To clarify effects of interleukin-1 on sympathetic nerve activity, norepinephrine turnover in various organs was assessed in rats after intraperitoneal injection of recombinant human interleukin-1 beta. In 1980, it was observed in a child with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) that intravenous administration of pooled human immunoglobulin-G (IVIG) was followed by a rapid increase of the platelet count. In order to elucidate a possible role of hypercoagulability leading to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in the pathogenesis of multiple organ failure (MOF), unfractionated heparin and the related agents were administered to septic rabbits which manifest DIC and MOF. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of glucocorticoid treatment on the microfilament structure of cultured human trabecular meshwork cells. Topical or systemic administration of glucocorticoids can lead to the development of ocular hypertension and to the development of vision loss, which is clinically similar to primary open angle glaucoma. However, the mechanism(s) by which glucocorticoids cause ocular hypertension is not well defined. Alterations in the trabecular meshwork, the site of drainage of aqueous humor from the eye, have been linked to the development of ocular hypertension.
