Comparison of whole body diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy for oncogenic osteomalacia.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of whole body diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (WB-DWI) with that of somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) in the detection and localization of the lesions in patients with oncogenic osteomalacia (OOM). METHODS: Totally 6 patients with clinically suspected oncogenic osteomalacia were enrolled. All of them underwent WB-DWI and SRS within 2 weeks to evaluate the possible presence of tumors that lead to osteomalacia. Surgical and pathological findings were considered as the gold standard. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were calculate

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: an update of therapeutic management.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign tumor of the nasopharynx composed of fibrous connective tissue and an abundance of endothelium-lined vascular spaces. The name of the disease is derived from the fact that it occurs during adolescence, almost exclusively in boys. METHODS: This study examines the natural characteristics of JNA, the imaging techniques used to diagnose and stage the neoplasm, and the treatment approaches used to manage the disease. RESULTS: Forty-three cases of JNA diagnosed and treated at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center ove

Usefulness of Artificial Intelligence for Surgical Support in Robot-assisted Distal Pancreatectomy: A Preliminary Case Report.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The incidence of postoperative complications in minimally-invasive surgery for pancreatic disease remains a concern. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in surgery has been reported to improve the precision of anatomical identification, potentially improving the rate of postoperative complications. In this report, the utility of organ recognition support provided by surgical AI during robot-assisted distal pancreatectomy for a patient with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (NET) is described. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer

Multinodular Hydropic Leiomyoma in a 41-Year-Old Patient: A Case Report.

Uterine leiomyomas are a heterogenous group of benign mesenchymal tumours. While diagnosis is usually achieved through clinical assessment and pelvic ultrasound (PU), atypical subtypes are not as easily recognisable and can be mistaken for malignant tumours such as leiomyosarcoma or ovarian carcinoma. We describe the case of a 41-year-old patient who presented with increasing bulk symptoms, urinary frequency and growth of a hydropic leiomyoma (HLM) of the left lateral and posterior uterine wall that had been known for 10 years, confirmed with previous biopsy. The tumour filled the entire pelvi

Loss of p16/Ink4a drives high frequency of rhabdomyosarcoma in a rat model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is an aggressive type of soft tissue sarcoma, and pleomorphic RMS is a rare subtype of RMS found in adult. p16 is a tumor suppressor which inhibits cell cycle. In human RMS, p16 gene is frequently deleted, but p16-null mice do not develop RMS. We reported that genetic ablation of p16 by the crossbreeding of p16 knock-out rats (p16-KO rats) improved the dystrophic phenotype of a rat model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Dmd-KO rats). However, p16/Dmd double knock-out rats (dKO rats) unexpectedly developed sarcoma. In the present study, we raised p16-KO, Dmd-KO, and dKO ra

Hypertrophic osteopathy associated with a renal adenoma in a cat.

Hypertrophic osteopathy is a hyperostotic syndrome of the appendicular skeleton that is most commonly associated with intrathoracic neoplasia or inflammation. The condition is rarely associated with intra-abdominal lesions. The majority of cases have occurred in dogs and human beings, with fewer cases reported in cats, horses, and other species. A 15-year-old male neutered Domestic Shorthair cat presented for swollen limbs and difficulty in ambulation. Radiographs and gross postmortem revealed severe periosteal hyperostosis of the diaphysis and metaphysis of all 4 limbs, including the humerus,

Osteosarcoma in a Marfan patient with a novel premature termination codon in the FBN1 gene.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that is presumed to arise from osteoblasts. Considered a rare tumor, approximately 1000 cases of osteosarcoma are diagnosed in the United States each year, and osteosarcoma of the foot is rarer still. Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a rare genetic disorder that affects 1 in 5000 individuals and is caused by mutations in the fibrillin 1 (FBN1) gene. MFS phenotype affects several body systems, including soft connective tissue and bone. Here we report, for the first time, an individual with MFS that was treated for osteosarcoma. Surgically resec

Ectopic Thyroid Nodule Hyperplasia: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND We present a rare case of an ectopic thyroid nodule hyperplasia, confirmed postoperatively after excision and histopathological examination of a chronic cervical mass. We discuss the different clinical and therapeutic features of this rare thyroid dysgenesis caused by a defect of migration of the gland along its normal way of descent. CASE REPORT A 48-year-old man with a history of hypertension and asthma presented with dysphagia and a progressively growing firm mass at the anterior part of his neck over the past 6 months. Ultrasound and computed tomography suggested that the mass w

The oncofetal domain of fibronectin defined by monoclonal antibody FDC-6: its presence in fibronectins from fetal and tumor tissues and its absence in those from normal adult tissues and plasma.

An IgG1 monoclonal antibody, FDC-6, was established, which defines a unique fibronectin (FN) domain, located between the "Hep-2" and the "Fib-2" domains, in the COOH-terminal region of FNs isolated from hepatoma, sarcoma, and fetal fibroblasts. A systematic study with this antibody indicates the presence of two classes of human FNs. (i) FN from fetal connective tissue, placenta, amniotic fluid, hepatoma, and colon carcinoma as well as cell lines from fetal tissues (WI-38), hepatomas (HuH-6 and HuH-7), and sarcoma (VA13) was characterized by the presence of the FDC-6-defined domain and by a hig

Miscellaneous rare paratesticular tumors.

A few uncommon but distinctive tumors may preferentially involve the paratestis. The 3 unusual tumors that represent the focus of this discussion are the ovarian-type epithelial tumors (OTET), the desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT), and the melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI). The OTETs are testicular homologues of their more common namesake counterparts that arise in the ovary. Most frequent of these are serous tumors of borderline malignancy, with fewer cases of serous carcinomas or other forms of mullerian differentiation. DSRCT is an increasingly recognized, aggressi

Skin cancer risk in autoimmune connective tissue diseases.

Cutaneous malignancies have been significantly associated with autoimmune connective tissue diseases (ACTDs). This review focuses on the current state of knowledge on skin cancer risk in the most prevalent ACTDs in dermatology including lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis and Sjögren syndrome. Potential pathogenetic mechanisms for the association between ACTDs and malignancy involve disease-related impairment of immune system, sustained cutaneous inflammation, drug-associated immune suppression and increased susceptibility to acquired viral infections. An additional causal role m

Incidental prostatic stromal tumor of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP): histopathological and immunohistochemical findings.

Stromal prostate tumors are rare neoplastic proliferative lesions that have been classified into prostatic stromal tumor of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) and prostatic stromal sarcoma (SS) based on these criteria: stromal cellularity, presence of mitotic figures, necrosis, and stromal overgrowth. A prostatic stromal tumor of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) is a non-epithelial, mesenchymal spindle-cell tumor that can be classified as a specialized stromal tumor of the prostate. STUMPs have the capability to diffusely infiltrate the prostate gland and extend into adjacent tissues.

Investigating the Safety of Breast Reconstruction With the Deep Inferior Epigastric Flap in Patients With Connective Tissue Diseases.

BACKGROUND: Connective tissue diseases (CTDs) are associated with impaired wound healing and hypercoagulability. There is currently a paucity of research examining postoperative outcomes in these patients following microsurgical procedures. We aimed to analyze postoperative outcomes in patients with CTDs following breast reconstruction with the deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective study was conducted consisting of all patients that underwent breast reconstruction with DIEP flaps between 2015 and 2023. Outcomes were assessed in the 90-day

Pathogenic Somatic Mutation of DICER1 and Clinicopathological Features in Nasal Chondromesenchymal Hamartomas: A Series of Nine Cases.

Nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma (NCMH) is a rare benign polypoid mesenchymal tumor arising in the nasal cavity and/or paranasal sinuses. Recognizing these sporadic, rare lesions is crucial, as surgical complete removal of the mass is the common treatment approach. This retrospective study analyzed the demographics, symptoms, and imaging data of 9 patients diagnosed with NCMH between January 2017 and June 2023, possibly representing the largest single-center adult case cohort to date. Diagnostic techniques included nasal endoscopy, CT/MRI scan, immunohistological studies, and morphologic com

MAPLE-PD trial (Mesenteric Approach vs. Conventional Approach for Pancreatic Cancer during Pancreaticoduodenectomy): study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial of 354 patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The mesenteric approach is an artery-first approach to pancreaticoduodenectomy for pancreatic cancer, which starts with the dissection of connective tissues around the superior mesenteric artery. The procedure aims for early confirmation of resectability by checking the surgical margin around the superior mesenteric artery first during the operation. It also aims to decrease intraoperative blood loss by early ligation of the inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery and to increase R0 rate by complete clearance of the lymph nodes around the superior mesenteric artery and pancreatic head

GATA3: a multispecific but potentially useful marker in surgical pathology: a systematic analysis of 2500 epithelial and nonepithelial tumors.

GATA3 is a transcription factor important in the differentiation of breast epithelia, urothelia, and subsets of T lymphocytes. It has been suggested to be useful in the evaluation of carcinomas of mammary or urothelial origin or metastatic carcinomas, but its distribution in normal and neoplastic tissues is incompletely mapped. In this study, we examined normal developing and adult tissues and 2040 epithelial and 460 mesenchymal or neuroectodermal neoplasms for GATA3 expression to explore its diagnostic value in surgical pathology, using monoclonal antibody (clone L50-823) and Leica Bond autom

Insufficiency fracture associated with oncogenic osteomalacia.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome of systemic bone demineralization secondary to a tumor-induced dysregulation of phosphorus metabolism. The tumor's low prevalence, small size, and variable location often result in years of muscular weakness and bone pain before diagnosis. With complete treatment, patient's symptoms swiftly dissipate. We report the case of a 63-year-old previously healthy man with a 20-month course of musculoskeletal symptoms before diagnosis and resection of a posterior tibial tumor. Postoperatively, the patient had returned to his previous lifestyle wh
