BACKGROUND: Pediatric neurology training must evolve to meet increasing clinical complexity and rapid advances in neuroscience while maintaining high standards of family-centered care. In Saudi Arabia, structured residency programs have expanded under national accreditation frameworks; however, systematic evaluations of curriculum adequacy from the faculty perspective remain limited. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the pediatric neurology training curriculum within the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS)-accredited training system (including programs in Saudi Arabia an…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gaps in preparedness for independent practice are common among recent graduates. Clinical experiences serve as the foundation for learning during residency, yet the breadth and variability of clinical exposure of child neurology residents remain poorly characterized. To inform programmatic curricular development and precision medical education (PME), we must better characterize learners' clinical exposure during training. We aimed to use electronic health record (EHR) data to catalog resident clinical experiences, linking diagnostic codes to educational benchmarks.

We present a female pediatric patient with known neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) whose surveillance imaging began showing multifocal periventricular and juxtacortical lesions with transient enhancement, initially attributed to NF1-related focal areas of signal intensity. Over time, the radiographic pattern raised concern for demyelinating disease. CSF studies revealed 10 unique oligoclonal bands. Despite the absence of neurologic symptoms, treatment with dimethyl fumarate was initiated and later transitioned to rituximab in the setting of ongoing active radiographic disease. Although the patien

Effectively managing evidence-based information is increasingly challenging. This study tested large language models (LLMs), including document- and online-enabled retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems, using 13 recent neurology guidelines across 130 questions. Results showed substantial variability. RAG improved accuracy compared to base models but still produced potentially harmful answers. RAG-based systems performed worse on case-based than knowledge-based questions. Further refinement and improved regulation is needed for safe clinical integration of RAG-enhanced LLMs.

INTRODUCTION: Lactating physicians face considerable challenges in achieving lactation goals due to inflexible schedules and a lack of break time. While federal mandates have outlined the necessity of lactation breaks, the frequency and duration of breaks are unspecified. The objective of this study was to fill this gap by designing and implementing an outpatient neurology resident clinic schedule with protected lactation breaks, ensuring support and quality of trainees' educational experience.
METHODS: This quality improvement study began with developing a prototype schedule with input from …

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a diagnostic term used to describe a group of permanent disorders of movement and posture that cause activity limitations and are attributed to non-progressive disturbances in the developing fetal or infant brain. The motor disorders are often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, communication, and behavior, as well as epilepsy and secondary musculoskeletal problems. The study aims to describe and analyze antenatal and intrapartum risk factors for children with CP attending Wad Madani Pediatric Teaching Hospital during the study duration. This

This necessitates an updated framework for PD definition and diagnosis. The German Society for Neurology now endorses a broader concept of PD, incorporating both idiopathic and hereditary forms, as opposed to the previously narrower concept of "idiopathic Parkinson syndrome." IntroductionPediatric neurology provides care for children with complex developmental disorders with environmental, genetic, metabolic, and teratogenic etiologies. Common neurodevelopmental conditions include attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism spectrum disorder. However, only minimal attention from pediatric neurology journals has been devoted to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. This is surprising because fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with a prevalence of between 1% and 5% of school-age children.MethodsThis scoping review had 2…

Infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) leads to COVID-19 (COrona VIrus Disease-2019). SARS-CoV-2 acute infection may be associated with an increased incidence of neurological manifestations such as encephalopathy and encephalomyelitis, ischemic stroke and intracerebral hemorrhage, anosmia and neuromuscular diseases. Neurological manifestations are commonly reported during the post-acute phase and are also present in Long-COVID (LCS) and post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS). In October 2020, the German Society of Neurology (DGN, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurolo…

Acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1) is a peroxisomal enzyme involved in beta-oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids. Although loss of function of ACOX1 had been previously described, gain-of-function variation of ACOX1 gene has been only recently identified, with a paucity of known cases. Gain-of-function variation results in overproduction of reactive oxygen species, resulting in progressive neurodegeneration with discrete relapses. We report the case of a 19-year-old woman with a 5-year history of longitudinally extensive posterior predominant myelopathy, bilateral corneal scars, and white matter l

Catatonia is a well-described clinical syndrome characterized by features that range from mutism, negativism and stupor to agitation, mannerisms and stereotype. Causes of catatonia may range from organic brain disorders to psychiatric conditions. Despite a characteristic syndrome, catatonia is grossly under diagnosed. The reason for missed diagnosis of catatonia in neurology setting is not clear. Poor awareness is an unlikely cause because catatonia is taught among conditions with deregulated consciousness like vegetative state, locked-in state and akinetic mutism. We determined the proportion…
