Imported infectious diseases and surveillance in Japan.

Surveillance of imported infectious diseases is important because of the need for early detection of outbreaks of international concern as w … uired immunodeficiency syndrome, typhoid fever, dengue fever, hepatitis A, giardiasis, cholera, and paratyphoid fever. The annual trends of these diseases always fluctuated but not every change was investigated. The study reveals that the situation of imported infectious diseases can be identified in the current Japanese surveillance system with epidemiologic featu …

[Comparison of the Gruber-Widal and ELISA technics used to study Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi infections in patients].

In this study, antibody levels were determined against the agents of typhoid and paratyphoid fever in 168 patient's sera and 40 healthy control sera by Gruber-Widal and ELISA techniques. We compared the results of these two techniques, and discussed. The needed antigens for both techniques were prepared from the local strains of the agents of these infections which were isolated in our laboratory. The widal's tube agglutination test was carried out by classical method, and the ELISA technique was done by the method of Woller et al. As a result, we found that the titers obtained by ELISA were a…

Dosage of chloramphenicol in typhoid and paratyphoid in children.

Over a period of 12 years, 109 children with salmonella enteric fever were treated with chloramphenicol: 65 children were given the drug at 50 mg/kg/24 h (Group A) and 44 received 100 mg/kg/24 h (Group B). Treatment failed in 63% with the lower dose and in 24% of children treated with the higher dose (P less than 0.001). In the children who received only chloramphenicol, the higher dose produced a clinical response in 5.4 (1.8) (mean (S.D.] days compared with 7 (2.6) days with the lower dose (P less than 0.01). Chloramphenicol in an initial dose of 100 mg/kg/24 h is recommended in the treatmen

Enteric fever in a British soldier from Sierra Leone.

Enteric fever (typhoid and paratyphoid) remains a threat to British troops overseas and causes significant morbidity and mortality. We report the case of a soldier who developed typhoid despite appropriate vaccination and field hygiene measures, which began 23 days after returning from a deployment in Sierra Leone. The incubation period was longer than average, symptoms started 2 days after stopping doxycycline for malaria chemoprophylaxis and initial blood cultures were negative. The Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi eventually isolated was resistant to amoxicillin, co-amoxiclav, co-trimoxazo

Establishment of two Hypotheses for Gut Bacterial Alteration Process for Minimizing the Intestinal Communicable Diseases.

Intestinal communicable diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, nausea, vomiting, cholera, typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, botulism, gastroenteritis, etc., are caused by different microbes. Intestinal microbial ecology is the most mysterious and complex environment for microbes. Bacteriophages are the dominant viruses in the intestinal microbiota. It is well established that gut microbial composition directly affects human health. Microbes use the gastrointestinal tract as niches there some factors or theories exist such as dietary, quorum sensing, and biosignaling, including biomass and biofilm …

[Typhoid fever in Lebanon: epidemiological study].

Typhoid fever is a major public health problem, especially in developing countries. From 2000 through 2008, the infectious disease surveillance unit at the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health received 6148 reports of typhoid cases. A case is considered positive for typhoid or paratyphoid fever when fever of at least 38 degrees C persists for three days, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi or Paratyphi is isolated from blood, bone marrow, or stool. Statistical analysis was performed with STATA v.10 software. The most cases were recorded in 2003 (n=891), followed by 2007 (n=879), while the fewe…
