BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) represent a heterogeneous group of pathogens with increasing global prevalence and significant geographical variation in species distribution. NTM infections, often affecting immunocompromised individuals, are difficult to diagnose due to nonspecific clinical presentations and laboratory findings. This case study presents a rare extrapulmonary NTM infection in a 73-year-old man, initially misdiagnosed as sarcoidosis, highlighting the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges posed by such infections.

Infections due to Mycobacterium shigaense, a slow-growing mycobacterium of the Mycobacterium simiae complex, are rarely reported. We describe a case of M. shigaense infection in a 68-year-old woman with diabetes and found that its infections are often associated with immunocompromised conditions or underlying pulmonary diseases in East Asia.

Mycobacterium has presented public health challenges since its inception, primarily affecting developing nations. Much less is known about M. bovis, a member of the mycobacterium family more frequently affecting zoonotic species. Infections postaortic aneurysm repair are rare, and few cases have reported infection secondary to the lesser-known mycobacterium member, M. bovis. Here, we present a case of aortic graft infection status-post aortic aneurysm repair secondary to M. bovis. We highlight the essential role multi-modal radiographic imaging played in establishing this diagnosis.

We found Mycobacterium leprae, the most common etiologic agent of Hansen disease or leprosy, in tissues from 9 (18.75%) of 48 nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) collected across continental Ecuador. Finding evidence of a wildlife reservoir is the first step to recognizing leprosy zoonotic transmission pathway in Ecuador or elsewhere.

We present a case of generalized sarcoidal dermatitis in a patient with tuberculoid leprosy. Previous investigations demonstrated three taxonomic groups among 22 clinical isolates of Mycobacterium smegmatis.
