Nail: News in Onychopathology.

Onychopathology (nail unit pathology) is a niche area in dermatopathology. There is a lack of familiarity with nail unit pathology and basic anatomy in general among pathologists and dermatopathologists, because of the relative rarity of such specimens in practice, and the lack of exposure and teaching regarding these lesions in training. It is however a vibrant area of dermatopathology, with knowledge evolving rapidly. In this article, we explore new information in the analysis of melanocytic and epithelial lesions of the nail unit, as well as nail inflammatory disease.

Combined Melanocytic Nevus and Nevus Sebaceus: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Nevus sebaceus is a rare congenital hamartoma with clinical and histopathological features that change with puberty. It has been associated with a number of secondary neoplasms, most of which are thought to derive from follicular germ cells. In this article, the authors describe a total of 3 cases of combined melanocytic nevus and nevus sebaceus to highlight this rare finding.

Recent-Onset Melanoma and the Implications of the Excessive Use of Tanning Devices-Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Introduction: Melanoma, a malignant tumor arising from uncontrolled melanocytic proliferation, commonly found in the skin but capable of affecting extracutaneous sites, ranks fifth among diagnosed oncological entities and is a significant cause of cancer deaths, constituting over 80% of skin cancer mortality. Genetic factors and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure, from both natural and artificial sources, are the primary risk factors. Case Presentation: We reported the case of a 25-year-old female with numerous pigmented nevi and notable changes attributed to extensive indoor tanning session

Factors related to the performance of laypersons diagnosing pigmented skin cancer: an explorative study.

It is important but challenging for prospective health professionals to learn the visual distinction between potentially harmful and harmless skin lesions, such as malignant melanomas and benign nevi. Knowledge about factors related to diagnostic performance is sparse but a prerequisite for designing and evaluating evidence-based educational interventions. Hence, this study explored how the characteristics of 240 skin lesions, the number of classified lesions and the response times of 137 laypeople were related to performance in diagnosing pigmented skin cancer. Our results showed large differ

Protein expression of prognostic genes in primary melanoma and benign nevi.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the protein expression characteristics of genes employed in a recently introduced prognostic gene expression assay for patients with cutaneous melanoma (CM). METHODS: We studied 37 patients with CM and 10 with benign (melanocytic) nevi (BN). Immunohistochemistry of primary tumor tissue was performed for eight proteins: COL6A6, DCD, GBP4, KLHL41, KRT9, PIP, SCGB1D2, SCGB2A2. RESULTS: The protein expression of most markers investigated was relatively low (e.g., DCD, KRT9, SCGB1D2) and predominantly cytoplasmatic in melanocytes and keratinocytes. COL6A6, GBP4, and KLHL41 ex

[Diagnosis of pigmented lesions of the vulva].

This article presents the different pigmented lesions of the vulva (PLV) that are systematically found in 8 to 12% of women and are most often ignored. The histological aspect of physiological pigmentation and its modifications due to hormonal impregnation should be known by pathologists in order to better understand the very large variety of lesions.

Adopting low-shot deep learning for the detection of conjunctival melanoma using ocular surface images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate low-shot deep learning models applied to conjunctival melanoma detection using a small dataset with ocular surface images. METHODS: A dataset was composed of anonymized images of four classes; conjunctival melanoma (136), nevus or melanosis (93), pterygium (75), and normal conjunctiva (94). Before training involving conventional deep learning models, two generative adversarial networks (GANs) were constructed to augment the training dataset for low-shot learning. The collected data were randomly divided into trainin

Nevus comedonicus syndrome: A systematic review of the literature.

Nevus comedonicus (NC) syndrome is a condition first identified in 1978. The cause of NC syndrome has been recently proven to be a gain-of-function, mosaic postzygotic mutation of the NEK9 gene. A systematic review of the literature retrieved 43 well-established cases of NC syndrome reported so far. Three morphological variants of NC in NC syndrome emerged: (a) the more common, predominantly comedonal type; (b) "Selhorst type"; and (c) "atrophoderma vermiculatum" type. NC syndrome is mainly associated with ocular, skeletal, and neural abnormalities, most typically ipsilateral congenital catara

Nevus depigmentosus: the analysis of 37 cases.

BACKGROUND: Nevus depigmentosus (ND) is an uncommon congenital nonprogressive hypopigmented skin disorder that can be seen anywhere on the body. We considered other depigmenting disorders and focused on distinguishing ND from vitiligo and tuberous sclerosis complex in infancy. METHODS: The diagnosis of patients with nevus depigmentosus was made differentiating it from nevus anemicus, pityriasis alba, tuberous sclerosis complex, vitiligo and other depigmenting disorders. RESULTS: Of the 37 individuals with nevus depigmentosus evaluated, 36 were children, twenty-two (59.4%) were males and 15 (

Atypical Nevi in a Patient After Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.

Dear Editor, There are few literature data about nevi in patients with a history of toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and little recommendations for follow-up and risks of melanoma (MM). Eruptive melanocytic nevi (EMN) is a rare phenomenon that has been associated with bullous disorders, immunosuppression, and immunodeficiency, but in some cases can occur without precipitating factors (1). The etiology is largely unknown, but there is evidence that immunosuppression might play a crucial role in nevogenesis, probably due to the inability of the immune system to inhibit melanocytic (MC) prolifera

Molluscum contagiosum arising in a melanocytic congenital nevus.

Molluscum contagiosum within a congenital melanocytic nevus has rarely been reported. We report a 6-year-old child with molluscum contagiosum infection arising within an intermediate melanocytic congenital nevus of the thigh, associated with itching and occasional bleeding. Dermoscopy lead to the correct diagnosis, but histologic confirmation with shave biopsy was performed to reassure the parents and allow mechanical removal of the lesions using curettage.

Dermoscopy of verrucous epidermal nevus: large brown circles as a novel feature for diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The epidermal nevus is a hamartomatous proliferation of the epithelium that can involve keratinocytes, sebaceous glands, the pilosebaceous unit, and eccrine or apocrine glands. It occurs in one in 1000 live births and most commonly presents as the verrucous type. Dermoscopy is a non-invasive technique commonly used to differentiate between melanocytic and non-melanocytic lesions. OBJECTIVES: This study was performed to analyze dermoscopic aspects of verrucous epidermal nevi, which have not previously been described. METHODS: Dermoscopic analyses of eight different verrucous epide

Intrascrotal extratesticular neurofibroma as a possible cause of failed descent in ipsilateral testis.

Intrascrotal extratesticular neurofibromas (IEN) often originate from genitofemoral nerve (GFN) and present as a paratesticular mass. Synchronous presence of IEN and undescended testis has not been reported previously. A 12-year-old boy with neurocutaneous syndrome and congenital giant melanocytic nevi along with IEN and ipsilateral undescended testis is presented, to discuss the underlying pathophysiology of failed testicular descent in the presence of IEN.
