Dithiocarbamate-Functionalized Cellulose for High-Efficiency Separation of Critical Metals from Organic Effluents.

The effective separation of critical metals (CMs) from organic solvent waste streams represents a formidable challenge in industrial environmental management, primarily because conventional aqueous-phase separation technologies, such as ion exchange and precipitation, struggle with the unique physicochemical properties of organic media. In this study, we introduce a highly effective dithiocarbamate-functionalized cellulose sorbent (DPE6) as a solvent-tolerant platform designed to overcome these limitations in the capture of CMs (NiII and PbII) from polar organic solvents. DPE6 demonstrated exc…

Contamination of mussels with microorganisms, metals, and biotoxins: a historical analysis from Portugal.

Mussels (Mytilus spp.) are an important seafood product and a sentinel species for environmental contamination. This work aimed to analyze Portuguese monitoring data for mussels to identify seasonal and spatial trends in microbiological, biotoxins, and metal contamination. Data, from 2013 to 2025, were obtained from publicly available records from the official control program. Harvested mussels were generally safe for consumption, with most samples complying with microbiological Class A parameters (75.5%) and metals only exceeding regulatory limits once. Conversely, okadaic acid toxin group (i…

Nematic and chiral superconductivity emerging within the loop-current phase in kagome metals.

The kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = Cs, Rb, K) host multiple symmetry-breaking phases, including charge-density-wave and loop-current orders, and exhibit highly exotic superconductivity with pronounced nematicity and chirality. Remarkably, even dilute impurities transform this exotic superconducting state into an isotropic s-wave state. These observations pose a challenge to existing theoretical scenarios. We show that loop-current order induces nematic chiral d-wave superconductivity in kagome metals. The loop-current-induced orbital magnetization (OM) stabilizes one chiral superconducting channels…

Sustainable starch-microcellulose composite hydrogels for efficient removal of heavy metals from water.

This work investigates the development of sustainable composite hydrogels based on corn starch and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) derived from eucalyptus sawdust for the removal of copper from aqueous environments. The incorporation of MFC into the starch matrix reduced solubility from 55.2 % to 36.4 %, increased true density from 1.466 to 1.525 g/cm3, and decreased surface area with increasing MFC content (from 4.010 to 1.814 m2/g). The MFC presented the following metallic affinity order: Cu2+ > Mn3+ > Ni2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+ > Cr6+. Adsorption experiments showed enhanced Cu2+ removal with incre

Can bystander effects of metals in Daphnia magna be mediated by DNA methylation?

The bystander phenomenon can be described as the detection of effects in non-exposed cells/individuals when these come in contact with expos … ty and oxidative stress. DNA methylation changes were also detected in bystander organisms for both metals, and bystander epigenetic responses targeted specifically the Alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase alkB and Tetraspanin 47 F genes, therefore relating to the cellular signalling of metal stress and the coping with metal-induced DNA damage. Take …

Ecotoxicological Impacts of Heavy Metals on Medicinal Plant Quality and Rhizosphere Microbial Communities.

With the rapid expansion of industrial activities, the accumulation of heavy metals in the environment has become a serious threat to ecological security and public health. Rhizosphere microorganisms play a crucial role in supporting the growth and quality of medicinal plants by facilitating nutrient uptake and regulating hormonal balance. However, medicinal plants can absorb heavy metals from contaminated soils during growth, resulting in toxic metal accumulation in plant tissues and reduced efficacy of active compounds. At the same time, excessive heavy metal levels suppress rhizosphere micr…

The Influence of Alkali Metals on the Sintering Mineralization Process of Iron Ore.

To investigate the influence of alkali metal compounds in different forms on the sintering mineralization process of iron ore, the basic sintering characteristics of iron ore with alkali metal contents ranging from 0 to 4% were measured using the micro-sintering method, and the influence mechanism was analyzed using thermodynamic analysis and first-principles calculations. The results showed that (1) the addition of KCl/NaCl increased the lowest assimilation temperature (LAT) and the index of liquid-phase fluidity (ILF), while that of K2CO3/Na2CO3 decreased the LAT but increased the ILF of iro

Nanoscale chemical imaging of phagocytosis: A battle for metals between host and microbe.

The human body employs nutritional immunity to restrict essential micronutrients, such as zinc, from invading pathogens, impeding their growth and replication. Here, we applied an advanced nanochemical imaging technique, synchrotron radiation-based X-ray fluorescence (SR-XRF), on vitrified polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) during the occurrence of phagocytosis of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Nanoscopic SR-XRF provided trace elemental distributions at 50 nm spatial resolution, revealing the metal interplay between PMNs and S. cerevisiae. Our results were complemented with X-ray holographic nano

Triggering antibacterial activity of a common plant by biosorption of selected heavy metals.

The presented study proposes an efficient utilization of a common Thymus serpyllum L. (wild thyme) plant as a highly potent biosorbent of Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions and the efficient interaction of the copper-laden plant with two opportunistic bacteria. Apart from biochars that are commonly used for adsorption, here we report the direct use of native plant, which is potentially interesting also for soil remediation. The highest adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and Pb(II) ions (qe = 12.66 and 53.13 mg g-1, respectively) was achieved after 10 and 30 min of adsorption, respectively. Moreover, the Cu-la

Recent Advances in Targeting Transition Metals (Copper, Iron, and Zinc) in Alzheimer's Disease.

Changes in the transition metal homeostasis in the brain are closely linked with Alzheimer's disease (AD), including intraneuronal iron accumulation and extracellular copper and zinc pooling in the amyloid plague. The brain copper, zinc, and iron surplus are commonly acknowledged characteristics of AD, despite disagreements among some. This has led to the theory that oxidative stress resulting from abnormal homeostasis of these transition metals may be a causative explanation behind AD. In the nervous system, the interaction of metals with proteins appears to be an essential variable in the de…

Biochemical interactions between the Atm1-like transporter from Novosphingobium aromaticivorans and heavy metals.

Novosphingobium aromaticivorans has the ability to survive in harsh environments by virtue of its suite of iron-containing oxygenases that biodegrade an astonishing array of aromatic compounds. It is also resistant to heavy metals through Atm1, an ATP-binding cassette protein that mediates active efflux of heavy metals conjugated to glutathione. However, Atm1 orthologues in higher organisms have been implicated in the intracellular transport of organic iron complexes. Our hypothesis suggests that the ability of Atm1 to remove heavy metals is related to the need for regulated iron handling in N…

Diborane and Triborane Species in the Coordination Sphere of Group-8 Transition Metals.

The synthesis and structural elucidation of a series of ruthenium diborane and triborane compounds are described. Treatment of [Cp*Ru(PPh3)2Cl] (1) (Cp* = 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; PPh3 = triphenylphosphine) with [BH3·THF] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) at 60 °C led to the formation of the hydrogen-rich ruthena-octahydrotetraborane arachno-[2-{Cp*Ru(PPh3)B3H8}] (2). The chemistry of 2 is explored with [Fe2(CO)9] at room temperature, which resulted in the formation of a metal-stabilized triborane species, [{Cp*Ru(PPh3)}(μ3-η1:η2:η2-B3H6){Fe2(CO)7}] (3). Compound 3 can be considered as a t
