A case of progressive extrinsic ophthalmoplegia associated with peripheral neuropathy and hypertriglyceridemia type IV is described. Motor and sensory conduction velocities of the spinal nerves were severely decreased, while the EMG of the facial muscles was more suggested of a myopathic disorder. Electron microscopic study of biopsies of biceps and peroneus brevis muscles disclosed many ragged red fibers, mainly type I, which contained typical abnormal mitochondria. Other fibers, all type II, contained increased amounts of glycogen between myofibrils or beneath the sarcolemmal membrane, but t

In a previous study the authors discussed the value of the determination of the compound action potential amplitude of the m. orbicularis oris following supramaximal stimuli of the facial nerve for the prognosis of facial paresis. In this study they investigate the suitability of the determination of the latency periods for an early prognosis. The latency periods in 20 normal subjects and 26 patients with idiopathic facial paresis were messured and continuously checked. The study reveals that a difference of more than 0.5 msec. between the latency periods of normal and paretic patients does no

The results of clinical, electrophysiologic, and histologic studies in three patients with a type of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, subacute proximal diabetic neuropathy (diabetic amyotrophy), are presented. On the basis of our findings, we suggest that diabetic amyotrophy is a clinical and pathologic entity separate from mononeuritis multiplex. These patients have a generalized neuropathy, and it is postulated that disordered neuron-axonal metabolism forms the basis for the pathologic and clinical changes. Histochemical changes in the muscle biopsy showed type 1 predominance. We suggest that

Krabbe's infantile cerebral sclerosis with a prolonged course was present in a boy who became increasingly hypertonic during infancy and had an increased protein level in the spinal fluid. At 4 years he showed significant growth failure, profound mental retardation, spastic quadriplegia, bilateral optic atrophy, and depressed tendon reflexes. Conduction velocity in motor fibers of the median nerve had become progressively impaired. Autopsy at 5 years 10 months showed severe leukodystrophy with demyelination and gliosis. No stored breakdown products or globoid cells were seen in the brain. Gala

Six patients with sickle cell anemia were treated with sodium cyanate (30 mg/kg/day). In four, treatment was stopped because of definite or suspected toxicity, and no improvement was seen in the other two. Most alarming was the sudden development of peripheral motor neuropathy in a patient whose red blood cells contained less than 0.6 mols NCO-/mol of hemoglobin: six months after treatment was stopped, function had not completely returned in this patient. Safe oral dosage regimens may not be effective, but extra-corporeal treatment of sickle cells with cyanate, or other compounds, might circum

Among neural lesions of the arms, the most common one is the medianus lesion in the carpal tunnel, followed by the ulnar nerve lesion in the elbow, while the ulnar nerve compression in the Guyon tunnel is found rarely. Besides the history and the clinical picture, the electromyoneurographic analyses make an early and accurate diagnosis possible. The characteristics of the evoked muscle potential and distal latencies in the diagnosis of the carpal tunnel syndrome are of utmost importance. In diagnosing the cubital syndrome, the multisegmental determination of the motor conduction velocity of th

Conclusion The SGA condition is responsible for the appearance of brainstem neural conduction dysfunction measured by the brainstem auditory evoked potentials, probably by the maturation process of the auditory pathway of this population.

The management of chronic peripheral neuropathic pain conditions with conventional treatments is still limited. In this present study, we aimed to determine the anti-neuropathic actions of pulsed magnetic field (PMF) treatments as a therapeutic. Effects of daily PMF treatments for 4 weeks were investigated by examining pain behaviors, hyperalgesia and allodynia, electrophysiological parameters, amplitude of compound action potential (CAP) and sciatic nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) and histopathological changes in rats with chronic constriction injury (CCI). Peripheral and central pro-inflamm

IMPORTANCE: There continues to be a paucity of data regarding the pharyngeal plexus (PP) and its interconnectivity with the laryngeal nerves … and the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) were sequentially transected to help elucidate the path of neural conduction.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Confirmation of TA muscle contraction by EMG.
RESULTS: Stimulation of the PP evoked a response from the TA muscle in 6 of 7 subject animals. In 3 of 7 subjects, a long latency response (mean, 14.62 milliseconds) was id …

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Leprosy neuropathy (LN) may cause demyelination that worsens during the leprosy reactions (LR). Type-1 LR (T1LR) occurs in patients with cell-mediated immune response against M. leprae, and Type-2 LR (T2LR) occurs in multibacillary cases. The patterns of nerve impairment need to be clarified, as both demyelination and axonal degeneration are commonly observed. This study aimed to describe how to interpret the demyelinating impairment in LN.
METHODS: Retrospective observational analysis of leprosy patients in a National Reference Center in Brazil between 2014-2023.
RESULTS:

AIM: Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is one of the most common long-term complications of diabetes mellitus and clinically can be characterized by an elevated nociceptive response with electrophysiological conduction abnormalities. The present investigation was designed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of hesperidin against STZ induced diabetic neuropathic pain in laboratory rats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: DN was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats (150-200 g) by intraperitoneal administration of streptozotocin (STZ) (55 mg/kg, p.o.). Rats were divided into various groups, namely, STZ control (vehicle

BACKGROUND: Hirayama disease is a juvenile muscular atrophy of the distal upper extremities and affects mainly young males. The present study aimed to investigate the neuroelectrophysiological characteristics of Hirayama disease.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the neural conduction velocity (NCV) parameters and needle-electrode electromyograms (EMG) of 14 patients with Hirayama disease. According to the clinical features of the patients, NCV was performed on affected upper-limb including median nerves and ulnar nerves, while EMG was selectively performed on upper and lower extremities, …
