Dendritic cell tumor in a salivary gland lymph node: a rare differential diagnosis of salivary gland neoplasms.

Dendritic cell tumors are extremely rare neoplasms arising from antigen-presenting cells of the immune system. We report a case of a 69-year-old man with an unremarkable medical history who presented with a 2-months history of a gradually enlarging painless, firm, mobile, 2 × 2-cm swelling at the caudal pole of the left parotid gland without systemic symptoms. Histologically, the tumor consisted of a spindle cell proliferation in an intraparotideal lymph node. Based on the histopathologic, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings, a dendritic cell tumor, not otherwise specified (N

Two patients with Hailey-Hailey disease, multiple primary melanomas, and other cancers.

BACKGROUND: Hailey-Hailey Disease (HHD) is an autosomal dominant skin disorder that is characterized by erythematous and sometimes vesicular, weeping plaques of intertriginous regions. Squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma arising in lesions of HHD have been described in the literature. To our knowledge, there are no reports of melanoma or noncutaneous malignant neoplasms associated with HHD. OBSERVATIONS: We discuss the mechanisms of oncogenicity, including genetic, environmental, and iatrogenic factors, in 2 patients with HHD, multiple primary melanomas, and other cancers. Patien

Feasibility of a novel classification for parotid gland cytology: A retrospective review of 512 cytology reports taken from 4 United Kingdom general hospitals.

BACKGROUND: A novel classification for parotid cytology has been previously proposed. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and clinical relevance of this classification. METHOD: Between 2010 and 2013, cytology reports from 4 United Kingdom general hospitals were retrospectively classified and compared to histological and clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Based on the cytology reports of 512 patients, we revised our previous "P" system to a "Sal" (salivary) classification to encompass all cytologic outcomes. The percentage of patients with a final diagnosis of malignancy accordin

Gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery for salivary gland neoplasms with base of skull invasion following neutron radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to examine the outcome of patients treated with a planned gamma knife boost after completion of neutron radiotherapy for salivary gland neoplasms involving the base of skull. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with salivary gland neoplasms involving the base of skull were treated from 2001 to 2005 at our institution. These results were compared with a similar historical group treated at our institution from 1984 to 2000. The patients had the following characteristics: median age: 54 years (range, 23-80); median follow-up period: 20.5 months (range, 4-55); women-to-men patie

A nationwide study on incidence and mortality of major salivary gland malignancies 2007-2020.

PURPOSE: Malignant major salivary gland tumors (MMSGTs) are rare neoplasms with increasing incidence. This study aimed to assess Serbia's epidemiological trends of MMSGTs over a 14-year period and compare them with global epidemiological patterns. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive epidemiological study was performed using national data from the Institute for Public Health spanning 2007 to 2020. MMSGT cases were identified using ICD-10 codes C07 and C08 (malignant neoplasms of the parotid gland and malignant neoplasm of other and unspecified major salivary gland including sublingual and sub

Distribution and survival outcomes of primary head and neck hematolymphoid neoplasms in older people: a population-based study.

Primary head and neck hematolymphoid neoplasms (PHNHLN) are defined as a series of hematolymphoid system-derived neoplasms which primarily emanate in head and neck region. Due to the rarity and absence of symptomatic specificity, PHNHLN is easily neglected. The objective of this study is to investigate demographics, pathological subtype distribution, anatomical location, survival outcomes and prognostic factors of PHNHLN among older patients aged ≥ 60. The individual patient information in our study was derived from Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database. Descriptive epidemiologic

Diagnostic performance of Milan system for reporting salivary gland cytopathology: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is a well-established modality for diagnosing salivary gland pathologies. The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) provides a standardized uniform framework leading to an evidence-based risk of malignancy (ROM). Based on the current literature, ROM in the 6-tier MSRSGC ranges from <5% for neoplasm-benign to >90% for the malignant category. Here, we report our institutional experience adopting MSRSGC. METHODS: The cytopathology group at our institution implemented MSRSGC at the end of 2018. Through a query of our laboratory i

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland with symptomatic ovarian metastases.

We report the clinical and pathologic features of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland that metastasized to the ovaries 10 years after initial presentation. A 30-year-old woman underwent excision of a right submandibular adenoid cystic carcinoma followed by regional external beam radiation therapy. Three years later, she underwent extended hepatic resection and localized radiotherapy to the hepatic region for metastatic disease. The patient was without evidence of disease for 7 years when she developed pelvic pain and a pelvic mass was found. A solid and cystic 10-cm left ova

Orofacial synovial sarcoma: a clinicopathologic study of 11 new cases and review of the literature.

Synovial sarcoma arises most commonly in the lower extremity, particularly in the region of the lower thigh and knee. Yet the occurrence of thus mesenchymal neoplasm in the head and neck area has been convincingly documented, albeit confined almost exclusively to cervical and parapharyngeal sites. Therefore, in view of its rarity in the head and neck, we analyzed a group of 11 synovial sarcomas arising in the orofacial region. The series comprised nine men (82%) and two women (18%). In common with synovial sarcoma at more conventional sites, this is a disease of young adults: ages ranged from

Malignant tumours of the parotid gland: management of the neck (including the clinically negative neck) and a literature review.

Major salivary gland malignancies are rare, constituting 1%-3% of head-neck tumours. The surgical management of the clinically negative neck (cN0) does not have a univocal consensus yet. We have carried out a retrospective study on 119 cases of malignant parotid tumours that were surgically treated between January 1999 and January 2014. Our aim was to analyse preoperative findings (cytotype, cTNM) and to correlate these with postoperative results (grading, histotype, occult neck metastasis) in patients with parotid tumours to obtain an appropriate indication for neck management. In cN0 patient

Basal cell carcinoma metastatic to the parotid: report of a new case and review of the literature.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common of the cutaneous malignancies, accounting for 65 to 75% of all skin cancers. The natural history of this disease is one of chronic local invasion. Metastatic basal cell carcinoma is a rare clinical entity, with a reported incidence of only 0.0028 to 0.5%. Approximately 85% of all metastatic basal cell carcinomas arise in the head and neck region. We present a case of basal cell carcinoma that spread to the parotid gland in a man who had multiple lesions on his scalp and face. We also review the literature on metastatic basal cell carcinoma of the head an

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: A common tumour with a very unusual presentation.

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma is recognized as a subtype of pleomorphic adenoma in WHO classification 5th edition of salivary glands. The controversy pertaining to the entity is the benign features of the disease even at a metastatic site. We present a rare case of left recurrent pre-auricular swelling in a young male reported as metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma. A nineteen-year-old male presented with left preauricular swelling seven years ago which was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma and underwent complete excision of tumour. The tumour recurred twice - two and five years after the sur

Spontaneous Bilateral Facial Paralysis Secondary to Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Sudden onset, bilateral facial paralysis is a rare clinical entity, representing less than 2% of all diagnoses of facial nerve paralysis. The differential for these patients is necessarily broad and includes numerous etiologies. Metastatic breast carcinoma to the bilateral parotid glands is also exceedingly rare with only 2 reported case reports noted in the literature, neither of which demonstrated facial nerve paralysis. Here, we report the only known occurrence of a patient presenting with synchronous bilateral facial nerve paralysis secondary to metastatic breast carcinoma to the bilateral

Extracapsular dissection versus partial superficial parotidectomy for the treatment of benign parotid tumours.

The purpose of this study was to compare the complications of patients treated for a benign parotid tumour (BPT) by extracapsular dissection (ECD) vs. partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP). A comprehensive literature investigation was conducted by searching electronic databases. A systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies were performed to assess ECD and PSP for the treatment of BPTs with fixed-effects models. The outcomes analysed were transient or permanent facial nerve injury, Frey syndrome, recurrence rate, infection, and salivary fistula/sialocele. A total of 1641 patie
