Evaluation and management of infantile apnea.

Knowledge regarding the etiology and optimal management of prolonged apnea and its relationship to SIDS is still limited. The majority of infants with prolonged apnea do not die of SIDS, although the risk of SIDS in this group is greater than in the general population. Many infants with prolonged apnea who are perceived by parents and physicians as having had a "life-threatening" event may be at risk for another. Appropriate assessment following this event includes a careful history and physical examination to determine cause and severity. Etiologies to be considered include infections, metabo

[Artificial pancreas: study methods and control of glycemia equilibrium in diabetic patients].

The artificial endocrine pancreas or artificial beta cell, consists of a continuous blood glucose monitoring system, a computered set-up which responds to glycemia and the hormone delivery system. This system provides a technique which can completely normalize blood glucose concentration in diabetic patients, during both food assumption and after. This paper deals with the characteristics of the artificial beta cell, its possible applications and its limits.

Accelerated idioventricular rhythm in patients without acute myocardial infarction.

Accelerated idioventricular rhythm (AIVR) has been reported in patients with acute myocardial infarction, digitalis excess, and subarachnoid hemorrhage, and in patients with rheumatic, primary myocardial, and hypertensive heart disease. Discovery of AIVR in 2 patients without heart disease led us to review reports from 700 Holter monitor studies. Seven patients without recent myocardial infarction were studied retrospectively. Three of the 7 had no evidence of heart disease; 5 of the 7 had abnormalities of the central nervous system. Examples of AIVR show approximation of the sinus rate and ec

Computer interpreted fetal electroencephalogram. I. Relative frequency of patterns.

Fetal electroencephalography (FEEG) is a clinical research technique for monitoring the electrical activity of the fetal brain during labor. Because of the massive volume of data, it has not previously been practicable to quantify the frequency of occurrence of the various patterns by visual analysis. With the use of a computer program, which has been shown to be consistent with visual interpretations, records for 11 fetuses, known to be neurologically normal at 1 year of age, were analyzed. Adequate FEEG had been recorded 73.6 per cent of the time during which the fetuses were monitored. In 1

Electrical impedance tomography-guided individualized ventilation strategy in patients with trauma-related and postoperative acute respiratory distress syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Optimal positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) selection in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is challenging because of marked regional lung heterogeneity. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) provides bedside assessment of regional ventilation and may support individualized ventilation by informing PEEP titration, but evidence in trauma- and postoperative-associated ARDS remains limited. METHODS: In this single-center randomized controlled trial, 86 adults with moderate-to-severe trauma- or postoperative-associated ARDS were randomized to an EIT-guided individualized ve

Therapeutic challenges in the management of gout in the elderly.

Gout is the most common inflammatory arthritis in the elderly population. Management in the elderly requires special consideration. Physiologic changes associated with aging and co-morbidities make the elderly prone to adverse effects of drugs otherwise successfully used in younger counterparts. Use of colchicine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and urate-lowering therapies may be restricted in those with limited renal reserve. Corticosteroids are safe alternatives for short-term use in acute gout. Elderly patients need laboratory monitoring for side effects more frequently than usual.

Initial trauma management in advanced pregnancy.

The principles enshrined in existing trauma resuscitation protocols for treating nonpregnant trauma victims should also be applied to the pregnant patient. In addition, left tilt of the pregnant patient (or the back board) and supplement oxygen are mandatory. The patient should be treated by a multidisciplinary team, preferably in a trauma center. Early intubation is recommended, but should be performed, where possible, by an experienced physician. The physician should be aware of the different physiologic and laboratory values in normal pregnancy. Fetal monitoring is important to assess both

Continuous monitoring of the microcirculation in neurocritical care: an update on brain tissue oxygenation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article summarizes recent clinical and experimental studies of parenchymal brain tissue oxygen monitoring and considers future directions for its use in neurocritical care. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent reports have focused on the relationship between brain tissue oxygen tension (PbrO2) and other physiologic parameters such as mean arterial pressure, cerebral perfusion pressure, cerebral blood flow, and fraction of inspired oxygen. PbrO2 appears to reflect both regional and systemic oxygen concentrations as well as microvascular perfusion through natural tissue gradients. De

Multiplexed and implantable fiber sensor for real-time blood monitoring.

Accurate and real-time monitoring of blood electrolyte composition, particularly sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+), is crucial for guiding intraoperative and postoperative decisions, as these ions regulate critical bodily functions such as cardiac rhythm and fluid balance. Current blood analysis relies on ex vivo blood sampling, which introduces substantial time delays and can be susceptible to inaccuracies caused by temperature fluctuations. To address these challenges, we report here a multiplexed and implantable fiber sensor (MIFS) capable of monitoring Na+ and K+ ions in real time directly i

Wearable Technologies for Remote Neurologic Health Monitoring.

Wearable sensing offers the opportunity to create 21st-century approaches to assessing neurologic function in multiple environments and to augment the examination from the 19th century. Commonly used sensors in neurology include accelerometers, gyroscopes, surface electromyogram, mobile electroencephalogram, electrodermal sensors, and photoplethysmography. These are applied in various form factors to capture physical activity, upper or lower extremity movement, changes in skin conductance, and changes in blood volumes. For sleep monitoring, many types of sensors have been used, but electroence

Flexible pressure sensor with ordered three-level pyramid microstructures for high-sensitivity and wide-range human body perception applications.

Flexible piezoresistive sensors are extensively applied in human physiological monitoring and dexterous hand motion detection. However, they often suffer from a trade-off between high sensitivity and wide sensing range, as well as limited linearity induced by the intrinsic microstructural drawbacks. In this study, we propose a flexible piezoresistive sensor featuring a well-ordered and three-level pyramidal microstructure (OTPm) fabricated by laser direct writing and wet etching to overcome such limitations. Benefiting from stress concentration at pyramid tips and stepwise interfacial contact,

Smartphone Acoustic Sensing for Contactless Respiration Monitoring and Gesture-Based Authentication.

This paper presents a smartphone-based sonar-sensing system for contactless monitoring of respiration and gesture-based user activity, using a single commercial phone with no hardware modification. A 20 kHz audio signal is transmitted from the phone's speaker and reflections are captured by its microphone; motion-induced Doppler shifts are recovered using an envelope detection method that removes the need for a reference copy of the transmitted signal and improves robustness to transmitter frequency drift. Actuator experiments at a target distance around 50 cm demonstrated motion sensitivity a

Radar-Based Monitoring for Non-Contact Detection of Nocturnal Hypoglycemia in Diabetes: A Review.

Radar technology has emerged as a promising tool for contactless monitoring of sleep physiology and related disorders. Nocturnal hypoglycemia is a critical safety concern in people with diabetes, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, older adults, and individuals in long-term care, where body-worn devices are often not used. To assess the feasibility of radar-based hypoglycemia detection, we conducted a scoping review of studies published between January 2007 and July 2025 that investigated radar monitoring of physiological parameters during sleep or sleep-related disorders

Non-Invasive Physiological Metrics for Cognitive Load Assessment in Training and Operational Contexts: Signal Processing, Evidence, and Feasibility.

Cognitive load is a key determinant of performance, safety, and learning in high-stakes environments. Self-report and performance-based methods remain valuable but often miss rapid within-task changes in mental demand, motivating non-invasive physiological sensing for continuous monitoring. The interpretability of these signals depends on their specificity, acquisition quality, signal processing requirements, and real-world feasibility. Integrating physiological mechanism, measurement performance, and operational feasibility, this article reviews non-invasive physiological metrics, including c
