The mesenteric panniculitis is a rare form of inflammation that mainly involves the mesenteric adipose tissue. The etiology remains unknown and the disease has been associated with various conditions such as cancer, abdominal trauma, previous surgery, autoimmune diseases and obesity. Mesenteric panniculitis can be divided into two main groups: the mesenteric panniculitis with only the inflammation and degeneration of the mesenteric fat, and the retractile panniculitis, mainly fibrotic, with retraction of the surrounding structures. From a radiological point of view, there are two main signs: t…

BACKGROUND: Panniculitis occurring in dermatomyositis is uncommon, with only a few cases described in the literature, most of them as case reports.
OBJECTIVE: This report describes the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical findings in a series of 18 patients with panniculitis associated with dermatomyositis.
METHODS: In each patient, we collected the clinical data of the cutaneous lesions as well as the characteristic clinical and laboratory findings. A series of histopathologic findings was recorded in the biopsy of each patient. A panel of antibodies was used in some cases to investi…

Vemurafenib is increasingly being used to treat nonmelanoma tumors that are positive for the BRAF V600E mutation. We report three children who presented with panniculitis induced by vemurafenib while undergoing treatment for central nervous system tumors and review the literature.

Gouty panniculitis is caused by the deposition of urate crystals in the subcutaneous tissue, accompanied by a lobular panniculitis. It presents as subcutaneous nodules, most commonly located on the lower extremities. Being an unusual clinical presentation of gout, the sonographic findings of gouty panniculitis have been scarcely described in the literature. Our report describes the ultrasound features we found in a case of gouty panniculitis and the usefulness of this technique for diagnosis and monitoring of this disease.

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare condition that historically has been associated with the presence of malignancy. Paraneoplastic phenomena in general regress with cure and in most cases with treatment of the cancer. This study was undertaken to determine whether MP regressed with cancer treatment and cure.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of a database of all patients with MP confirmed on CT between 2003 and August 2015 at Christchurch Hospital. Patients were categorized as having malignant or non-malignant disease, and follow-up scans were assessed for remission of …

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasitic cutaneous infection caused by Leishmania parasite. The histopathology is usually granulomatous in nature.
AIMS: The aim of the present study is to elucidate the histology of CL and evaluate the presence and the frequency of panniculitis among the affected patients.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Case series interventional study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients with CL were diagnosed clinically between December-2012 and May-2013. Diagnostic confirmation established by smears, culture, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The histopath…

Mesenteric panniculitis is an uncommon clinical entity which sometimes may be associated with hematologic, gastrointestinal and urological neoplasms. The diagnostic procedure ofchoice is based on obtaining a tissue sample for histopathological study usually through apercutaneous procedure. Treatment is indicated in symptomatic cases.

Pancreatic panniculitis is an uncommon condition that can occur in association with pancreatic disease. Most of the cases reported to date were associated with acute or chronic pancreatitis and pancreas cancer. Recently, development has been described in kidney transplant patients and secondarily to allograft pancreatitis in a pancreas-kidney transplant recipient. Both findings suggest that immunological processes may be involved in the pathogenesis of this entity. We report for the first time a case of acute pancreatitis associated with pancreatic panniculitis in a patient who underwent a liv…

Neutrophilic panniculitis is a rare adverse effect of therapy with selective BRAF inhibitors. We report a case of neutrophilic panniculitis in a 15-year-old girl receiving treatment with vemurafenib for a brainstem glioma. Clinicians should be aware of this rare but important side effect of vemurafenib. This is the first report of neutrophilic panniculitis in a child treated with vemurafenib.

Panniculitis is a rare complication of BRAF inhibitor therapy that is used to treat patients with BRAF-mutated metastatic melanoma. We present a clinicopathologic review of 9 patients who developed panniculitis while on BRAF inhibitor therapy. In 13% of patients on vemurafenib, 3% of patients on dabrafenib and 10% on combination of dabrafenib + trametinib, tender erythematous nodular lesions of panniculitis appeared on legs, arms and trunk. Histological evaluation of 8 biopsies from 7 patients showed predominantly neutrophilic infiltrate in 4, lymphocytic in 1, and mixed in 3. Lesions with neu…

An aquarium-maintained male California moray Gymnothorax mordax had a symmetrical enlargement of the soft tissues of the head dorsal to the … s never determined. This paper describes the first documented case of localized xanthogranulomatous panniculitis in a California moray and demonstrates the need for additional research on specific dietary requirements, species-specific physiological differences, and lesions involving the adipose tissue of morays in comparison with other teleost species.

Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare condition affecting the mesentery of the small bowel and/or colon. Obtaining a diagnosis is dependent on radiological and histological findings. With the increasing use of abdominal CT, more cases of MP will be discovered. We report a case of MP accidentally found at CT in a 64 year-old woman who was evaluated for upper abdominal discomfort. Percutaneous ultrasonography guided biopsy secured the diagnosis. There is no consensus on the treatment and management of MP. An approach guided by the patient's symptoms seems suitable.

BACKGROUND: Clinical and histologic diagnosis of panniculitis may be difficult. The patients usually present with erythematous subcutaneous nodules with or without additional symptoms. If a skin biopsy does not include enough subcutaneous fat, histopathologic assessment is limited and the correct diagnosis may be delayed and require further sampling.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: To illustrate the difficulties in the diagnosis of panniculitis, we performed a retrospective examination of four patients with different forms of panniculitis.
RESULTS: In two patients with subcutaneous panniculitis-like T…

In May, 2003, a 28-year-old female presented with large non-healing ulcers on face, trunk and limbs covered with black hemorrhagic crust. There were no other systemic manifestations. Diagnosis of lupus panniculitis was considered on clinical and histopathological grounds. The lesions healed completely, with scarring, with systemic corticosteroid, hydroxychloroquine and topical 2% mupirocin. She came again in November, 2005, with malar rash, joint pain, scarring alopecia of the scalp and albuminuria. Her ANA, AntidsDNA came positive and diagnosed as having systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Sh…

Panniculitis is an uncommon condition in childhood and may prove difficult to diagnose both clinically and histologically. The clinical spectrum is similar to that in adults and has been associated with many primary diseases. Noninfectious causes are less common in children than in adults. The pathogenesis remains uncertain in a significant number of children. In some it may be a malignant, unremitting disease which can be fatal. We present a boy aged 13 years with panniculitis of the right foot as presenting sign for the ultimate diagnosis myelodysplasia-acute myeloid leukemia. To our knowled…
