Mechanisms of induction of the antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic adaptive repair response of cells to the effect of alkylating substances and other genotoxic agents are discussed. The possibility of induction of adaptive repair response of mammalian cells to low-level radiation is suggested.

A retroviral shuttle vector was constructed by introducing the Escherichia coli xanthine (guanine) phosphoribosyltransferase gene (gpt) into the pZip-NeoSV(X)1 vector [Cepko, C. L., Roberts, B. Seventeen tannins used in the hide and leather industry, most of which contain mainly Cr(III) sulphates, were tested for the ability to directly induce gene mutations in Salmonella typhimurium (TA 100 strain) and chromosomal effects (sister chromatid exchanges, SCE) in cultured hamster cells (CHO line). We have developed a cytogenetic technique that allows observation of chromosome rearrangements associated with TK-/- mutagenesis of the L5178Y/TK+/-3.7.2C cell line early in mutant clonal history.
