A brain bank in a neuropathology laboratory (with some emphasis on diagnostic criteria).

The Brain Bank of La Salpêtrière Hospital (Paris) is implanted in a neuropathology laboratory. It is multipurpose, prospective, and "free of charge" for the users. Protocols are prospectively established, in collaboration with the neuroscientists. One of our major difficulties in the collection of cases concerns presently the controls: the neurological status of patients coming from Neurology departments has usually been correctly assessed but those patients are bad controls. The normality of the neurological status of patients dying in other departments is difficult to assess retrospectively.…

The neuropathology of liver transplantation: comparison of main complications in children and adults.

Neurologic complications remain important factors in mortality and morbidity of liver transplant patients, despite 5-yr survival rates of nearly 75% achieved with improved surgical and anesthetic techniques, better selection of recipients and donors, and immunosuppression. In order to analyze and compare the occurrence of neuropathologic complications in children with that in adults, we reviewed all complete autopsies done on liver transplant patients at the University of Pittsburgh from March 1, 1981 until December 31, 1990. A retrospective study of all neuropathologic lesions in 68 children

Partial agenesis of the anterior corpus callosum: correlation between appearance, imaging, and neuropathology.

Two patients with partial (semilobar) holotelencephaly are reported with apparent partial agenesis of the corpora callosa. These patients are of interest because they appear to possess the posterior portion of the corpus callosum but not its anterior component. Because the corpus callosum develops in the commissural plate rostrally and is elaborated in a rostral-caudal gradient, this apparent lack of the rostral component is embryologically puzzling. The neuropathologic studies of 1 patient resolved the apparent discrepancy between magnetic resonance imaging and embryology of the corpus callos

Neuropathology of two fatal cases of measles in the 1988-1989 Houston epidemic.

The clinical course and autopsy findings of 2 patients with measles encephalitis that occurred during the 1988-1989 Houston epidemic are reported. A previously healthy 25-month-old boy had serologically-proved measles, hemophagocytic syndrome, and acute disseminated demyelinating encephalitis. A 19-year-old male with acute lymphocytic leukemia had proved measles pneumonia and acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis. These patients represent a broad spectrum of measles-induced immunopathic complications of the central nervous system.

Protection from herpes simplex virus-induced neuropathology in mice showing delayed hypersensitivity tolerance.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-susceptible mice inoculated under conditions favouring the preferential activation of T suppressor (Ts) cells acting on the delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response to the virus were protected from lethal herpes encephalitis and from central nervous system (CNS) demyelination (as reflected by ear paralysis), compared to controls given normal priming. Thus, suppressed DTH was not incompatible with recovery from acute infection and may indeed have been beneficial. Protection could be transferred by T cells from donors given a 'DTH-tolerogenic' priming regime. It wa

The neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease: a review with pathogenetic, aetiological and therapeutic considerations.

The neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease is reviewed in this paper emphasizing the morphological and morphometric changes that occur in the disease and their relationship to age and ageing. From this, a new hypothesis of pathogenesis is presented which accounts for the pattern of neuronal damage in Alzheimer's disease. This is that the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease begins with a leakage of a neurotoxin through a defective cortical blood brain barrier. This incites development of the senile plaque and later, via a retrograde transport of the same (or different) factors, intracellular neu…

Developmental neuropathology in bronchopulmonary dysplasia: alteration of glial fibrillary acidic protein and myelination.

Developmental changes of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and myelination were examined in the brains of 25 children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Widespread GFAP-positive, bouquet-shaped glia occurred in the cerebral white matter and medulla oblongata of most cases and increased during the perinatal period, independent of the presence of luekomalacia. Acceleration of myelination was suggested in five of 10 cases during the period of 40 to 48 weeks postconceptional age, just before myelin sheaths normally appear. However, in two of four cases seen during late infancy myelination

Neuropathology of "spinning syndrome" induced by prenatal intoxication with a PCB in mice.

A striking motor dysfunction, "spinning syndrome," developed with a high frequency in weaning mice whose dams received oral 3,4,3',4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (4-CB) during gestation (day 10 through day 16). The syndrome is permanent and is characterized by swift circling movements sustained in one direction at a minimal rate of 40 turns/min (usually 50 to 150 turns/min), restlessness, and hyperkinesia. Twenty-four spinners and 4-CB nonspinners and age-matched controls were subjected to histopathologic, histofluorescent, histochemical, and electron microscopic studies. The most reliable histopathol

Neuropathological associations of limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathological change (LATE-NC) differ between the oldest-old and younger-old.

Limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathological change (LATE-NC) is most often seen in the oldest-old (≥ 90 years of age) but can also be present in the younger-old (< 90 years of age). In this study, we compared the neuropathological associations of LATE-NC and contribution of LATE-NC to cognitive impairment between the oldest-old and younger-old. We observed significant differences in the prevalence of LATE-NC and its association with other co-pathologies in these two age groups. LATE-NC was present in 30.9% (34/110) of the oldest-old but only 9.4% (19/203) of the youn

Correlation Between Neuroimaging and Neuropathologic Findings in Pediatric ECMO Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Neurologic complications are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Antemortem neuroimaging is limited, while postmortem neuropathology provides definitive but rarely available assessment. Correlating imaging with pathology may improve diagnostic accuracy and monitoring strategies. DESIGN: We performed a retrospective, single-center cohort study of neonates and children (0-18 years) supported with ECMO (2009-2024) who underwent cerebral autopsy. Standardized neuropathologic sampling across six brain regions …

Association of late-life variability in hemoglobin A1C with postmortem neuropathologies.

INTRODUCTION: To study the relationship of late-life hemoglobin A1C (A1C) with postmortem neuropathology in older adults with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: A total of 990 participants from five cohort studies of aging and dementia with at least two annually-collected A1C measures, who had autopsy. Neuropathologic evaluations documented cerebrovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and other pathologies. To evaluate the association of A1C mean and variability (standard deviation [SD]) with neuropathology, we used a series of adjusted regression models. RESULTS: Participant…

Neuropathological Correlates of White Matter Hyperintensities in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy.

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are frequently observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). The neuropathological substrates that underlie WMHs in CAA are unclear, and it remains largely unexplored whether the different WMH distribution patterns associated with CAA (posterior confluent and subcortical multispot) reflect alternative pathophysiological mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a combined in vivo MRI-ex vivo MRI-neuropathological study in patients with definite CAA. Formalin-fixed hemispheres from 19 patien

Neuropathological assessment of the olfactory bulb and tract in individuals with COVID-19.

The majority of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) experience a loss in their sense of smell and accumulate insoluble α-synuclein aggregates in their olfactory bulbs (OB). Subjects affected by a SARS-CoV-2-linked illness (COVID-19) also frequently experience hyposmia. We previously postulated that microglial activation as well as α-synuclein and tau misprocessing can occur during host responses following microbial encounters. Using semiquantitative measurements of immunohistochemical signals, we examined OB and olfactory tract specimens collected serially at autopsies between 2020 and 2023.

Differential methylation analysis in neuropathologically confirmed dementia with Lewy bodies.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a common form of dementia in the elderly population. We performed genome-wide DNA methylation mapping of cerebellar tissue from pathologically confirmed DLB cases and controls to study the epigenetic profile of this understudied disease. After quality control filtering, 728,197 CpG-sites in 278 cases and 172 controls were available for the analysis. We undertook an epigenome-wide association study, which found a differential methylation signature in DLB cases. Our analysis identified seven differentially methylated probes and three regions associated with DLB

Neuropathologic Impacts of JAK Inhibitor Treatment in Aicardi-Goutières Syndrome.

Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a genetic interferonopathy characterized by upregulation of type I interferon response. It is associated with increased mortality and severe disabilities. Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors have shown effectiveness in treatment of AGS through blocking the downstream effects of interferon activation. We illustrate post-mortem histopathologic findings in a patient with AGS who received baricitinib treatment for a duration of over 4 years, initiating at a remarkably young age of 2 months. We observed global cerebral atrophy, markedly diminished white matter, abundan

Hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus in corticobasal degeneration: A neuropathological study.

AIMS: Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder. The status of the inferior olivary nucleus (ION) in CBD has been inadequately investigated. In this study, we conducted a pathological investigation of the ION in CBD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the data of Japanese patients with pathologically confirmed CBD who underwent consecutive autopsies between 1985 and 2020 at our institute. We retrospectively examined clinical data from medical records and clinicopathological conferences and semi-quantitatively assessed the ION, central tegmental tract, superior cereb
