Nerve regeneration inside fresh skeletal muscle-enriched synthetic tubes: a laser confocal microscope study in the rat sciatic nerve model.

The search for good conduits for bridging nerve defects is a major challenge of today's tissue engineering research. In this paper we report on a laser confocal microscope study on early nerve regeneration inside a tissue engineered graft made by a poly(DLLA-epsilon-CL) conduit enriched with fresh skeletal muscle. The same biodegradable tubes filled with PBS solution were used as controls. The conduits were placed to bridge unilateral 1-cm-long rat sciatic nerve defects and analysed 10 days after surgery. Results showed that inside the muscle-enriched tubes axon regeneration, labelled by means

Radiologic imaging of the carpal tunnel.

Compression neuropathy of the median nerve (carpal tunnel syndrome) is the most common nerve compression syndrome of the extremities. Although the disease is usually diagnosed on the basis of clinical examination and nerve conduction studies, radiologic imaging plays an important role in equivocal cases and especially in the assessment of recurrent or unrelieved symptoms after surgical carpal tunnel release. While plain radiographs and computed tomography are of limited diagnostic value except for the evaluation of osseous carpal stenosis and soft tissue calcifications, high-resolution sonogra

Anti-inflammatory mechanisms underlying sympathetic nervous system-mediated acupuncture analgesia.

Sympathetic nerves play an important role in the generation and maintenance of pain, and many studies have shown that inflammatory factors play an important role in this process. During tissue inflammation or injury, the interaction between sympathetic nerves and the sensory nervous system may lead to the aggravation of pain. Inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β play a key role in soft tissue injury and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and thus affect the perception and regulation of pain through sympathetic nerve pathways. The efficac

Autonomic innervation of the human cardiac conduction system: changes from infancy to senility--an immunohistochemical and histochemical analysis.

In order to study the changes in the pattern of autonomic innervation of the human cardiac conduction system in relation to age, the innervation of the conduction system of 24 human hearts (the age of the individuals ranged from newborn to 80 years), freshly obtained at autopsy, was evaluated by a combination of immunofluorescence and histochemical techniques. The pattern of distribution and density of nerves exhibiting immunoreactivity against protein gene product 9.5 (PGP), a general neural marker, dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), indicators for presumptive symp

Rituximab Monotherapy for Compressive Optic Neuropathy With Giant Ocular Adnexal Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue lymphoma.

A rare case of compressive optic neuropathy due to giant mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma in the orbit was presented. A 87-year-old woman was aware of a slow progressive left ocular proptosis for 10 years and presented after becoming aware of a sudden progression of the proptosis accompanying visual disturbance over the previous 2 months. Orbital imaging and a biopsy of the tumor revealed a mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma occupying her left orbit compressing and stretching the left optic nerve. Considering her age and the additional adverse effects of external beam radiati

Chronic penile denervation in the rat: effect on cavernous tissue morphology and function.

We evaluated the effects of chronic penile denervation on cavernous tissue morphology and function in 36 Sprague-Dawley rats. At age seven weeks, 18 animals underwent bilateral cavernous nerve neurectomy: 18 animals underwent sham operation as a control. A functional, biochemical and morphological assessment of the rats' penises was performed at 4 months. In denervated rats, intracavernous pressure failed to rise with electrostimulation of the pelvic plexus. However, a normal rise in pressure was found with direct intracavernous injection of sodium nitroprusside and papaverine. Sodium dodecyls

Maffucci's syndrome--the result of neural abnormalities? Evidence of mitogenic neurotransmitters present in enchondromas and soft tissue hemangiomas.

BACKGROUND: Maffucci's syndrome (MS) is distinguished by the enigmatic association of benign cartilaginous bone tumors and soft tissue hemangiomas. METHODS: This study was conducted to define the distribution of nerves and neuropeptides around these tumors. Results were measured by quantitative image analysis of immunohistochemical staining. Four types of tissues were compared: connective tissues around normal muscles, solitary hemangiomas, MS hemangiomas, and MS enchondromas (the last two from a single patient). RESULTS: The number of nerves was found to be quadrupled in both types of heman

Accessory nerve monitoring and stimulation during neck surgery.

Iatrogenic injury to the spinal accessory nerve following surgical procdures in the neck is well recognized in causing significant morbidity to patients, with shoulder pain and loss of function being particularly problematic. We have used a Magstim Neurosign 100 peripheral nerve monitor, that is most often used in our practice to monitor the facial nerve during middle ear and parotid surgery, to monitor the accessory nerve during neck surgery. Ten patients undergoing accessory nerve-sparing neck dissection, or excision biopsy of neck mass had their accessory nerve monitored during the procedur

[Value of the neurovascular guide plate for pelvic surgery].

In the past few years great effort has been made to reduce the morbidity after oncologic operations in the small pelvis of the male. In this respect it is essential for urologic surgeons to orient themselves with the anatomic structures that mark the course of the important vessels and nerves. For this reason an anatomic study of the connective tissue in the male pelvis was performed in which dissections and serial sections were analyzed. The results show that the connective tissue in the male pelvis does not represent a monomorphic block but consists of several portions of varying density. Th

Hierarchical microtopology and phase-specific delivery functionally restore ultralong nerve continuity across species.

Repairing ultralong peripheral nerve defects remains a major clinical challenge, primarily due to the requirement for regenerative platforms to be capable of integrating spatial guidance with temporally resolved biochemical cues. To address this, we developed a clinically translatable, fully synthetic nerve conduit that aligns with native regenerative principles through hierarchical microtopological engineering and phase-specific molecular delivery. This design creates a proregenerative microenvironment by synchronizing structural cues with repair cascades. The neuroanatomically inspired core

Perspectives on the Novel Multifunctional Nerve Guidance Conduits: From Specific Regenerative Procedures to Motor Function Rebuilding.

Peripheral nerve injury potentially destroys the quality of life by inducing functional movement disorders and sensory capacity loss, which results in severe disability and substantial psychological, social, and financial burdens. Autologous nerve grafting has been commonly used as treatment in the clinic; however, its rare donor availability limits its application. A series of artificial nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) with advanced architectures are also proposed to promote injured peripheral nerve regeneration, which is a complicated process from axon sprouting to targeted muscle reinnervati

Effect of Electrical Stimulation on Nerve-Guided Facial Nerve Regeneration.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of electrical stimulation on poly(d,l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) in promoting the recovery of facial function and nerve regeneration after facial nerve (FN) injury in a rat model. In the experimental group, both the NGC and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (ES) were used simultaneously; in the control group, only NGC was used. ES groups were divided into two groups, and direct current (DC) and charge-balanced pulse stimulation (Pulse) were applied. The ES groups showed significantly improved whisker movement t

A Bioresorbable and Conductive Scaffold Integrating Silicon Membranes for Peripheral Nerve Regeneration.

Peripheral nerve injury represents one of the most common types of traumatic damage, severely impairing motor and sensory functions, and posttraumatic nerve regeneration remains a major challenge. Electrical cues are critical bioactive factors that promote nerve regrowth, and bioartificial scaffolds incorporating conductive materials to enhance the endogenous electrical field have been demonstrated to be effective. The utilization of fully biodegradable scaffolds can eliminate material residues, and circumvent the need for secondary retrieval procedures. Here, a fully bioresorbable and conduct

The vascularized sural nerve graft based on a peroneal artery perforator for reconstruction of the inferior alveolar nerve defect.

The sural nerve has been described for nerve reconstruction of the maxillofacial region since it provides many advantages. We report a case of a vascularized sural nerve graft based on a peroneal artery perforator for immediate reconstruction after the removal of intraosseous neuroma originating in the inferior alveolar nerve. The patient had a neuroma caused by iatrogenic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve. A 4-cm long neuroma existed in the inferior alveolar nerve and was resected. A peroneal perforator was chosen as the pedicle of the vascularized sural nerve graft for the nerve gap. The

Neuromuscular choristoma of the internal auditory meatus.

Choristomas of the internal auditory meatus are exceedingly rare tumors. In most cases, neuromuscular choristomas have initially been misdiagnosed as vestibular schwannomas (VS). No known characteristics in the clinical presentation or in imaging exist distinguishing these tumors from VS, which are the most common tumors at this location [Smith et al.: AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 1997;18:327-329]. We present a case of a neuromuscular choristoma of the 8th cranial nerve that was operated because of growth demonstrated on two MRI scans 3 months apart. We were convinced that this young patient would re

Relationship between phosphorylation and synthesis of goldfish optic nerve proteins during regeneration.

After intraocular injection of radiolabeled phosphate and 3H-proline, the labeling of goldfish optic nerve proteins was monitored over a 7 week period of regeneration following a lesion to the optic tract. Labeled phosphate incorporation into total nerve protein increased to a peak value about twice that in normal nerve at 3 weeks after injury, then declined to slightly above normal by 7 weeks. Incorporation of 3H-proline showed a higher rise and a steeper decline, with values still significantly above normal at 7 weeks. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis revealed that almost all the individu

Toluidine Blue Staining of Resin-Embedded Sections for Evaluation of Peripheral Nerve Morphology.

Peripheral nerves extend throughout the body, innervating target tissues with motor or sensory axons. Due to widespread distribution, peripheral nerves are frequently damaged because of trauma or disease. As methods and strategies have been developed to assess peripheral nerve injury in animal models, function and regeneration, analyzing the morphometry of the peripheral nerve has become an essential terminal outcome measurement. Toluidine blue staining of nerve cross sections obtained from resin embedded nerve sections is a reproducible method for qualitative and quantitative assessments of p
