PURPOSE: To report the surgical success of vitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade in the treatment of retinal detachment associated with giant retinal tears due to various factors.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 21 eyes of 21 patients with retinal tears 90 degrees or greater that underwent vitrectomy, with injection of perfluorocarbon liquids and silicone oil tamponade. Hepatoprotective activity of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) essential oil (FEO) was studied using carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) induced liver injury model in rats. The hepatotoxicity produced by acute CCl(4) administration was found to be inhibited by FEO with evidence of decreased levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and bilirubin. The results of this study indicate that FEO has a potent hepatoprotective action against CCl(4)-induced hepatic damage in rats.

The medicinal properties of seed oil of Pongamia glabra are well known in traditional Indian medicine. It has antimicrobial activity against several organisms. It is used in the treatment of herpes and scabies and, systemically, it is also used in the treatment of dyspepsia with sluggish liver. We report the annual results of patch testing with lavender oil for a 9-year period from 1990 to 1998 in Japan. Using Finn Chambers and Scanpor tape, we performed 2-day closed patch testing with lavender oil 20% pet. on the upper back of each patient suspected of having cosmetic contact dermatitis. We compared the frequency of positive patch tests to lavender oil each year with those to other fragrances. We diagnosed contact allergy when patch test reactions were + or <+ at 1 day after removal. OBJECTIVE: To determine the functional and anatomic results of vitrectomy with silicone oil injection in complicated retinal detachments in children.
DESIGN: A retrospective review of all records of children aged 15 years or younger who underwent vitrectomy with silicone oil injection between 1985 and 1994 in the Goldschleger eye institute.

OBJECTIVE: Researching the effect of turmeric volatile oil on functions of the respiratory tract.
METHOD: The action of turmeric volatile oil on sputum removing, cough and asthma relieving was observed by vapour inhaling.
RESULT: The volatile oil is significantly active in removing sputum, relieving cough and preventing asthma.
CONCLUSION: Turmeric volatile oil may be an efficacious drug for the treatment of respiratory diseases.

PURPOSE: We studied the results and complications of silicone oil removal applying basic criteria for the selection of eyes.
METHODS: The criteria for oil removal: 1. Completely attached retina for at least 4 weeks, 2. Absence of tractions and active proliferations, 3. Preoperative vision > 0.01. The oil was removed from 90 of 261 oil filled eyes (removal rate: 34.5%). 83 eyes were included in the further study.
