Intra-fraction target motion during MR-guided prostate stereotactic body radiotherapy: the importance of adaptive planning and real-time motion management.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the extent of prostate displacement during SBRT on an MRI Linac using comprehensive motion management (CMM) and identified variables associated with intrafraction motion (IFM). METHODS: 212 patients with clinically localized prostate cancer were treated with 5-fraction SBRT on a 1.5 T MR-Linac where IFM was continuously tracked and gated by CMM. Pre-beam positional shifts were identified from MRI registration prior to beam delivery. Intrafraction positional variability during beam delivery was evaluated, and multivariable analysis identified variables associated …

Global motion perception is independent from contrast sensitivity for coherent motion direction discrimination and visual acuity in 4.5-year-old children.

Global motion processing depends on a network of brain regions that includes extrastriate area V5 in the dorsal visual stream. For this reason, psychophysical measures of global motion perception have been used to provide a behavioral measure of dorsal stream function. This approach assumes that global motion is relatively independent of visual functions that arise earlier in the visual processing hierarchy such as contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. We tested this assumption by assessing the relationships between global motion perception, contrast sensitivity for coherent motion direction…

Selective transfer of perceptual learning in parafoveal second-order motion: generalization to first-order motion but not to static second-order stimuli.

Perceptual learning of motion provides a powerful tool for investigating the hierarchical organization of the visual system. Previous studies have shown that training on second-order (contrast-defined) motion transfers asymmetrically to first-order (luminance-defined) motion, but the locus of this learning effect remains unclear. Here we tested whether second-order motion training transfers to static second-order perception, a condition that shares early texture-defined features but lacks motion components. Twenty-four subjects were assigned to a training group (n = 16) or a control group (n =…

Validation of the motion sickness severity scale: Secondary analysis of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of a treatment for motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is characterized by nausea and vomiting among a constellation of symptoms. Symptom severity is dynamic and distressing. Most validated motion sickness scales are time-intensive and effortful, with alternative scales having uncertain performance or non-specific measures. A validated instrument allowing for facile, rapid assessment of core motion sickness symptom severity would therefore be valuable. We assessed the performance of the Motion Sickness Severity Scale (MSSS), a six-item questionnaire designed to measure real-time motion sickness symptoms. METHODS: MSSS …

Temporal Dynamics of Visually Induced Motion Perception and Neural Evidence of Alterations in the Motion Perception Process in an Immersive Virtual Reality Environment.

Even though reciprocal inhibitory vestibular interactions following visual stimulation have been understood as sensory-reweighting mechanisms to stabilize motion perception; this hypothesis has not been thoroughly investigated with temporal dynamic measurements. Recently, virtual reality technology has been implemented in different medical domains. However, exposure in virtual reality environments can cause discomfort, including nausea or headache, due to visual-vestibular conflicts. We speculated that self-motion perception could be altered by accelerative visual motion stimulation in the vir…

Between-session reliability of opto-electronic motion capture in measuring sagittal posture and 3-D ranges of motion of the thoracolumbar spine.

This study evaluated between-session reliability of opto-electronic motion capture to measure trunk posture and three-dimensional ranges of motion (ROM). Nineteen healthy participants aged 24-74 years underwent spine curvature, pelvic tilt and trunk ROM measurements on two separate occasions. Rigid four-marker clusters were attached to the skin overlying seven spinous processes, plus single markers on pelvis landmarks. Rigid body rotations of spine marker clusters were calculated to determine neutral posture and ROM in flexion, extension, total lateral bending (left-right) and total axial rota…

Evaluation of sit-to-stand motion using a pressure distribution measurement system--effect of differences in seat hardness on sit-to-stand motion.

PURPOSE: This study examined differences between standing from an ordinary seat and standing from a low-repulsion mat using a pressure distribution measurement system (BIG-MAT) and identified parameters to determine sit-to-stand (STS) motion difficulty. METHOD: Ten healthy male volunteers (aged 30-38 years) participated. During STS motion from an ordinary seat and from a low-repulsion urethane mat, plantar surface pressure changes of both feet and the centre of pressure (COP) trajectory were recorded for 7  s. This series of tests was performed four times in each subject. Left and right press…

Motion sickness during off-vertical axis rotation: prediction by a model of sensory interactions and correlation with other forms of motion sickness.

Motion sickness (MS) susceptibility of 108 normal subjects was measured during off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) as a function of angular velocity (60-180 degrees/s). The chair rotated about a longitudinal axis tilted 30 degrees with respect to gravity. For each velocity, we measured the duration of exposure necessary to evoke a moderate malaise, with a limit of 30 min. MS appeared the fastest at a rotation velocity of 105 degrees/s; higher or lower velocities were less provocative. These results are in good agreement with predictions made by Zupan et al. [in ICANN'94, Springer-Verlag, 1995] b…

Application of long-interval paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation to motion-sensitive visual cortex does not lead to changes in motion discrimination.

The perception of visual motion is dependent on a set of occipitotemporal regions that are readily accessible to neuromodulation. The current study tested if paired-pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (ppTMS) could modulate motion perception by stimulating the occipital cortex as participants viewed near-threshold motion dot stimuli. In this sham-controlled study, fifteen subjects completed two sessions. On the first visit, resting motor threshold (RMT) was assessed, and participants performed an adaptive direction discrimination task to determine individual motion sensitivity. During the …

Exploring variations in gait patterns and joint motion characteristics in school-aged children across different walking speeds: a comprehensive motion analysis study.

This study aimed to investigate differences in gait patterns among individuals with different walking speeds and identify the range of motion (ROM) and angular velocity for various joints during gait. Forty-five schoolchildren were randomly selected for this study. To capture their walking patterns, two FDR-AX700 4K HDR camcorders were positioned to observe the predetermined walkway. Each participant completed a 5-meter walk at various speeds, including slow, normal, and fast, while maintaining a straight stride. There were significantly higher ROM and angular velocity (p<0.05) at the hip, kne…

Could Vulnerability to Motion Sickness and Chronic Pain Coexist within a Sensorimotor Phenotype? Insights from over 500 Pre-Pain Motion Sickness Reports.

BACKGROUND: The sensorimotor incongruence theory proposes that certain instances of pain result from conflicts in the brain's sensorimotor networks. Indeed, injuries may cause abnormalities in afferent and cortical signaling resulting in such conflicts. Motion sickness also occurs in instances of incongruent sensorimotor data. It is possible that a sensory processing phenotype exists that predisposes people to both conditions. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate whether participants with chronic pain recall greater susceptibility to motion sickness before chronic pain onset. METHOD…

Photosensitizers in Motion: Micro- and Nanomotor-Assisted Photodynamic Therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a clinically relevant and minimally invasive strategy for treating diseases associated with uncontrolled tissue growth, including nonmelanoma skin cancers and microbial infections. Its spatiotemporal selectivity minimizes damage to healthy tissues and limits the emergence of therapeutic resistance, while its versatility enables integration with complementary therapeutic approaches. One emerging direction is the combination of PDT with artificial self-propelled micro- and nanomotors (MNMs). Active MNM motion enhances photosensitizer (PS) transport and localization,…

Assisted exploration of difficult transitions in humanoid motion tracking.

Humanoid motion tracking provides a scalable interface for transferring kinematic human motion to whole-body robot control, but highly dynamic and contact-rich references remain difficult because underactuation and discontinuous contacts can restrict the closed-loop state distributions explored during training. External wrenches can reduce dynamic mismatch during imitation, but retaining such assistance in the final controller can compromise physical realism. This paper proposes residual-wrench-assisted reinforcement learning (RWARL), a two-stage framework that uses base residual wrenches as a…

Decoding self-motion: insights into visual-vestibular causal inference.

Self-motion perception relies on the integration of visual optic flow and vestibular signals, yet these cues are often noisy, unreliable, or mutually inconsistent. A central challenge is therefore not only how to integrate them, but also whether they should be integrated at all. Bayesian causal inference provides a framework for this problem by proposing that the brain infers whether visual and vestibular cues arise from a common cause and adjusts their integration accordingly. Behavioral findings, including disparity-dependent perceptual biases, reliability-dependent cue reweighting, and expe…

Using Motion-Tracking to Objectively Assess Skill in Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Surgical assessment often relies on subjective expert observation, which may introduce bias. We aimed to objectively differentiate skill levels in a complex simulated operative procedure using hand-tracking metrics through a wearable mixed reality headset. METHODS: A validated paediatric open inguinal herniotomy simulator was used to simulate a surgical task composed of multiple sequential operative steps. Novices (medical students) and experts (paediatric surgeons) were recruited. After completing a pre-task questionnaire, participants performed the task while wearing the mixed r
