Cerebral Ischemic Complications After Surgical Revascularization for Moyamoya Disease: Risk Factors and Development of a Predictive Model Based on Preoperative Nutritional Blood Parameters.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebral ischemic complications are common after revascularization in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). Risk factors from specific laboratory variables have only been assessed by limited research. This study was to investigate the association between postoperative cerebral ischemia and nutritional blood parameters and examine predictive values of such risk factors in adults. METHODS: Preoperative demographics and nutritional blood parameters of patients with MMD who received revascularization at our institution from 2012 to 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Univariate analys

What Is the Effect of Treating Mandibular Fractures on Weight and Prealbumin?

PURPOSE: Fracture healing relies on the body to coordinate an inflammatory and anabolic reaction to re-establish osseous union. Although many factors affect this process or even disrupt it, the role of the body's nutritional reserves is not well understood. The purposes of this study were to describe the weight changes and to identify trends in laboratory values commonly used in nutritional assessment during mandibular fracture treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was designed. The study cohort included patients who sustained a mandibular fracture from September 1, 201

Machine learning-based prediction of 1-year mortality using nutritional and inflammatory factors for type A acute aortic dissection with malperfusion.

BACKGROUND: Acute aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition, and malperfusion significantly exacerbates the prognosis of patients diagnosed with type A Acute aortic dissection (ATAAD). Current risk assessment tools often fail to consider the impact of nutritional and inflammatory factors, limiting their predictive accuracy. The aim of this study was to develop a machine learning model that integrates nutritional and inflammatory indices to predict 1-year mortality in ATAAD patients with malperfusion. METHODS: This retrospective study included 433 ATAAD patients with malperfusion from

Finger millet and soybean as functional ingredients in next-generation fermented foods: a review of nutritional, technological, and health-promoting perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: The ever-increasing global malnutrition, environmental degradation, and food insecurity challenges have intensified interest in sustainable food systems and underutilized crops. Fermentation improves the nutritional quality, digestibility, shelf life, and sensory attributes of plant-based foods. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana) and soybean (Glycine max) are promising for functional food development due to their complementary nutrient profiles. Finger millet is rich in minerals, fibre, and polyphenols, while soybean provides high-quality protein and bioactive compounds. Their syn

From waste to nutrition: valorization strategies for surplus and ugly produce within the Food Use and Waste Hierarchy.

Fruit and vegetables (F&Vs) account for approximately 50% of global food loss and waste (FLW). This represents an environmental and economic burden, as well as a significant, yet often overlooked concern for human nutrition. At the farm level, surplus (products for which there is no buyer) and "ugly produce" (products rejected for failing aesthetic standards) are often discarded or diverted for low value uses, such as composting or animal feed, despite retaining a good nutritional and functional quality. Current valorization frameworks, including the EU Food Use and Waste Hierarchy (FUWH), pri

Dexamethasone may affect the occurrence of parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis in preterm neonates.

INTRODUCTION: Glucocorticoids are currently used for the co-therapeutic management of autoimmune hepatitis and some cholestatic diseases. Thus far, we do not know the efficacy of glucocorticoids in the treatment of parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis. We aimed to analyze whether the administration of late postnatal dexamethasone for treating bronchopulmonary dysplasia influence the occurrence of parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis in preterm neonates. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted for 78 preterm neonates without major anomalies (gestational age was <30 weeks, an

Body composition in 13-year-old adolescents with abdominal obesity, depending on the BMI value.

BACKGROUND: Excessive adipocyte growth during the pubertal transition predisposes to the development and persistence of obesity in adulthood. Visceral accumulation of body fat is particularly disadvantageous when it is correlated with insulin resistance, secondary hyperinsulinaemia, dysglicaemia, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to conduct a nutritional status assessment and body composition analysis in 13-year-old adolescents of both genders with visceral fat accumulation (WC ≥ 90th percentile) and different BMI values. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The evaluation

The Update of the Italian Food Composition Database of Gluten-Free Products and Its Application in Food-Based Dietary Guidelines Menus.

Complete food composition databases (FCDBs) on gluten-free (GF) foods are needed to assess the nutrient intakes of celiac disease patients. The aim of the present work was to update the previously developed version of the Italian GF-FCDB and to apply it to a theoretical GF diet. The updated GF-FCDB includes the composition of 108 GF cereal-based foods, as sold, in terms of energy and macro- and micro-nutrients, imputed using food label information combined with the standard recipe approach. Three scenarios (i.e., refined, mixed, and wholegrain cereals) of the weekly guideline menu for the gene

Zinc in soils, crops, and meals in the Niger Inland Delta, Mali.

Zinc deficiency is a problem in developing countries and not least so in Africa. This concerns both agriculture and human food provision. Zinc deficiency in soils may severely decrease yields, whereas insufficient zinc in food intake primarily affects the immune defense, notably in children. The present investigation concerned zinc availability in soils, crops, and food in the Niger inland delta in Mali. Agricultural soils are largely deficient in plant-available zinc, however, soils in close vicinity to habitation show elevated zinc concentrations. The zinc concentrations in crops are low; in

Enteral nutrition by a forward surgical team in Afghanistan.

OBJECTIVES: The modern practice of trauma surgery is a global physiologic approach to caring for the injured patient. Included in that approach is consideration of the traumatized patient's nutritional needs and implementing early enteral feeding. This is routine practice in the United States but logistically impractical when using commercial enteral feeding formulas in the austere environment of a Forward Operating Base in Afghanistan. METHODS: At a Forward Operating Base in southern Afghanistan, injured patients who were not expected to be taking a regular diet by 72 hours after injury are

Plant sources of provitamin A and human nutriture.

Hypovitaminosis A is a problem in many parts of the developing world. Beyond the stop-gap measures of capsule distribution and food fortification, increased consumption of accessible sources of vitamin A, specifically of the carotenoid provitamin A in yellow, orange, and green plants, has been promoted as the sustainable, long-term solution. However, a search of the available literature reveals few examples of human studies to support the effectiveness of this solution. Evidence from feeding studies shows an almost universally poorer uptake of intact carotenoids from plant sources as opposed t

Measurement of mid-arm circumference as a starting point for nutritional assessment of patients with decompensated cirrhosis: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The mid-arm circumference (MAC) is an accessible, quick, and inexpensive measurement, which can be performed at the bedside only with a measuring tape. In this sense, the present study aims to suggest MAC cut-off values to assess the nutritional status and its association with mortality of hospitalised patients with decompensated cirrhosis. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed with decompensated cirrhotic patients. Nutritional status was assessed by MAC and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). Considering the SGA as the reference standard and based on receiver operatin

Dynamic association of serum albumin changes with inflammation, nutritional status and clinical outcomes: a secondary analysis of a large prospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Serum albumin (ALB) has traditionally been regarded as a marker of nutritional status. However, recent studies suggest its changes are closely linked to inflammation, metabolic dysregulation, and disease severity, limiting its role as a sole indicator of nutritional status. Yet, clinical practice continues to rely on ALB to monitor nutritional interventions, with a paucity of high-quality evidence on its dynamic associations with clinical outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the comprehensive associations of ALB dynamics with inflammation, nutritional status, and clinical outc

Assessing malnutrition in gastric carcinoma: bioelectrical impedance or clinical impression?

The value of bioelectrical impedance (BI) as an index of body composition was assessed in 32 patients with gastric carcinoma, 20 with advanced disease. Bioelectrical impedance was compared with standard nutritional parameters: weight, body mass index (BMI), albumin, transferrin and triceps skinfold thickness. There was no correlation between BI and these parameters with the exception of weight and BMI in the male patients. Clinical assessment of nutrition on the other hand correlated well with the standard parameters. Although BI may be a useful adjunct to the routine assessment of nutritional

Wasting syndrome: nutritional support in HIV infection.

Malnutrition and wasting are common in patients with HIV infection. Nutritional needs vary with the stage of HIV disease. Severe weight loss is associated with increased mortality in patients with AIDS and is multifactorial in development. Possible causes of weight loss include decreased food intake due to oral or GI pathology or anorexia, nutrient malabsorption, and systemic infections. Severe malabsorption is limited to patients with advanced HIV disease with CD4+ cell counts < 100 and usually < 50 cells/microliters. The spectrum of GI pathogens continues to broaden.
