The objective is to identify the pathogenesis of each autonomic manifestation in cluster headache (CH). Through a deductive statistics method (factor analysis) we analysed the type of autonomic symptoms reported by 157 CH patients. Three principal components were identified in the analysis: parasympathetic activation (lacrimation, conjunctival injection and rhinorrhoea), sympathetic defect (miosis and ptosis) and parasympathetic mediated effect (nasal congestion, eyelid oedema and forehead sweating). This study explored the relationship between the function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and glossodynia. The function of the ANS was … plaints in patients with glossodynia, had resulted from a pronounced reduction in activities of the parasympathetic nervous system, but not from an excessive increase in activities of the sympathetic nervous system. Eosinophils affect nerve structure and function in organs such as lungs and skin, which contributes to disease pathogenesis. We have developed methods for culturing primary sensory and parasympathetic neurons in multiple species and have refined these techniques for coculture with eosinophils. Eosinophil-nerve coculture has been an essential tool for testing interactions between these cell types. Here we describe methods for coculturing primary parasympathetic ganglia, vagal sensory nerves, and dorsal root sensory nerves with eosinophils.
