Optimizing Intermediate Adsorption on Pt Sites via Triple-Phase Interface Electronic Exchange for Methanol Oxidation.

For the most commonly applied platinum-based catalysts of direct methanol fuel cells, the adsorption ability toward reaction intermediates, including CO and OH, plays a vital role in their catalytic activity and antipoisoning in anodic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Herein, guided by a theoretical mechanism study, a favorable modulation of the electronic structure and intermediate adsorption energetics for Pt active sites is achieved by constructing the triple-phase interfacial structure between tin oxide (SnO2), platinum (Pt), and nitrogen-doped graphene (NG). From the strong electronic e…

Mn-promoted MoS2 catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation: enhanced methanol selectivity due to MoS2/MnOx interfaces.

Considering the alarming scenario of climate change, CO2 hydrogenation to methanol is considered a key process for phasing out fossil fuels by means of CO2 utilization. In this context, MoS2 catalysts have recently shown to be promising catalysts for this reaction, especially in the presence of abundant basal-plane sulfur vacancies and due to synergistic mechanisms with other phases. In this work, Mn-promoted MoS2 prepared by a hydrothermal method presents considerable selectivity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol in comparison with pure MoS2 and other promoters such as K and Co. Interestingly…

Boosting CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Monolayer MoS2 Nanotubes by Creating More Strained Basal Planes.

The controlled creation, selective exposure, and activation of more basal planes while simultaneously minimizing the generation and exposure of edge sites are crucial for accelerating methanol synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation over MoS2 catalysts but remain a bottleneck. Here, we report a facile method to fabricate heteronanotube catalysts with single-layer MoS2 coaxially encapsulating the carbon nanotubes (CNTs@MoS2) through host-guest chemistry. Inheriting the long tubular structure of CNTs, the grown MoS2 nanotubes exhibit significantly more basal planes than bulk MoS2 crystals. More importa…

Backbone-functionalised ruthenium diphosphine complexes for catalytic upgrading of ethanol and methanol to iso-butanol.

Efficient catalysts for Guerbet-type ethanol/methanol upgrading to iso-butanol have been developed via Michael addition of a variety of amines to ruthenium-coordinated dppen (1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene). All catalysts produce over 50% iso-butanol yield with >90% selectivity in 2 h with catalyst 1 showing the best activity (74% yield after this time). The selectivity and turnover number approach 100% and 1000 respectively using catalyst 6. The presence of uncoordinated functionalised donor groups in these complexes results in a more stable catalyst compared to unfunctionalised analogues…

Promoted hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol over single-atom Cu sites with Na+-decorated microenvironment.

Although single-atom Cu sites exhibit high efficiency in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, they are prone to forming Cu nanoparticles due to reduction and aggregation under reaction conditions, especially at high temperatures. Herein, single-atom Cu sites stabilized by adjacent Na+ ions have been successfully constructed within a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalyst, namely MOF-808-NaCu. It is found that the electrostatic interaction between the Na+ and Hδ- species plays a pivotal role in upholding the atomic dispersion of Cu in MOF-808-NaCu during CO2 hydrogenation, even at temperatures …

In Situ Carbon-Confined MoSe2 Catalyst with Heterojunction for Highly Selective CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

The synthesis of methanol from CO2 hydrogenation is an effective measure to deal with global climate change and an important route for the chemical fixation of CO2. In this work, carbon-confined MoSe2 (MoSe2@C) catalysts were prepared by in situ pyrolysis using glucose as a carbon source. The physico-chemical properties and catalytic performance of CO2 hydrogenation to yield methanol were compared with MoSe2 and MoSe2/C. The results of the structure characterization showed MoSe2 displayed few layers and a small particle size. Owing to the synergistic effect of the Mo2C-MoSe2 heterojunction and…

Kinetic Modeling and Techno-Economic Analysis of a Methanol-to-Gasoline Production Repurposed Refinery Equipment.

Methanol-to-gasoline (MtG) is an alternative process for the production of liquid fuel that involves the conversion of methanol into light and heavy hydrocarbons. The attractiveness of this option relies on multiple feedstocks that can be used to produce methanol, which can impact the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere in comparison to petroleum-based feedstocks. However, one of the challenges of this alternative gasoline production is its high investment cost. This study presents a solution to increase affordability by using repurposed equipment from petrochemical industries. The st…

Unlocking the Potential for Methanol Synthesis via Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Using CoPc-Based Molecular Catalysts.

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce methanol (CH3OH) is an attractive yet challenging approach due to a lack of selective electrocatalysts. An immobilized cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecular catalyst has emerged as a promising electrocatalyst for CH3OH synthesis, demonstrating decent activity and selectivity through a CO2-CO-CH3OH cascade reaction. However, CoPc's performance is limited by its weak binding strength toward the CO intermediate. Recent advancements in molecular modification aimed at enhancing CO intermediate binding have shown great promise in improvi…

Mesoporous Hollow Carbon Sphere-Embedded MXene Architectures Decorated with Ultrafine Rh Nanocrystals toward Methanol Electrooxidation.

The development of advanced Pt-alternative anode electrocatalysts with high activity and reliable stability is critical to overcoming the technical challenges of direct methanol fuel cells. Here, we propose a robust bottom-up strategy for the spatial construction of mesoporous hollow carbon sphere (HCS)-embedded MXene architectures decorated with ultrafine Rh nanocrystals (Rh/HCS-MX) via stereoscopic coassembly reactions. The rational intercalation of HCS effectively separates the MXene nanowalls to achieve a rapid mass-transfer efficiency, while the intimate coupling of the hybrid carrier wit…

Micro-Structure Engineering in Pd-InOx Catalysts and Mechanism Studies for CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

Significant interest has emerged for the application of Pd-In2O3 catalysts as high-performance catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH. However, precise active site control in these catalysts and understanding their reaction mechanisms remain major challenges. In this investigation, a series of Pd-InOx catalysts were synthesized, revealing three distinct types of active sites: In-O, Pd-O(H)-In, and Pd2In3. Lower Pd loadings exhibited Pd-O(H)-In sites, while higher loadings resulted in Pd2In3 intermetallic compounds. These variations impacted catalytic performance, with Pd-O(H)-In catalysts sh

Kinetic Insights into Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation at Atmospheric Pressure over Intermetallic Pd2Ga Catalyst.

This study presents a single-site microkinetic model for methanol synthesis by CO2 hydrogenation over intermetallic Pd2Ga/SiO2. A reaction path analysis (RPA) combining theoretical results and realistic catalyst surface reaction data is established to elucidate the reaction mechanism and kinetic models of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol and CO. The RPA leads to the derivation of rate expressions for both reactions without presumptions about the most abundant reactive intermediate (MARI) and rate-determining step (rds). The formation of H2COOH* is found to be the rds (step 19) for methanol synthe…

Molecular diffusion in aqueous methanol solutions: The combined influence of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic ends.

Although the nonmonotonic variation in the diffusion coefficients of alcohol and water with changing alcohol concentrations in aqueous solutions has been reported for many years, the underlying physical mechanisms remain unclear. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the molecular diffusion mechanisms in aqueous methanol solutions. Our findings reveal that the molecular diffusion is co-influenced by hydrogen bonding and the hydrophobic ends of methanol molecules. A stronger hydrogen bond (HB) network and a higher concentration of hydrophobic ends of methanol molecules both enha…

Highly Dispersed AuCu Nanoparticles Confined in Zr-MOFs for Efficient Methanol Synthesis from CO2 Hydrogenation.

Making use of novel materials to develop efficient catalysts is one of the research hotspots for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Herein, UiO-66, a typical Zr-MOF, was modified by ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) to serve as a substrate for the synthesis of AuCu bimetallic catalysts. The resultant AuCu@UiO-66-EDTA catalyst exhibited a superior methanol production rate, which delivered a high space-time yield of methanol (3.34 gMeOH gmetal-1 h-1) at 250 °C and 3.0 MPa. The EDTA modification was found to effectively confine AuCu nanoparticles inside the framework of MOFs, which significant…

Enhanced electro-catalysis for methanol oxidation reaction performance by edge defects of ordered mesoporous carbon.

Heteroatom-doped carbon materials are widely used to improve the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol; however, the underlying mechanisms driving this enhancement remain poorly understood. A major challenge lies in developing non-doped carbon supports with tunable intrinsic defect types tailored for metal-based catalysts. In this study, we synthesize a series of ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) supports with adjustable edge defect densities by varying roasting temperatures and employing a zinc (Zn) evaporation strategy to systematically investigate the impact of edge defects on methanol oxida…

Deciphering promotion of MoP over MoC in Pt catalysts for methanol-assisted water splitting reaction.

Molybdenum-based compounds show promising promotion effects on Pt catalysts for energy-relevant catalysis reactions. Herein, a more effective promotion effect of MoP than MoC was found in assisting Pt nanoparticles for methanol-assisted hydrogen generation in light of the strong metal-support interaction and synergistic effect between Pt and MoP/C nanospheres. Electrochemical analyses and theoretical calculations demonstrated that Pt-MoP/C facilitated the oxidation and removal of CO intermediates more effectively than Pt-MoC/C. This enhanced performance was attributed to the distinct 6-coordin…
