OBJECTIVE: To determine the bone mineral density curve in Turkish postmenopausal women and to evaluate the efficacy of estrogen replacement therapy in the prevention of bone loss.
METHOD: Spinal bone mineral density was measured using dual photon absorptiometry in 118 postmenopausal women, prospectively. Parity, previous and current use of estrogen preparations were correlated with BMD using Student's t-test and the chi 2-test.

Analysis of occupational morbidity for 1982-1989 in coal extraction industry workers in the Russian Federation showed its high-level detection in coal-miners. In June, 1989, an outbreak of nosocomial listeriosis occurred in Costa Rica. Listeria monocytogenes was isolated from 9 ill infants 4 to 8 days old who were born after the delivery of an infant with early onset listeriosis. Distraction osteogenesis by the Ilizarov method was performed on 20 dogs. Mineralization at the site of the left tibial metaphyseal lengthening was measured by weekly quantitative computer tomography (QCT) using the contralateral tibia as a control. We review a series of 11 silicotic coal miners demonstrating a progressive renal failure with a syndrome of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis. Renal biopsies reveal crescentic glomerulonephritides associated three times with angeitis. These cases confirm that silica induced glomerulonephritides can be an occupational hazard and warrant further clinical and epidemiological research.

A 39-year-old metal polishing mechanic had had an acute-on-chronic eczematous eruption on sun-exposed skin for 2 years. It improved in winter. He had been using an insoluble oil, CRT 20, as a cutting oil for 20 years. The cutting oil itself and mineral oil, which was one of its ingredients, showed positive reactions on photopatch testing. The difference action spectrum with or without mineral oil application, assessed at 48 h, ranged from 300 to 350 nm, with a peak at 320 nm. This is the 1st report of photoallergic contact dermatitis due to mineral oil.
