Green Synthesis of Tin Oxide (SnO2) Nanoparticles Using Ginger Extracts for Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes in Wastewater.

One of the main issues that has been receiving great attention globally is the pollution of water resources with dyes, as the chemicals present in them are carcinogenic and harmful to aquatic organisms and humans. Metal oxide nanoparticles synthesized using plant extracts have recently emerged as the best option to address this problem as they provide an eco-friendly and inexpensive approach for a clean water supply. This study describes the photocatalytic degradation of four different types of dyes-methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RB), Eriochrome black-T (EB), and methyl orange (MO) using ti

Dissolving Microneedles Containing Lactoferrin Nanosuspension for Enhancement of Antimicrobial and Anti-Inflammatory Effects in the Treatment of Dry Eye Disease.

Background/Objectives: Dry eye disease (DED), also known as "keratoconjunctivitis sicca", is a common chronic ocular surface disease accompanied by inflammation and diminished tear production. Bovine Lactoferrin (BLF), a multi-functional iron-binding glycoprotein found in tears, decreased significantly in patients with DED, used for the treatment of dry eye, conjunctivitis, and ocular inflammation. BLF has limited therapeutic efficacy due to poor ocular bioavailability. Methods: This study developed and optimized a BLF-loaded nanosuspension (BLF-NS) using the Box-Behnken Design (BBD). Optimize

Thiazolium salt mimics the non-coenzyme effects of vitamin B1 in rat synaptosomes.

Long-term studies have confirmed a causal relationship between the development of neurodegenerative processes and vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency. However, the biochemical mechanisms underlying the high neurotropic activity of thiamine are not fully understood. At the same time, there is increasing evidence that vitamin B1, in addition to its coenzyme functions, may have non-coenzyme activities that are particularly important for neurons. To elucidate which effects of vitamin B1 in neurons are due to its coenzyme function and which are due to its non-coenzyme activity, we conducted a comparat

Cobalt-induced neuro-behavioural alterations are accompanied by profound Purkinje cell and gut-associated responses in rats.

Metal ions including cobalt (Co) ions reportedly exhibit neurotoxic and antimicrobial properties. We hypothesized that oral exposure to Co may have implications for gut-dysbiosis with possible alterations of microbiota-gut-brain signaling in the host. In this preliminary study, we sought to examine whether exposure of male Wistar rats to cobalt chloride (CoCl2) at 0, 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg for two weeks affects select neurobehavioural indices, vagus nerve and brain morphology along with evaluation of associated changes in faecal bacterial flora, faecal fatty acids and the morphology of the intes

Non-target impacts of pesticides on soil N transformations, abundances of nitrifying and denitrifying genes, and nitrous oxide emissions.

Agriculture is the leading contributor to global nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, mostly from soils. We examined the non-target impacts of four pesticides on N transformations, N cycling genes and N2O emissions from sugarcane-cropped soil. The pesticides, including a herbicide glyphosate (GLY), an insecticide imidacloprid (IMI), a fungicide methoxy ethyl mercuric chloride (MEMC) and a fumigant methyl isothiocyanate (MITC), were added to the soil and incubated in laboratory at 25 °C. The soil microcosms were maintained at two water contents, 55 % and 90 % water holding capacity (WHC), to simulate

Gentiopicroside Produces Endothelium-Independent Vasodilation by Deactivating the PI3K/Akt/Rho-Kinase Pathway in Isolated Rat Thoracic Aorta.

Gentiopicroside (GPS), a main active secoiridoid glucoside derived from the roots of perennial herbs in the Gentianaceae family, has antispasmodic and relaxant effects. However, the vasorelaxant effects of GPS on aortic rings and the molecular mechanisms involved in these effects are not yet clear. Therefore, we investigated whether GPS inhibits phenylephrine- (PE-) or KCl-induced contractions in isolated rat thoracic aortic rings. The present study found that GPS produced a dose-dependent relaxation in aortic rings precontracted with PE or KCl and significantly reduced CaCl2-, narciclasine- (

Neurobehavioral and immune-toxic impairments induced by organic methyl mercury dietary exposure in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus.

Although substantial knowledge of mercury toxicity in fish has been assembled; until now, studies investigating the toxic impacts in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) following dietary exposure to organic methyl mercury (MeHg) are less prolific. Accordingly, the current study aimed to evaluate the impacts of MeHg on neurobehavioral and immune integrity in Nile tilapia after dietary exposure. Two hundred and twenty-five juvenile Nile tilapia (19.99 ± 0.33 g) were allocated into five groups in triplicates (15 fish/replicate). G1, G2, G3, G4, and G5. Dietary Nitrate Reduces Blood Pressure in Rats With Angiotensin II-Induced Hypertension via Mechanisms That Involve Reduction of Sympathetic Hyperactivity.

Several experimental and clinical studies have shown that dietary nitrate supplementation can increase nitric oxide bioavailability. In the oral cavity, commensal bacteria reduce nitrate to nitrite, which is subsequently absorbed into the circulation where reduction to nitric oxide by enzymatic systems occur. Although it is well-known that boosting the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide pathway can improve cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic functions and that sympathoexcitation contributes to the development of the same disorders, the potential effects of dietary nitrate on sympathetic activity re

Association of rat thoracic aorta dilatation by astragaloside IV with the generation of endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factors and nitric oxide, and the blockade of Ca2+ channels.

The aim of the present study was to elucidate the roles of endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factors (EDHFs) and nitric oxide (NO) in mediating the vasodilatation response to astragaloside IV and the effects of astragaloside IV on voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels and receptor-operated Ca2+ channels in rat thoracic aortic rings precontracted with potassium chloride (KCl; 60 mM) or phenylephrine (PHE; 1 µM). The results showed that astragaloside IV (1×10-4-3×10-1 g/l) concentration-dependently relaxed the contraction induced by KCl (10-90 mM) or PHE (1×10-9-3×10-5 µM) and inhibited concentratio

Effect of an Ilex paraguariensis (yerba mate) extract on infarct size in isolated rat hearts: the mechanisms involved.

Tea made from Ilex paraguariensis (IP) dried and minced leaves is a beverage widely consumed by large populations in South America as a source of caffeine (stimulant action) and for its medicinal properties. However, there is little information about the action of IP on the myocardium in the ischemia-reperfusion condition. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effects of an aqueous extract of IP on infarct size in a model of regional ischemia. Isolated rat hearts were perfused by the Langendorff technique and subjected to 40 min of coronary artery occlusion followed by 60 m

No independent, but an interactive, role of calcium-activated potassium channels in human cutaneous active vasodilation.

In human cutaneous microvasculature, endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factors (EDHFs) account for a large portion of vasodilation associated with local stimuli. Thus we sought to determine the role of EDHFs in active vasodilation (AVD) to passive heating in two protocols. Whole body heating was achieved using water-perfused suits (core temperature increase of 0.8-1.0°C), and skin blood flow was measured using laser-Doppler flowmetry. In the first protocol, four sites were perfused continuously via microdialysis with: 1) control; 2) tetraethylammonium (TEA) to block calcium-activated potassi

miRNA expression profiling in a human stem cell-based model as a tool for developmental neurotoxicity testing.

The main aim of this study was to evaluate whether microRNA (miRNA) profiling could be a useful tool for in vitro developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) testing. Therefore, to identify the possible DNT biomarkers among miRNAs, we have studied the changes in miRNA expressions in a mixed neuronal/glial culture derived from carcinoma pluripotent stem cells (NT2 cell line) after exposure to methyl mercury chloride (MeHgCl) during the process of neuronal differentiation (2-36 days in vitro (DIV1)). The neuronal differentiation triggered by exposure to retinoic acid (RA) was characterized in the control

The negative GABA(A) modulator methyl beta-carboline-3-carboxylate attenuates the behavioral effects of the positive GABA(A) modulators triazolam and pregnanolone in rhesus monkeys.

RATIONALE: Many of the effects of benzodiazepines (BZs), barbiturates, and neuroactive steroids are mediated by the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)(A) receptor complex. OBJECTIVES: This study tested the hypothesis that negative GABA(A) modulators attenuate the behavioral effects of different positive GABA(A) modulators that vary in their site of action on the receptor complex. METHODS: Rhesus monkeys responding under a multiple fixed ratio (FR:FR) schedule of food presentation and stimulus-shock termination received GABA(A) modulators under cumulative dosing procedures. RESULTS: The BZ site
