OBJECTIVE: Betel quid and areca nut chewing is widely prevalent in many parts of Asia and Asian migrant communities in the world. Due to the carcinogenicity associated with quid and areca nut we developed an interest to study the prevalence of quid induced oral lichenoid reactions in the population of western India.
METHODS: A total population of 4981 males and females was screened for tobacco use and the prevalence of lesion in 86 quid users was seen. The lesions which met the selection criteria of oral lichenoid reaction were identified.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is an oral precancerous disorder associated with the habit of areca nut chewing. MiR-10b has been shown to be upregulated in the oral cancer cells and induced by Twist. CONTEXT: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is strongly associated with areca nut usage; the existence of OSF in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is an indicator of areca nut-induced carcinogenesis. As areca nut follows a discrete molecular path for oral carcinogenesis, this could be the basis why OSCC patients with OSF are different and are currently projected to constitute a distinct clinicopathologic entity.

OBJECTIVES: To assess oncologic outcomes in patients undergoing percutaneous management for upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma (UUT-TCC) of the renal cavities.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of data for patients who underwent percutaneous conservative surgery for a UUT-TCC between 1989 and 2005: sex; age at diagnosis; mode of diagnosis; smoking; history of bladder cancer; type of surgery; complications; tumour site, size, stage and grade, and recurrence and progression. Fresh walnuts are highly perishable after harvest. This work explored hurdle treatment of chlorine dioxide (ClO₂), indirect plasma-processed air (IPPA), and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on fresh walnuts with/without husk. Combining IPPA with 10 mg L-1 ClO₂ reduced mold counts by up to 2.06 log CFU g-1 and decreased ClO₂ usage by 80% compared to 50 mg L-1 ClO₂ alone. Subsequent integration with active or passive MAP extended shelf life from 60 to 120 days.
