This review discusses the scope of using (quantitative) electromyography (EMG) in diagnosing myopathies and neuropathies in equine patients. In human medicine, many EMG methods are available for the diagnosis, pathophysiological description and evaluation, monitoring, or rehabilitation of patients, and some of these techniques have also been applied to horses. EMG results are usually combined with other neurophysiological data, ultrasound, histochemistry, biochemistry of muscle biopsies, and clinical signs in order to provide a complete picture of the condition and its clinical course. EMG tec

The surgical results of this series of occult spina bifida seem better than the natural history registered in the long pre-operative period in terms of neurological deterioration. The major contribution to this result is attributed to neurophysiological monitoring that lowers the risks of permanent damage and increases the percentage of effective detethering. The present series of TCS, due to conus and filar lipoma, documents that CM1 is a really rare association occurring in less than 6% of the patients, despite the low position of conus. The detethering procedure did not influence the tonsil…

Flexible response adaptation and the control of conflicting information play a pivotal role in daily life. Yet, little is known about the neuronal mechanisms mediating parallel control of these processes. We examined these mechanisms using a multi-methodological approach that integrated data from event-related potentials (ERPs) with structural MRI data and source localisation using sLORETA. Moreover, we calculated evoked wavelet oscillations. We applied this multi-methodological approach in healthy subjects and patients in a prodromal phase of a major basal ganglia disorder (i.e., Huntington's

STUDY DESIGN: Review article.
OBJECTIVE: To review the epidemiology, etiology, risk factors, prevention, and treatment of neurological complications associated with cervical spine surgery. The article focuses on C5 palsy and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Neurological problems are the complications most feared by patients and surgeons alike, but, fortunately, spinal cord injury is uncommon. C5 palsy is a less severe but much more common and perplexing problem. Intraoperative monitoring is widely used in cervical spine surgery, but it is unclear how …

BACKGROUND: Any treatment of multiple sclerosis should preserve mental function, considering how cognitive deterioration interferes with quality of life. However, mental assessment is still realized with neuro-psychological tests without monitoring cognition on neurobiological grounds whereas the ongoing neural activity is readily observable and readable.
OBJECTIVE: The proposed method deciphers electrical brain states which as multi-dimensional cognetoms quantitatively discriminate normal from pathological patterns in an EEG.
METHOD: Baseline recordings from a prior EEG study of 88 subjects

Adaptive behaviour requires interaction between neurocognitive systems. Yet, the possibility of concurrent cognitive control and incidental sequence learning remains contentious. We designed an experimental procedure of cognitive conflict monitoring that follows a pre-defined sequence unknown to participants, in which either statistical or rule-based regularities were manipulated. We show that participants learnt the statistical differences in the sequence when stimulus conflict was high. Neurophysiological (EEG) analyses confirmed but also specified the behavioural results: the nature of conf

Respiratory and airway-protective muscle weakness caused by the blockade of neuromuscular transmission is a major cause of early mortality from snakebite envenoming (SBE). Once weakness is manifest, antivenom appears to be of limited effectiveness in improving neuromuscular function. Herein, we review the topic of venom-induced neuromuscular blockade and consider the utility of adopting clinical management methods originally developed for the safe use of neuromuscular blocking agents by anesthesiologists in operating rooms and critical care units. Failure to quantify neuromuscular weakness in

In the past decade, the use of intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) in thyroid and parathyroid surgery has been widely accepted by surgeons as a useful technology for improving laryngeal nerve identification and voice outcomes, facilitating neurophysiological research, educating and training surgeons, and reducing surgical complications and malpractice litigation. Informing patients about IONM is not only good practice and helpful in promoting the efficient use of IONM resources but is indispensable for effective shared decision making between the patient and surgeon. BACKGROUND: The blink reflex (BR) can be used as a routine monitoring method during facial nerve microvascular decompression. This study aimed to investigate whether the use of the BR in hemifacial spasm (HFS) surgery is comparable to that of the lateral spread reflex (LSR), and to explore its significance for guiding intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM).
METHODS: Patients undergoing facial nerve microvascular decompression from 2016 to 2018 were included in the study. According to the results of IONM, the intraoperative monitoring items of the BR and two conventional facial ne…

OBJECTIVE: Intraoperative neurophysiological mapping can help identify the trigeminal nerve (TN) during surgeries where it is at risk. Low-stimulating currents may only recruit sensory branch stimulation and trigger reflex responses, potentially complicating interpretation during monitoring. This report aims to address this issue by examining cases to categorize TN responses in relation to varying stimulation intensities, identify stimulation patterns, and clarify common response characteristics in surgical contexts.
METHODS: Seven cerebellopontine (CP) angle surgery cases with TN exposure we

Behavioral components of chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q), caused by the most common human microdeletion, include cognitive and adaptive functioning impairments, heightened anxiety, and an elevated risk of schizophrenia. We investigated how interactions between executive function and the largely overlooked factor of emotion regulation might relate to the incidence of symptoms of psychotic thinking in youth with 22q. We measured neural activity with event-related potentials (ERPs) in variants of an inhibitory function (Go/No-Go) experimental paradigm that presented affective or non-af

Decoding the dynamic physiological responses of the human central and autonomic nervous systems to sustained cognitive loads is essential for occupational health and neuroergonomics. This study investigates the multidimensional neurophysiological mechanisms of fatigue during complex human-machine interactions, utilizing a simulated agricultural operation paradigm. We developed a multimodal "eye-brain-heart" physio-logging framework, synchronously recording 21-channel EEG, ECG, and pupillometry in 12 experienced subjects over a continuous 5-hour protocol. Given the controlled small-sample and m

<p>Background: Percutaneous cervical cordotomy (PCC) is a lesioning procedure that targets the anterolateral quadrant of the spinal cord to interrupt spinothalamic pain pathways. It provides rapid and durable analgesia for patients with unilateral, medically refractory cancer pain below the C5 dermatome. Although its utilization has declined with the expansion of pharmacological and neuromodulatory therapies, PCC remains a critical palliative intervention for patients in whom opioid therapy is ineffective or intolerable. Summary: This narrative review delineates the neuroanatomical underpinnin

Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can provide corroborative data on neurophysiological alterations in Huntington's disease (HD). However, the alterations in EEG and fMRI resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC), as well as their interrelations, at different stages of HD remain insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to identify neurophysiological alterations in individuals with preclinical HD (preHD) and early manifest HD (EMHD) by analyzing EEG and fMRI rsFC and examining their interrelationships. We found significant differences in EEG po

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are a nonspecific, umbrella category that is used to collect together a range of atypical neurophysiological responses to emotional distress, physiological stressors and danger. Because PNES mimic epileptic seizures, children and adolescents with PNES usually present to neurologists or to epilepsy monitoring units. After a comprehensive neurological evaluation and a diagnosis of PNES, the patient is referred to mental health services for treatment. This study documents the diagnostic formulations - the clinical formulations about the probable neurophys

Music therapy (MT) is increasingly being integrated into intensive care unit (ICU) settings to modulate pain, stress, and emotional dysregulation. Although clinically promising, objective biomarkers for quantifying its neurophysiological effects are still missing. In this context, the electroencephalogram (EEG) represents a valid tool to assess cortical dynamics associated with cognitive-affective engagement elicited by MT. Our study aims to evaluate the role of electroencephalography as an objective tool for monitoring cortical responses to MT in the ICU. EEGs acquired from nine burn patients

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Polyneuropathy (PN) in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains underrecognized in clinical practice despite increasing evidence of its prevalence, especially among patients receiving levodopa therapy. Both iatrogenic and neurodegenerative mechanisms have been proposed. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of PN in PD patients across different therapeutic regimens, including a longitudinal evaluation of those initiating levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG).
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study on 66 PD patients classified into levodop
