Digital dermoscopy analysis and artificial neural network for the differentiation of clinically atypical pigmented skin lesions: a retrospective study.

Noninvasive diagnostic methods such as dermoscopy or epiluminescence light microscopy have been developed in an attempt to improve diagnostic accuracy of pigmented skin lesions. The evaluation of the many morphologic characteristics of pigmented skin lesions observable by epiluminescence light microscopy, however, is often extremely complex and subjective. With the aim of obviating these problems of qualitative interpretation, methods based on mathematical analysis of pigmented skin lesions have recently been designed. These methods are based on computerized analysis of digital images obtained

Correlation between NGF levels in wound chamber fluid and cytological localization of NGF and NGF receptor in axotomized rat sciatic nerve.

When a silicone tube is implanted in transected rat sciatic nerve, there is plasma accumulation and formation of a fibrin cable followed by proliferation and migration of neural and nonneural cells from the nerve stumps into the cable. The wound fluid exhibited neurotrophic activity of unknown origin and nature. In this study, we analyzed the NGF level in wound fluid by a sensitive enzyme immunoassay and correlated the NGF level with the cytological localization of NGF, low affinity NGF receptor (p75NGFR), and Trk receptor in the axotomized nerve by immunohistochemistry. We demonstrated a risi

Spinal cord-notochord relationship in normal human embryos and in a human embryo with double spinal cord.

Spinal cord-notochord relationship was analyzed histologically and immunohistochemically in normal human conceptuses between the 4-8 developmental weeks and in a 8-week embryo with double spinal cord. In the early 4-week embryo, the gradual closure of the neural tube along the cranio-caudal body axis was paralleled by the differentiation of the median hindge point cells at the ventral midline of the tube and by its temporary close association with the notochord. During the 5th-8th developmental weeks, the neuroepithelium differentiating into three distinct layers was accompanied by a solid, ve

The innervation of the human larynx.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the gross anatomy of the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves (RLNs and SLNs) in 10 human larynges. METHODS: Whole larynges were processed to clear all soft tissue while leaving nerves stained. Then the main laryngeal nerves and the muscles they innervate were dissected and analyzed. RESULTS: It was found that in all larynges the RLNs and SLNs are connected by nerve branches other than Galen's anastomosis. The most consistent connection is in the interarytenoid muscle, where RLNs and internal SLNs combine in a neural plexus. A less consistent connection occurs in

Rapid acetylcholinesterase screening test for neural tube defect.

A 5-min optimized automated assay for measuring acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and total cholinesterase (ChE) in amniotic fluids is described in which a centrifugal analyzer is used. Total ChE was measured by using acetylthiocholine iodide and monitoring the color developed after 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) is added. We evaluated four direct and indirect procedures for measuring AChE in which thiocholine is generated. These methods involve either the specific enzyme inhibitors ethopropazine and BW284C51 or the specific substrates S-butyrylthiocholine and acetyl-beta-methylthiocholine. We

Distinct Portions of Superior Temporal Sulcus Combine Auditory Representations with Different Visual Streams.

In humans, the superior temporal sulcus (STS) combines auditory and visual information. However, the extent to which it relies on visual information from the ventral or dorsal stream remains uncertain. To address this, we analyzed open-source functional magnetic resonance imaging data collected from 15 participants (6 females and 9 males) as they watched a movie. We used artificial neural networks to investigate the relationship between multivariate response patterns in auditory cortex, the two visual streams, and the rest of the brain, finding that distinct portions of the STS combine informa

AI for diagnosing malocclusions from 3D dental models.

Accurate diagnosis of dental malocclusions remains challenging due to interobserver variability among orthodontists. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate the diagnostic reliability of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in classifying malocclusion types using 3D dental models compared with expert orthodontist assessments. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained and tested on digital impressions, and its performance was statistically analyzed against expert diagnoses. Results demonstrated strong agreement between AI predictions and orthodontist evaluations with clinically relev

An Aberrant Case of Sacrococcygeal Teratoma in a Female Infant Born of Twin Pregnancy.

Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is an uncommon infantile tumor. It has a female preponderance with malignant variants being more common in males. These usually manifest as palpable masses over the sacral region in infancy which may or may not be associated with neural tube defects. An initial radiological investigation is warranted to analyze the extent and components of the mass to guide an approach for surgical excision. We present a classic case of an SCT in a female infant born as a twin. This mass was evaluated radiologically by X-ray and ultrasound followed by histopathological correlation

Neural basis of individual differences in impulsivity: contributions of corticolimbic circuits for behavioral arousal and control.

The objective of the current study was to analyze the neural correlates of behavioral arousal and inhibitory control as they relate to individual differences in impulsivity via well-established functional MRI amygdala reactivity and prefrontal inhibitory control paradigms in healthy adult subjects. Impulsivity correlated positively with activity of the bilateral ventral amygdala, parahippocampal gyrus, dorsal anterior cingulate gyrus (BA 32), and bilateral caudate. Conversely, impulsivity correlated negatively with activity of the dorsal amygdala and ventral prefrontal cortex (BA 47). Together

Dynamic properties of an SARS-CoV-2 epidemic model via stochastic PINNs.

This paper introduces a novel stochastic SEIRV model for investigating the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic using stochastic physics-informed neural networks (S-PINNs). We first prove the global positivity of solutions via Lyapunov functions and Itô's formula. Then, persistence and extinction properties are analyzed by a threshold. The S-PINNs algorithm integrates noise into the loss function for seamless data-driven and physics-based learning. Finally, the algorithm based on the SEIRV model is applied to SARS-CoV-2 data from Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium, and it outperforms PINNs, LSTMs,

Effectiveness of neural mobilization in patients with spinal radiculopathy: a critical review.

Spinal radiculopathy (SR) is a multifactorial nerve root injury that can result in significant pain, psychological stress and disability. It can occur at any level of the spinal column with the highest percentage in the lumbar spine. Amongst the various interventions that have been suggested, neural mobilization (NM) has been advocated as an effective treatment option. The purpose of this review is to (1) examine pathophysiological aspects of spinal roots and peripheral nerves, (2) analyze the proposed mechanisms of NM as treatment of injured nerve tissues and (3) critically review the existin

Humor in autism and Asperger syndrome.

Research has shown that individuals with autism and Asperger syndrome are impaired in humor appreciation, although anecdotal and parental reports provide some evidence to the contrary. This paper reviews the cognitive and affective processes involved in humor and recent neurological findings. It examines humor expression and understanding in autism and Asperger syndrome in the context of the main psychological theories (Theory of Mind, Executive Functions, Weak Central Coherence and Laterization models) and associated neural substrates. In the concluding sections, examples of humor displayed b

Comparison of machine learning models to classify Auditory Brainstem Responses recorded from children with Auditory Processing Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) offer a unique opportunity to assess the neural integrity of the peripheral auditory nervous system in individuals presenting with listening difficulties. ABRs are typically recorded and analyzed by an audiologist who manually measures the timing and quality of the waveforms. The interpretation of ABRs requires considerable experience and training, and inappropriate interpretation can lead to incorrect judgments about the integrity of the system. Machine learning (ML) techniques may be a suitable approach to automate ABR interpretation and redu

Distinct value-modulated connectomic signatures during monetary incentive anticipation predict severity and craving in internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) involves dysregulated incentive processing, yet precise neural substrates remain inconsistent. While the Monetary Incentive Delay (MID) task assesses reward systems, traditional analyses conflate reward valence (Value) and motivational salience, masking process-specific neural alterations. This study evaluated which neural features-from localized activity to large-scale connectivity-most effectively characterize IGD clinical phenotypes. METHODS: We analyzed fMRI data from 90 regular gamers, including 45 participants in the IGD group and 45 matched re

EEG burst dynamics as an indicator of a progressive hypoxic state.

Hypoxia disrupts perceptual and cognitive processes, posing serious risks for aircraft pilots. To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying these effects, we analyzed EEG subband power and burst dynamics in 27 participants reporting symptoms and performing cognitive tasks under progressive hypoxia. We hypothesized that specific burst features reflect declining oxygen availability and correlate with physiological, task performance, and symptom measures. Measurements were obtained during two conditions: normoxia, with O2 maintained at 21%, and hypoxia, where O2 was progressively decreased in

A Toaster in the Bathroom: Neural Correlates of Semantic Construction During Episodic Memory Recall.

When recalling what you ate for breakfast last Wednesday, you might not remember the exact meal, but you may confidently select the items you typically eat. Here, semantic knowledge (i.e., what you usually eat) contributes to the reconstructive process of episodic memory retrieval (i.e., what you actually ate). In the current fMRI study, we used a highly realistic virtual environment to test this influence of semantic knowledge on episodic memory retrieval. During the task, 60 participants actively (task-relevant) or passively (task-irrelevant) encountered everyday objects that were either con

Identification of gene expression profile of neural crest-derived cells isolated from submandibular glands of adult mice.

Neural crest cells in the embryo migrate to reach target sites as neural crest-derived cells (NCDCs) where they differentiate into a variety of derivatives. Some NCDCs are maintained in an undifferentiated state throughout the life of the animal and are considered to be a useful cell source for regenerative medicine. However, no established method to obtain NCDCs sufficient for regenerative medicine from adults with high purity has been presented, since their distribution in adult tissues is not fully understood. It is critical to identify reliable markers for NCDCs in adults, as the expressio

Propranolol and lidocaine inhibit neural norepinephrine release in hearts with increased extracellular potassium and ischemia.

BACKGROUND: Propranolol and lidocaine are effective antiarrhythmic drugs in myocardial ischemia and infarction. As sympathetic nerve activation and norepinephrine release in ischemic hearts are arrhythmogenic, we tested the possibility that both agents inhibit neural norepinephrine release following sympathetic activation in the ischemic environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: The model used was an in situ perfused innervated rat heart. Norepinephrine release was induced by electrical stimulation of the left cervicothoracic stellate ganglion and analyzed using radioenzymatic assay or high-performan
