Public health initiative at a young offenders institute.

One in four of prisoners aged 17 to 21 are fathers, often with limited experience of positive parenting themselves. The men in Aylesbury Young Offenders Institute were found to have pride in fatherhood and during parenting classes expressed a desire to become actively involved in the care of their children. They stated that they felt they needed to learn parenting skills with their partner and family rather than in isolation from them. Health visitors were involved with parenting classes in the prison education block and helped the fathers develop joint parenting skills through a family orient

Introduction of novice oncology nurses to end-of-life care.

Dying patients and their families often have unique physical, psychosocial, social, and spiritual needs that require special ized end-of-life (EOL) skills. EOL preparation of nurses has been inconsistent. Novice nurses need guidance to develop the knowledge, clinical skills, and coping strategies to provide high-quality and compassionate EOL care. Inadequate preparation for providing EOL care can lead to anxiety, stress, and burnout. Barriers that prevent adequate preparation and support of novice nurses in EOL care include lack of education, financial constraints, poor staffing, and major lif

Nursing interventions for urinary incontinence in home health.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a significant health care issue among older patients in the acute care, extended care, and home care settings. With the shift toward health care delivery in the home setting, it is becoming increasingly necessary for home health care professionals to become knowledgeable about the causes, assessment, and treatment. This article will review the epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management of UI in the home care setting. Emphasis is placed on the role of the WOC nurse as coordinator of a multidisciplinary team providing care of the home bound patient with UI.

Barriers to effective nurse-patient communication in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: It has been identified that ineffective nurse-patient communication in the emergency department can lead to frustration, mistrust and inadequate pain management. Therefore, it is important to recognise the potential barriers to effective communication, including nurse and patient-related factors. AIM: To identify what emergency nurses perceive as barriers to nurse-patient communication, and if there is any difference in the perception of communication barriers between nurses' demographic subgroups. METHOD: A total of 199 emergency nurses were recruited using convenience sampling,

Health visiting as therapy: a phenomenological perspective.

In the course of their work British health visitors encounter many individuals and families with problems. Support is usually offered, but if that support is for psychological health needs, it is less likely to be accepted as legitimate health visiting practice. Where a referral is either not accepted, or placed on a waiting list, the health visitor will support the client through a holding relationship until the other appropriate professionals can accept the referral. From a literature review, helping styles and holding relationships provide a 'listening to' opportunity, a 'being there for' a

The base for exposure treatment in agoraphobia: some indicators for nurse therapists and community psychiatric nurses.

This study examines, using a randomised control trial, the question of the optimum base for exposure treatment with agoraphobic clients. The results have relevance for community psychiatric nurses and nurse behaviour therapists working with such problems and indeed for other behavioural practitioners. While the results confirm the already extensive evidence for the efficacy of exposure in vivo for agoraphobic clients, the results show that in general there is no difference between outcome of treatment delivered from the patient's own home and the out-patient clinic. There are, however, a small

Prevalence of oral health problems in a Norwegian older adult population: The HUNT Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that oral health problems are common among older adults. However, population estimates of oral health problems are largely restricted to individual subgroups. Thus, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of oral health problems in an older adult population comprised of both community dwellers and nursing home residents, and to assess differences between sexes, age groups, and these living situations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from HUNT4 Trondheim 70 + , a part of the fourth Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4), Norway. Oral health was assessed using the Rev

Current and future models for nursing e-journals: making the most of the Web's potential.

We are presently witnessing an increasing number of nursing, medical and health-related electronic journals (e-journals) being made available on the World Wide Web, a minority of which are specifically devoted to informatics. We would expect, given the potential of interacting multimedia and computer-mediated communications (i.e. telematics), to also see an increasing diversity of models, but this is not currently the case. Following a brief discussion of some of the issues relevant to electronic publications, the authors present a taxonomy of current nursing e-journal models, including discus

Implementation evaluation of an evidence-informed hospital inpatient nursing framework (HIRAID® Inpatient): a protocol for a stepped-wedge cluster RCT.

BACKGROUND: Preventable adverse events in Australian hospitals are a significant safety issue, causing harm, death and increased healthcare costs. Many stem from inadequate recognition of, or response to, clinical deterioration by nurses that suggest gaps in current nursing practice frameworks. Responding to health sector demand, this study will adapt the evidence-informed HIRAID® nursing framework for use in hospital inpatient settings, implement and evaluate the standardised HIRAID® Inpatient framework to improve the quality and safety of inpatient hospital care. METHODS: HIRAID® will be ad

Incontinence: enhancing care in women's prisons.

BACKGROUND: There is no evidence on the prevalence of urinary and faecal incontinence symptoms in women prisoners. AIM: To explore the extent and management of bladder and bowel symptoms to inform prison health services and prison nursing practice. METHOD: An anonymous self-report questionnaire tailored to low levels of English literacy, and administered in one women's prison. RESULTS: Women prisons have a higher reported prevalence of urinary and faecal incontinence, constipation and nocturnal enuresis than community populations; this is an unrecognised health problem. CONCLUSION: Prison

Chronic oedema: a prevalent health care problem for UK health services.

Chronic oedema (CO) is a major clinical problem worldwide, which has many important secondary consequences for health, activity and participation. Effective treatment planning and organisation of services is dependent on an understanding of the condition and its epidemiology. This cross-sectional study was designed to estimate the point prevalence of CO within the health services of one UK urban population and to determine the proportions that have concurrent leg ulceration. Patients with CO in all anatomic sites were ascertained by health care professionals in one acute and one community hosp

"If your CD4 count lowers, that is when you are similar to a person that is non-existent" A qualitative exploration of perceptions around advanced HIV disease in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread availability and differentiated delivery of antiretroviral treatment (ART), advanced HIV disease (AHD) remains prevalent, with high mortality risk. In South Africa, we assessed perceptions about the meaning of AHD and social and behavioural factors influencing AHD development. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 PWH screened for AHD during a community-based tuberculosis triage trial, and five stakeholders involved in policy-making or implementation of AHD-related programmes. Two focus group discussions were conducted with seven study nurses and t

Implementing a Person-Centred Lifestyle Programme in a Mental Health Member Organisation: Implications for Psychiatric Nursing.

People with mental disorders often experience unmet physical, psychological, and social health needs, contributing to reduced life expectancy. Although lifestyle programmes can promote health and wellbeing, their implementation within non-profit mental health member organisations remains limited. This qualitative descriptive study, reported according to COREQ guidelines, explored experiences of implementing a person-centred lifestyle programme within a member organisation and its potential contribution to health-promoting and recovery-oriented support. Participants took part across two program
