The basal turning point of optic radiation (bTPOR): The location of optic radiation in the cerebral basal surface.

BACKGROUNDS: Optic radiation protection is crucial in the basal temporal approach to the mesial temporal lobe. Clear description of the optic radiation in the basal brain surface is lacking. Our aim is to describe the anatomy of optic radiation in the basal cerebral surface and define safety zone of basal temporal approach avoiding of optic radiation injury. METHODS: Five brain specimens (10 hemispheres) were dissected using Klingler method to observe the course of the optic radiation. Diffusion tensor imaging data of 25 volunteers were used to verify the fiber dissection results. The relatio

Ultrathin side-viewing needle probe for optical coherence tomography.

We present the smallest reported side-viewing needle probe for optical coherence tomography (OCT). Design, fabrication, optical characterization, and initial application of a 30-gauge (outer diameter 0.31 mm) needle probe are demonstrated. Extreme miniaturization is achieved by using a simple all-fiber probe design incorporating an angle-polished and reflection-coated fiber-tip beam deflector. When inserted into biological tissue, aqueous interstitial fluids reduce the probe's inherent astigmatism ratio to 1.8, resulting in a working distance of 300 μm and a depth-of-field of 550 μm with beam

[Particular aspects of the arterial blood supply of the optic radiations].

The purpose of this study was to point out the arterial branches that are supplying the optic radiations. The study was carried out on 100 human brains, fixed in formaldehid 10% and dissected under the surgical microscope; 20 of them were at first injected with colored nitrolac. It were observed the origin, traject, relationships and distribution of the arterial branches which supply this optic fibers. The data obtained reveal that: the anterior segment of the optic radiations receives branches from the anterior choroidal artery (100%), middle cerebral artery (83%), thalamogeniculate arteries

Myelinated retinal nerve fibers.

In a series of 3,968 consecutive autopsies, myelinated nerve fibers of the retina were presented in 39 (0.98%) cases and bilateral in three (7.7%) affected cases; thus, 42 (0.54%) of the 7,936 eyes examined were affected. Myelinated nerve fiber lesions appeared as white or gray-white striated patches corresponding in shape to the distribution of retinal nerve fibers and demonstrated frayed borders. Myelinated retinal nerve fibers were continuous with the optic nerve head in 14 (33%) and discontinuous with the optic nerve head in 28 (66%) affected eyes. By light microscopy and electron microsco

The structural basis of Felice Fontana's spiral bands and their relationship to nerve injury.

In 1779, Felice Fontana, using a six-power hand-held magnifying lens, described what appeared to be spiral bands surrounding the peripheral nerve. He hypothesized that these bands were due to an optical illusion related to the underlying undulations of the individual nerve fibers, which he was the first to observe with an early microscope. The present study examines the historical basis of Fontana's work, confirms with intrafascicular dissection that the bands are an illusion created by unstretched nerve fibers, and relates their clinical disappearance to current concepts of the pathophysiolog

Optic disc morphology in diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a systemic disease affecting multiple tissues throughout the body. This study was performed to evaluate intravitally the diabetic changes of the optic disc. METHODS: Color photographs of 115 eyes with varying severity of diabetic retinopathy and of 29 normal eyes were morphometrically examined. RESULTS: We found that the size and shape of the optic disc, the neuroretinal rim and the parapapillary atrophy did not differ significantly between the diabetic eyes and the normal eyes. These variables were independent of the degree of diabetic retinopathy. There was

Optic disk evaluation and utility of high-tech devices in the assessment of glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Every clinician has at one time or another examined a patient who was misdiagnosed as having glaucoma or whose diagnosis of glaucoma was missed. Although glaucoma can exist with normal intraocular pressures, clinicians often rely on the presence of visual-field defects and the degree of optic disk cupping to direct care. However, assessment of cupping is but one small part of optic disk evaluation in glaucoma, and other features of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer must be closely inspected to help diagnose borderline cases. In addition, glaucoma can exist without

Mouse mtDNA mutant model of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy.

An animal model of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) was produced by introducing the human optic atrophy mtDNA ND6 P25L mutation into the mouse. Mice with this mutation exhibited reduction in retinal function by elecroretinogram (ERG), age-related decline in central smaller caliber optic nerve fibers with sparing of larger peripheral fibers, neuronal accumulation of abnormal mitochondria, axonal swelling, and demyelination. Mitochondrial analysis revealed partial complex I and respiration defects and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, whereas synaptosome analysis reveal

DSCAM is differentially patterned along the optic axon pathway in the developing Xenopus visual system and guides axon termination at the target.

BACKGROUND: The Xenopus retinotectal circuit is organized topographically, where the dorsal-ventral axis of the retina maps respectively on to the ventral-dorsal axis of the tectum; axons from the nasal-temporal axis of the retina project respectively to the caudal-rostral axis of the tectum. Studies throughout the last two decades have shown that mechanisms involving molecular recognition of proper termination domains are at work guiding topographic organization. Such studies have shown that graded distribution of molecular cues is important for topographic mapping. However, the complement of

FBG and BOTDA Based Monitoring of Mine Pressure Under Remaining Coal Pillars Using Physical Modeling.

Strong mine pressure often emerges when the working face of the lower coal seam in a closely spaced coal seam system passes through the remaining coal pillar in the overlying goaf. This study investigates the law of overburden movement and the manifestation of mine pressure during mining under the remaining coal pillar. A physical model measuring 2.5 × 0.2 × 1.503 m is constructed. Fiber Bragg grating sensing technology (FBG) and Brillouin optical time domain analysis technology (BOTDA) are employed in the physical model experiment to monitor the internal strain of the overlying rock as the wo

Optrode-Assisted Multiparametric Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for the Analysis of Liquids.

We demonstrate a sensing scheme for liquid analytes that integrates multiple optical fiber sensors in a near-infrared spectrometer. With a simple optofluidic method, a broadband radiation is encoded in a time-domain interferogram and distributed to different sensing units that interrogate the sample simultaneously; the spectral readout of each unit is extracted from its output signal by a Fourier transform routine. The proposed method allows performing a multiparametric analysis of liquid samples in a compact setup where the radiation source, measurement units, and spectral readout are all int

Phosphotungstate Acid Doped Polyanilines Nanorods for in situ NIR-II Photothermal Therapy of Orthotopic Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Rabbit.

INTRODUCTION: Second near-infrared photothermal therapy (NIR-II PTT) has become a promising strategy for treating cancer in terms of safety and potency. However, the application of NIR-II PTT was limited in the treatment of deep-buried solid tumors due to the low dose of NIR-II absorption nanomaterials and the inadequate laser energy in the deep tumor. METHODS: Herein, the authors report the engineering of NIR-II absorbing polyaniline nanorods, termed HPW@PANI Nanorods, for in situ NIR-II PTT based on optical fibers transmission of laser power and transarterial infusion for the treatment of o…

Efficient Polarization-Entangled Photon-Pair Generation by a Fiber-In-Line van der Waals Material.

The recent emergence of van der Waals (vdW) materials with exceptional optical nonlinearity has driven advances in next-generation nonlinear photonic devices beyond classical optics. While integrating these materials into fiber-optic platforms offers unprecedented functionalities in quantum systems, realizing telecom-band in-line photon-pair sources based on highly nonlinear vdW materials remains challenging. Here, we report photon-pair generation centered at telecom wavelength via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a fiber-integrated device incorporating a ferroelectric vdW crystal, Sn

Dispersion compensation of four-channel high-speed IMDD data using slow-light in a silicon nitride chip.

Transmission of high-speed optical data over fiber is inherently limited by optical attenuation and chromatic dispersion, with dispersion impairments becoming increasingly critical as data rates scale and symbol durations shorten. One of the practical solutions is to utilize an integrated photonic device that produces dispersion with the same magnitude but opposite sign, so that net zero aggregate dispersion is achieved in the link. In this work, we demonstrate dispersion compensation of 30 Gb/s NRZ data using an integrated silicon nitride (SiN) grating-based device. The SiN Bragg grating oper
