Prevalence and associated factors of suspected occupational skin diseases among restaurant workers in peninsular Malaysia: secondary data analysis of Registry for Occupational Disease Screening (RODS).

OBJECTIVES: Occupational skin diseases (OSDs) pose significant risks to the health and well-being of restaurant workers. However, there is presently limited evidence on the burden and determinants of OSDs among this occupational group. This research aims to estimate the prevalence and associated factors of suspected OSDs among restaurant workers in Peninsular Malaysia. DESIGN: A secondary data analysis of the 2023 Registry of Occupational Disease Screening (RODS) was performed. The RODS survey tool, which included the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire, a symptoms checklist and items on w

Compensation status as a predictor of outcome in nonsurgically treated low back injury.

Whether the compensation status of patients injured in occupational accidents influences treatment outcome remains a controversial issue. This article describes the treatment outcome status of compensated versus noncompensated patients who received comprehensive functional restoration treatment of low back pain in a hospital-based, interdisciplinary, occupational rehabilitation and pain management program. Results of this investigation revealed treatment outcome differences between the two groups in two of three measures at discharge (subjective pain intensity and return-to-work), and outcome

The relationship between occupation and dry eye.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental factors play an important aetiological role in dry eye. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between types of occupation and symptomatic dry eye. METHODS: 40,501 employed people working ≥8 h a week were included from the population-based Lifelines cohort in the Netherlands. Logistic regression was used to determine the association between symptomatic dry eye (assessed by the WHS questionnaire) and occupation (using the ISCO-08 classification system). RESULTS: After correction for age and sex, the professionals (e.g. legal, health, and business

The Occupational Burden of Nonmalignant Respiratory Diseases. An Official American Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society Statement.

Rationale: Workplace inhalational hazards remain common worldwide, even though they are ameliorable. Previous American Thoracic Society documents have assessed the contribution of workplace exposures to asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease on a population level, but not to other chronic respiratory diseases. The goal of this document is to report an in-depth literature review and data synthesis of the occupational contribution to the burden of the major nonmalignant respiratory diseases, including airway diseases; interstitial fibrosis; hypersensitivity pneumonitis; other noninfect

Probabilistic health risk assessment of respirable dust exposure among stone carvers in Thailand using average daily dose and Monte Carlo simulation.

Respirable dust (RD) exposure represents a significant occupational health concern in stone processing settings, particularly among stone carvers who are at elevated risk due to high levels of dust generation. Prolonged exposure to RD is associated with serious adverse health outcomes, including lung cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the probabilistic risk associated with RD exposure using Monte Carlo simulation and to estimate the Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) among stone carvers. A cross-sectional study was conducted across five occupational categories: mining, cutting, splittin

Exploring the impact of occupational factors on low back pain in ride-sharing motorbike drivers in Bangladesh: A comprehensive cross-sectional analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Low back pain (LBP) is a major global public health issue, prevalent among various occupational groups worldwide. However, existing studies have predominantly focused on sedentary workers in developed nations, leaving a gap in understanding LBP prevalence and associated factors among occupational cohorts in low- and middle-income countries like Bangladesh. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and occupational factors contributing to LBP among ride-sharing motorbike drivers (RSMD) in Bangladesh. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Dhaka city from May 20 to Augu…

Risk of seropositivity to Coxiella burnetii in humans living in areas with endemically infected cattle: No way for specific prevention.

Q fever, a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, is endemic among cattle in Western France. However, studies assessing the risk of human infection in such areas are lacking to date, while they may provide information about key specific preventive actions which could be advised to the human populations living with or close to cattle. Therefore, we conducted a cross-sectional study in two departments of Western France during the 2017/18 winter in order to explore possible risk factors for seropositivity among two distinct populations, i) an occupational risk group, that is, the cattle fa

Using appreciative inquiry to explore and enhance perceptions of empowerment for those experiencing homelessness: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals experiencing homelessness endure occupational injustices in the form of marginalization and deprivation at higher rates than their counterparts who are not experiencing homelessness. This population's expressed interests, needs, and desires are frequently ignored or unsolicited by a system of care that continues to exercise power over this fragile and underserved group. Marginalization and deprivation can lead to disempowerment. Few studies have been conducted that explore the perceptions of empowerment by those experiencing homelessness. Providing a "space" for the voi
