing the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-12 (IL-12) undergo extensive and sustained molecular and functional reprogramming. Specifically, IL-12 instructs and maintains a Th1-polarization program in NKTs in vivo without causing their functional exhaustion. Furthermore, using CD62L as a marker of memory cells in human NKTs, we observe that IL-12 maintains long-term CD62L-expressing memory NKTs in vivo. Notably, IL-12 initiates a de novo programmin

Semantic and phonological loop effects on verbal working memory were examined among middle-age adults with Down syndrome and those with unspecified mental retardation in the context of Baddeley's working memory model. Recall was poorer for phonologically similar, semantically similar, and long words compared to recall of dissimilar short words. Compared to their peers, participants with Down syndrome had poorer recall in all categories except phonologically similar words. Most interestingly, semantic similarity lowered recall scores only in participants with Down syndrome. This selective effec

OBJECTIVE: Higher well-being is consistently associated with better cognitive health. However, little is known about how long-term trajectories of well-being are associated with cognitive health or modifiable dementia risk factors, particularly among populations at high risk for dementia. The current study addressed these open questions.
METHOD: The California Families Project, a 14-year longitudinal study of Mexican-origin adults living in the United States (N = 1,240), was used to estimate long-term trajectories of life satisfaction and optimism and whether the level and/or slope of each fa

Accurate timing prediction of surgery is essential for efficient operating room scheduling and ensuring patient care. This study proposes a two-layered Accurate Surgical Time Prediction (ASTP) framework. The first layer combines feature importance and advanced machine learning models to estimate surgical time. After preprocessing, two complementary interpretable AI methods were used: Long Short Term Memory with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values and Random Forest permutation importance, to determine the importance of features. In the second layer, subsets of features (TOP-K) were prog
