A role for gut microbiota in early-life stress-induced widespread muscle pain in the adult rat.

Adult rats that experienced neonatal limited bedding (NLB), a form of early-life stress, experience persistent muscle mechanical hyperalgesia. Since there is a growing recognition that the gut microbiome regulates pain and nociception, and that early-life stress produces a long-lasting impact on the gut microbiome, we tested the hypothesis that persistent muscle hyperalgesia seen in adult NLB rats could be ameliorated by interventions that modify the gut microbiome. Adult NLB rats received probiotics, either Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (10 billion CFU/150 ml) or De Simone Formulation (DSF) (112

Thresholds, Firing Rates, and Order of Recruitment of Anterior Temporalis Muscle Single-Motor Units During Experimental Masseter Muscle Pain.

AIMS: To test the hypothesis that, in comparison with control, experimental noxious stimulation of the right masseter muscle would result in significant changes in the firing rates, thresholds, and recruitment orders of single-motor units (SMUs) of the nonpainful, synergistic right anterior temporalis muscle during goal-directed isometric biting task performance. METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers received an infusion of hypertonic saline (HS; 5% sodium chloride) into the right masseter to produce pain intensity of 40 to 60 on a 100-mm visual analog scale (VAS). Isotonic saline (IS) infusion

Association between waking-state oral behaviours, according to the oral behaviors checklist, and TMD subgroups.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between waking-state oral behaviours and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) subgroups and to develop new scoring methods for the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC). METHODS: Patients with any TMD diagnosis, according to the diagnostic criteria for TMD (DC/TMD), were divided into subgroups: 'Dysfunctional-TMD' (n = 70), only mechanical dysfunction; 'Painful-TMD' (n = 204), only myalgia, arthralgia or both; and 'Painful-Dysfunctional TMD' (n = 95), combined pain and dysfunction. A group of individuals without TMD, 'Non-TMD' (n = 374), was used for testing associat…

Impact of Nutrition-Based Interventions on Athletic Performance during Menstrual Cycle Phases: A Review.

Despite the steady increase in female participation in sport over the last two decades, comprehensive research on interventions attenuating the influence of female menstrual physiology on performance remains scarce. Studies involving eumenorrheic women often only test in one menstrual phase to limit sex hormone variance, which may restrict the application of these findings to the rest of the menstrual cycle. The impacts of nutrition-based interventions on athletic performance throughout the menstrual cycle have not been fully elucidated. We addressed this gap by conducting a focused critical r

Contralateral protective effect against repeated bout of damaging exercise: A meta-analysis.

The purpose was to summarize the studies examining the contralateral protective effect on the maximal strength in the subsequent bout of muscle-damaging exercise. The literature search was conducted through CINAHL plus, SportDiscus, and PubMed. Hedge's g effect size (ES) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were computed using a random effects model. From 14 papers and 25 ESs, the mean ES for contralateral repeated bout effect (CL-RBE) on 1-, 2-, and 3-day post maximal strength were -0.61 (95% CI = -0.80, -0.41), -0.50 (95% CI = -0.67, -0.33), and -0.74 (95% CI = -1.01, -0.48), respectively. Quantitative sensory testing in patients with the muscle pain subtype of temporomandibular disorder: a systemic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate quantitative sensory testing (QST) evidence for pain processing in patients with the muscle pain subtype of temporomandibular disorders (mTMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive systematic electronic search strategy was performed in online literature databases. All full-text observational studies published up to July 2021 with the aim of investigating pain sensitization in humans with mTMD using QST measures were eligible for inclusion. Meta-analysis of QST data was performed using a random effects model, which included results comparing p

[Haff disease - are we threatened with another epidemic?].

Haff disease is a group of symptoms caused by rhabdomyolysis following ingestion of some species of fish and crayfish. Pathophysiology remains unknown. Outbreaks of the Haff disease have been reported in many regions of the world. In this article we present the case of a 38-years-old patient, professional fisherman, suspected of suffering from Haff disease. He developed symptoms of diffuse myalgia, headache, chest pressure, brown-colored urine and elevated blood pressure. Predominant laboratory abnormalities were elevated serum creatine kinase and creatinine concentrations. During hospitalizat…

Insight into pain syndromes in acute phase of mild-to-moderate COVID-19: Frequency, clinical characteristics, and associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Pain has been frequently described as a clinical feature of COVID-19, and the main pain syndromes that have been associated with the acute phase of this disease so far are headache, myalgia, arthralgia, and neuropathic pain. Understanding the characteristics of pain symptoms is crucial for a better clinical approach. METHODS: Patients who were diagnosed as having COVID-19 using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were included in the study. Patients were asked to complete a 51-item questionnaire via a phone interview, which included questions on demographics, acute COV…

Description of acute and chronic load, training monotony and strain over a season and its relationships with well-being status: A study in elite under-16 soccer players.

This study described the weekly variations of acute (wAL), chronic (wCL), acute:chronic workload ratio (wACWR), training monotony (wTM), and training strain (wTS) of perceived load, such as wellness indicators over a competitive season. In addition, we analyzed the associations between training load metrics and weekly reports. Twenty-nine under 16 years old elite players were daily monitored for 20 consecutive weeks during the season by individual observations. Training and match load were obtained using the session rating of perceived exertion. Well-being status relative to stress, fatigue, d

The effect of post-match resistance training on recovery in female footballers; when is best to train?

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effects of resistance training (RT) performed at 24 or 48h post-match on recovery in female soccer players. METHODS: In a randomized cross-over design, 10 professional female soccer players undertook matches followed by three conditions: Control (no RT), RT-24h and RT-48h post-match. RT was a high-speed and low-load session, consisting of 3 sets of 6 repetitions of lower-body exercises at 50%1RM. During training, one exercise (half-squat) was performed on a force platform to determine mean and peak forces. Tests were undertaken pre, 24, 48 and 72h post-match

Reorganization of Masseter and Temporalis Muscle Single Motor Unit Activity During Experimental Masseter Muscle Pain.

AIMS: To test the hypothesis that experimental noxious stimulation of the right masseter muscle results in a reorganization of motor unit activity within the right temporalis and right masseter muscles during jaw closing tasks. METHODS: A total of 20 healthy participants received hypertonic saline (5% sodium chloride) infusion into the right masseter muscle, and pain intensity was maintained at 40-60/100 mm on a visual analog scale. Standardized isometric biting tasks were performed with an intraoral force transducer while single motor units (SMUs) were recorded from the right masseter and te

Advances in Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) - Part II: Treatment and Prevention.

Delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) describes an entity of ultrastructural muscle damage. The manifestation of DOMS is caused by eccentric muscle contractions or unaccustomed forms of exercise. Clinical signs include impaired muscular force capacities, painful restriction of movement, stiffness, swelling, and altered biomechanics in adjacent joints. Although DOMS is categorised as a mild type of muscle damage, it is one of the most common reasons for compromised sportive performance. In the last decade, many hypotheses have been developed to explain the aetiology of DOMS, and there are a wide

A 3-year study of patients with tinnitus and jaw muscle tenderness.

Objective: This study evaluated three-year results of treatment with an interocclusal appliance in 89 tinnitus patients with jaw muscle tenderness. Methods: Subjective tinnitus severity was recorded using a visual analog scale (VAS). The number of tender muscles was registered. The patients were followed annually. After three years, 64 patients were examined (72%). Results: Tinnitus severity at baseline was high (mean VAS value 68.3). After one year, the VAS values were substantially lower (mean 37.4; p < 0.001). During the following two years, there were no significant changes in VAS values.

Macro-creatine kinase: a neglected cause of elevated creatine kinase.

Macro-creatine kinase (macro-CK) is a neglected cause of raised CK. Over a 10-year period, we observed five cases. Three patients had macro-CK type 1. One patient with fibromyalgia underwent several explorations to find a muscular pathology; another, who had elevated CK-MB (muscle-brain fraction) activity, was referred to a cardiologist, and statin therapy was erroneously discontinued in two patients. Two patients had macro-CK type 2: a man with a neuroendocrine carcinoma and a woman with rheumatoid arthritis. Diagnosis of type 1 obviates the need to carry out pointless and expensive investiga…
