Association between muscle trauma and heterotopic ossification in spinal cord injured patients: reflections on their causal relationship and the diagnostic value of ultrasonography.

Paraplegic patients presenting with a subacute limitation of hip joint mobility were subjected to serial sonographic examinations. In four patients the initial sonographic study disclosed discontinuity with fluid collection in the psoas muscle, which was diagnostic of a traumatic muscle rupture. All four patients subsequently developed sonographic and radiographic evidence of heterotopic ossification. Our findings confirm that ultrasonography is an easy and inexpensive screening method for the early diagnosis of heterotopic ossification. The sonographic results obtained in these four paraplegi

Establishing global standards on wearable technology for measuring mobility in ageing populations: an international consensus exercise.

BACKGROUND: Mobility, defined as movement in all its forms, is a hallmark of healthy ageing. As wearable technologies become increasingly integrated into population health surveillance and ageing research, the absence of standardised terminology, measurement protocols and reporting practices presents a major barrier to progress. This consensus exercise aimed to establish minimum standards for measuring mobility with wearable technology in ageing populations and set priorities for future research in the field. METHODS: A two-day, in-person consensus meeting was convened with 24 international e

Does cognition affect supervised and unsupervised mobility differently in people with Parkinson's disease? A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The co-existence of cognitive and mobility impairments is frequent in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD). Cognitive functions are associated with different types of supervised mobility, but much less is known about unsupervised mobility. METHODS: Mild-to-moderate PwPD, without severe cognitive impairment and not using walking aids, performed three hospital-based supervised mobility tasks: forward walking, instrumented timed-up-and-go (iTUG) with a lower-back-mounted inertial sensor and a 3-meter backward walking test. Forward walking speed (FWS), backward walking speed (BWS) an

Impact of a nurse-led in-hospital mobility intervention on older adult patient functional outcomes and perceptions.

Hospital-associated disabilities in older adults are common. Few studies have used a performance measure to evaluate the impact of ambulation on patient functional status during and after discharge or investigated older adult perceptions of ambulation during a hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the implementation of MOVIN (Mobilizing Older adults Via a systems-based INtervention) on older adult functional performance outcomes and to understand patients perceptions of mobility during their hospital stay. A non-randomized observational study using a quasi-experimental des

Multimorbidity patterns influence mobility disability prevention in frail older adults from the SPRINTT trial.

Preserving independence in older adults is a public health priority. Lifestyle interventions can prevent physical disability, but whether their efficacy is influenced by multimorbidity profiles is unclear. In this post hoc analysis of the SPRINTT randomized trial ( NCT02582138 ), we investigated whether the efficacy of a multicomponent intervention (physical activity with technological support and nutritional counseling) differed across multimorbidity patterns. We included 1,199 community-dwelling adults aged ≥70 years with frailty, sarcopenia and two or more chronic conditions. Latent class a

Identification of micro-/nanoplastics in human placental blood using comprehensive multidimensional pyrolysis - gas chromatography x ion mobility mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Micro-/nanoplastics (MNPs) are ubiquitous environmental contaminants and there has been a growing concern about their potential adverse effects on human health. The present study reports on the development of a novel pyrolysis-gas chromatography x ion mobility mass spectrometry method to identify MNPs in placental blood, while reducing false positive detections from matrix interferences. RESULTS: Base digestion and filtration yielded acceptable recoveries: 90 ± 11 % for polystyrene (PS), 93 ± 16 % for polyethylene (PE), and 53 ± 18 % for polypropylene (PP). Limit of Detections (LO

The risk factors for development or progression of locomotive syndrome: a systematic review.

Locomotive syndrome is a decline in mobility and is believed to occur before the occurrence of frailty and sarcopenia; therefore, early detection of risk factors is important. However, systematic reviews have not been conducted. A systematic review of observational studies was performed to identify risk factors for the development or progression of locomotive syndrome. We searched the electronic databases of MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Ichushi Web (in Japanese), and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature. Studies that used the development or progression of locomotive syn

Predictors of physical activity in older adults early in an emergency hospital admission: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Reduced mobility may be responsible for functional decline and acute sarcopenia in older hospitalised patients. The drivers of reduced in-hospital mobility are poorly understood, especially during the early phase of acute hospitalisation. We investigated predictors of in-hospital activity during a 24-h period in the first 48 h of hospital admission in older adults. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective repeated measures cohort study. Participants aged 75 years or older were recruited within the first 24 h of admission. At recruitment, patients underwent a baselin

Aging Concerns, Challenges, and Everyday Solution Strategies (ACCESS) for adults aging with a long-term mobility disability.

BACKGROUND: There are growing numbers of adults aging with long-term mobility disabilities. Very little is known about the challenges this population experiences with everyday activities, and such challenges are likely to be greater and more complex than those of older adults who experience mobility declines later in life. OBJECTIVES: The current manuscript presents in-depth insights on the specific activity challenges experienced by older adults with long-term mobility disabilities, and the response strategies they employ to overcome those challenges. METHODS: In-depth, structured interview
